“If you want to be in the gig, choose one: First, you get beaten up by me or you destroy the bass…” threatens Marutake High’s Oba, the mohawked antagonist who has been gunning for a fight with Kenji, Ota, and Asakura since the very beginning. With one swift unforeseeable action, this deadpan slice of animated mumblecore tears up its already useless rulebook, pours gasoline over it, then sets it on fire. But these flames aren’t what you’d come to expect from a typical fire: this is something altogether more vibrant, more primal; something so freeing it makes the avant-garde look as predictable as the next hit Avex single. Based on Hiroyuki Ohashi’s manga of the same name, “On-Gaku: Our Sound” taps into the unpredictability of Japan’s psych rock heritage, runs freakish with it, and has far too much fun doing so.

The frontrunners for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, “Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” so dominated the 48th annual Annie Awards on April 16 that all the other nominees left empty-handed. Friday marked the second of six days of final balloting for the 93rd Academy Awards.
“Soul” won Best Studio Animated Feature over one of its Oscar rival, “Onward,” as well as “The Croods: A New Age,” “The Willoughbys” and “Trolls: World Tour.” “Soul” also prevailed in six other races: character animation, editorial, music, special effects, storyboards and writing.
Likewise “Wolfwalkers” won Best Independent Feature over Oscar contender “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” plus “Calamity Jane,” “On-Gaku: Our Sound” and “Ride Your Wave.” “Wolfwalker” also walked away with the trophies for character design, direction, production design and voice.
Six of the last 10 Annie Awards champs have lined up with the Oscars: “Rango” (2012), “Frozen” (2014), “Inside Out” (2016), “Zootopia” (2017), “Coco” (2018) and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse...

Our frontrunners for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, “Soul” and “Wolfwalkers,” lead the roster in contention at the 48th annual Annie Awards on April 16 with 10 nominations each. “Onward” comes into the night with a lucky seven nominations while “The Willoughbys” and “The Croods: A New Age” are right behind at six apiece.
All of these films except “Wolfwalkers” contend for Best Studio Animated Feature; that race is rounded out by four-time nominee “Trolls: World Tour.” “Wolfwalkers” is up for Best Independent Feature alongside “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” “Calamity Jane,” “On-Gaku: Our Sound” and “Ride Your Wave.”

With his debut feature On-Gaku: Our Sound, Kenji Iwaisawa looked to “pursue a new expression” in animation, through the juxtaposition of offbeat characters and deadpan atmosphere not often found in the medium.
Based on a manga created by Hiroyuki Ôhashi, On-Gaku follows three delinquent teenagers as they set out to form a band. Culminating in an emotional scene involving live performance, the rest of the film was fashioned to be as muted and simple as possible, for reasons related to both story and budget.
Featuring original songs by musicians Tomohiko Banse, Grandfunk and Wataru Sawabe, the comedy picked up the Annecy International Animated Film Festival’s award for Best Original Music, following its debut in Ottowa in September of 2019.
In conversation with Deadline, Iwaisawa details the musical and visual influences behind his indie passion project, the rotoscoping involved in creating it, and a scene he’s particularly proud of, that...

Photo: 'On-Gaku: Our Sound'/Gkids Films 'On-Gaku: Our Sound' - An Unforgettable Anime Experience If you’re like me, you’ll always remember your first time watching On-Gaku: Our Sound. For me, it was at Atlanta’s unparalleled Midtown Art Cinema. I thank my lucky stars that I am still able to visit movie theaters on a semi-regular basis in 2020, and I am also incredibly thankful that Midtown Art Cinema has been able to remain afloat despite this year’s apocalyptic impact on the theater industry. There’s something completely irreplaceable about a local low-key indie movie theater. The usher working the cash register gave me the details about exactly how many minutes I had before the film would start and explained that an animated short would play before the feature. He also suggested that I order a sake to “facilitate my anime experience”, and I spontaneously complied.

“On-Gaku: Our Sound,” an oddball music comedy directed by Kenji Iwaisawa, upends all that is typical of Japanese animation. glutted with mind-bending sci-fi conundrums or elaborate time-slip-body-switching fantasies. But what fuels its easy breakout to western audiences are its bona fide rock references and characters as deadpan as any Aki Kaurismaki cast.
Signs of “On-Gaku” being the year’s biggest dark horse in anime fandom came in September 2019, when it beat “I Lost My Body” and “Children of the Sea” to win the Grand Prix at the Ottawa Animation Festival. It has since been picked up stateside by Gkids and should enjoy wide fest play following its presentation in the Contrechamps Competition section at the Annecy Animation Festival, which just awarded the film a prize for its music.

Japanese animated feature “Our Sound” (aka “On-Gaku”) is finding favor with buyers at the European Film Market.
Directed by Kenji Iwaisawa, and adapted from a manga by Hiroyuki Ohashi, it is the tale of a high school kid who tries to start a band in order to impress a girl. When he teams up with his pals, they discover that none of them can play an instrument. Discouragement lurks around every corner.
With international rights handled by Nikkatsu, the film has been licensed to China’s streaming giant Bilibili; and to conventional distributors Anime Limited, for the U.K. and Ireland; Eurozoom for French-speaking territories; and to Media Castle for Korea. A North American deal is pending.
The film premiered last year at the Ottawa Int’l Animation Festival, where it won the top prize and earned plaudits. It added to its haul at the London Animation Festival and moved...
