Take your pick. There have been countless film and TV productions adapting Alexandre Dumas’ classic 19th century tale of revenge and deception, The Count of Monte Cristo. We have seen it in different versions in 1934, 1954, 1975, 2002 and probably up to 15 more iterations. Now we have the latest, the lavish widescreen French production Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, which had its world premiere Wednesday night Out of Competition to a wildly approving full audience at the Grand Lumiere — an appropriate place to launch this film as the screen might be the best in the world, and this movie is big.
In addition to all those past film versions on the book, there are countless other movies that have stolen from this complexly plotted tale. For some reason I kept thinking of the Ocean’s movies as, like this, they involve lots of complicated plotting, and once our title character begins planning his revenge...

Five Inspirations is a series in which we ask directors to share five things that shaped and informed their film. Rodrigo Moreno's The Delinquents (2023) is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries.Inspiration #1Il PostoIl Posto. Many years after Vittorio De Sica and Roberto Rossellini's revolution of Neorealism in Italy, others took the relevant elements of that manifesto—using natural actors, filming real spaces, and incorporating social and political concerns—to find a cinematic poetry based on an accurate mise-en-scène. Here is Ermanno Olmi, one of the greatest Italian directors: sensitive, original, personal, and above all, subtle. I copied this frame and pasted it into The Delinquents. Inspiration #2The constant detourMaine-Océan.In every one of Jacques Rozier’s films (here are two frames from the great Maine-Océan [1986]) it is impossible to guess what’s next. Apart from an always improvised and lively mise-en-scène that takes everything close to the abyss,...

Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.
Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.
Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.
Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

The movie was the fourth installment and a spin-off from Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s series. The ensemble cast also included Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina alongside Hathaway and Bullock.
The power-packed female-led movie received a positive response from the audience upon its release. The Ocean’s trilogy of movies is confirmed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, with a release pencilled in for the end of April: more here.
Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy of Ocean’s films – Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, Ocean’s 13 – brought together a starry ensemble cast for a trio of crime caper movies. Really successful ones at that, even if the sort-of twist in Ocean’s 12 continues to have a degree of Wtf did they really do that about it.
Ocean’s 11 in particular though is a an absolute treat, and there’s much to enjoy across the three films, which as coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK for the first time.

Steven Soderbergh said he turned down the opportunity to return to the “Ocean’s” franchise, more than a decade and a half after directing”Ocean’s Thirteen.”
The director, who also helmed films “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Ocean’s Twelve” and produced spinoff “Ocean’s Eight,” told Variety that he is not planning to return to the heist series, regardless of the planned prequel and George Clooney’s sequel idea. The prequel film will star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and will take place in 1960s Europe; Clooney’s follow-up is described as a “Going In Style”-esque conclusion set after the events of 2007’s “Ocean’s Thirteen.”
However, Soderbergh is sitting out involvement in both.
“After we made the third movie, I felt like the series was very much concluded for me,” Soderbergh said of the Warner Bros.-distributed films. “When the studio approached me to see if I’d be involved in continuing the franchise,...

RoboCop Vs Predator is a fan-made side-scrolling shooter with Game Boy-style graphics and some surprising cameos. And it’s free!
In the 1980s, the UK’s Ocean Software quickly became the king of licenced movie tie-in videogames. Usually taking the form of side-scrolling platformers with the odd mini-game thrown in, games based on everything from 1989’s Batman to Sly Stallone’s Cobra and even Oliver Stone’s Platoon got the tie-in treatment. In fact, Ocean’s RoboCop game was the biggest-selling title ever made for the Sinclair Zx Spectrum.
If you have wistful memories of those Ocean days, the fan-made RoboCop Vs Predator is like a teleportation tunnel back to the 80s and early 90s. Not only is it based on two none-more-80s movie properties but it’s also designed to look as though it was developed for the Nintendo Game Boy, from its monochrome sprites to its warbling soundtrack.

Money Heist is a cultural phenomenon of this decade. This Spanish Netflix Original show happens to be one of the most watched and discussed. Money Heist was based on a robbery, but it may have glorified this act of crime and managed to captivate the audience for the longest time. The highlight of the show must be the identity of the characters, as they were named after cities around the world. To a whole lot of people, Berlin stood out, which is what brings us to the spin-off show on Netflix. Berlin is a Spanish Netflix original show that chronicles the life of the lead character of the same name and was released on December 29, 2023. There is a lot to say about this new eight-episodic miniseries directed by Esther Martínez Lobato and Lex Pina.

Julia Roberts has a confession – another confession. More than 25 years after its release, Roberts has said that My Best Friend’s Wedding is the one movie of hers that she wouldn’t mind revisiting. She even has a vague idea of what audiences could see.
Speaking with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Julia Roberts said the movie of hers that she would most likely deserve a follow-up was more than likely My Best Friend’s Wedding “because there’s so many people in it, and to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going and…” In the movie, Julia Roberts’ Julianne hatches a plan to spoil the wedding of Michael (Dermont Mulroney) and Kimmy (the once-retired Cameron Diaz). Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn will stream on Prime Video from 22 December, just in time for Christmas.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell’s sophomore film is coming to Prime Video on 22 December, in case you need something to watch with your family during the holidays.
The film stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike star in this deliciously trashy thriller that follows Keoghan’s Oliver Quick as he adjusts to life at Oxford University. He sets his eyes on Elordi’s Felix, who invites him to stay at his family’s lavish mansion, the titular Saltburn.
Saltburn opened the BFI London Film Festival in October and has proved to be a rather polarising film. The film’s class politics especially have been the subject of fierce online arguments. Many have felt that the film victimises the upper classes and it seems that Pike, who plays Felix’s mother Elspeth, agrees, at least to some extent.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are set for the next Ocean’s film, and a couple more details have come to light.
Following the box office success of Ocean’s 8 in 2018, Warner Bros was soon mulling over what it could do next with the franchise. Since Steven Soderbergh remade the Rat Pack-headlined original Ocean’s 11 in 2001 (pictured), the films have been of mixed quality, but the box office returns reliable. A further chapter is thus not a surprise, although the decision not to retain the Ocean’s 8 cast is more of an eyebrow-raiser.
Instead, the next Ocean’s film is going back in time.
Our old friend Brendon Connelly has been in touch, with a bunch of new details about the film. Jay Roach, we knew, is set to direct, but we now learn that the current working title for it is simply Oceans, with no number in there at all.

Religiosity isn’t a particularly good look lately, at least as it’s being performed by politicians. Artists, though — especially one the caliber of Jamaica’s Samory-Tour Frazer, a.k.a. Samory I — can still conjure the unifying power, beauty and healing that religion sometimes brings. Samory made this clear on Black Gold, his promising 2017 debut, with its Rastafarian calling card “Rasta Nuh Gangsta,” a policy brief to a local cop book-ended by Nyabinghi drumming and a potent dub breakdown. And his new album Strength is, even more so, a...

According to public records, Shear has acquired a 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom house sited on a waterway not far from Miami Beach’s main strip of hotels and restaurants. The transaction closed on Oct. 5 in an off-market deal.
Its new owner — known as Manager Myles on Instagram — was born and raised in Miami, according to Ocean Drive Magazine, and is the co-founder, along with Kygo, of Palm Tree Crew, which includes a live events business and investment platform. After their amazing chemistry in Greta Gerwig’s $1 billion ‘Barbie’, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are gearing up to reunite on screen for an ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ prequel movie. While it may indeed be hard to imagine Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as anything but Barbie and Ken right now, each escaping from Barbieland, the two will don completely new avatars after their feel-good fantasy comedy.
According to Collider, director Jay Roach has a very vivid vision for his currently untitled ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ prequel. He is in fact inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological thriller films, and will go old school with its filmmaking techniques as it will be set in Monte Carlo in 1962.
Next to nothing has been revealed about the film, though Jay Roach has said that he aims to capture the same on-screen presence of Margot and Ryan which they showcased in ‘Barbie’, except this time it will be darker,...

When Matt Damon was first recruited for the Ocean’s film series, it was right after he’d established himself as one of Hollywood’s hottest young actors, following critically acclaimed roles in movies like Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Of course, at that point, Damon could have easily gone the leading man route; instead, he chose to become part of a massive ensemble cast that saw him starring alongside established names like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Brad Pitt. Speaking at the time of Ocean’s Eleven’s release, Damon told us why making the movie was the right decision for him. "The Dragon Prince" has quickly grown into a clear spiritual successor to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," an animated show with a vast and complex world and mythology, as well as an epic scope that helped it become one of the best fantasy stories on TV, including live-action.
After the first three seasons told a complete chapter in the saga, ending with the start of a new era in the fantasy world of the show, season 4 jumped forward in time and kickstarted a new chapter. Dubbed the Mystery of Aaravos arc, most of that season was spent on table setting for the new status quo, the changed dynamics between elves and humans, and building up the show's primordial villain — the Archmage and Startouch Elf Aaravos.

With “Full Circle,” Steven Soderbergh once again immerses us in a multi-character crime caper. Typical of the director’s work, it’s intricate, obsessed with money, cognizant of sociopolitical realities and astute about human nature (if not super illuminating). This six-episode Max limited series is on the more serious end of the Soderbergh spectrum, “Traffic”-like rather than an “Ocean’s” romp, mousetrap-plotted as opposed to experimental. The overall effect is one of the smart, showy filmmaker doing donuts, but spinning the wheels of a well-tuned Escalade.
Written by Ed Solomon, who also provided the scripts for Soderbergh’s earlier mystery projects “Mosaic” and “No Sudden Move,” “Circle” transfers the basic idea of Akira Kurosawa’s procedural “High and Low” to a contemporary New York City with a much denser population of key characters. A scheme to kidnap the son of a wealthy family gets royally and morally screwed up...

Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Laura McGann’s documentary The Deepest Breath explores the life and passions of champion free-diver Alessia Zecchini. Accompanied by her safety diver, Stephen Keenan, they’ve dedicated their life to the extreme sport, which requires physical strength, mental determination, and an unwavering trust in the people who teach and support you along the way. Ahead of a July 19 release from Netflix, the first trailer has now arrived.

The heist movie is a timeless popular classic. It always seems like the perfect, victimless crime. When we watch this type of movie, we are usually on the side of the gang of robbers and find ourselves rooting for them to get away with their audacious crime.
The films telling the story of Danny Ocean have been some of the most popular of the modern era. Ocean’s Eleven was released in the US on December 7th, 2001. It became the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year, with global box office receipts of $450.7 million. With an all-star cast including George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt, it was a remake of a movie from 1960 by the same name.

Heist layered with comedy as a genre has been a success in recent times; we have the Ocean movie series and Baby Driver which are some examples that have gotten a lot of acclaim. Barracuda Queens is a six-part show with a running time of 35-minute per episode. We get to see young girls carrying out robberies and getting away with it. But will they ever get caught?
Spoilers Ahead
The Bill They Must Settle

Director Jacques Rozier, who was regarded as the last surviving member of the French New Wave, has died. He was 96.
French media reported that a close acquaintance of the filmmaker had confirmed his death on June 2 in his native city of Paris, after a short spell in hospital.
Rozier never achieved the renown of Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Claude Chabrol or Eric Rohmer, but his work had its place in the French New Wave and pushed boundaries in ways that laid a path for filmmakers today.
After studying at the early French cinema school Idhec, Rozier cut his directing teeth as a TV assistant, while making his own shorts including Rentrée des Classes (1956) and Blue Jeans (1958).
The latter work played at a short film festival in the city of Tours, where it caught the attention of then-film critic Godard, who highlighted it as one of the...

It’s a foolhardy plan to craft a film almost entirely around the onscreen chemistry between two movie stars and hope for the best. (Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Movies: "No Sudden Move" and "Kimi"
Where You Can Stream Them: HBO Max
The Pitch: In "No Sudden Move," director Steven Soderbergh returns to the heist genre with an all-star cast and a home invasion gone wrong in '50s Detroit. In "Kimi," Soderbergh marries technology fears with a familiar scenario centered on a homebound "voice stream interpreter" (Zoë Kravitz) who overhears something she shouldn't have.
Why They're Essential Viewing: After retiring and un-retiring, there were a few years there where Soderbergh was focused more on TV projects like his Cinemax series "The Knick." It's been a while since we saw a movie of his enjoy a theatrical run -- thanks in part, perhaps, to the pandemic he predicted with his 2011 thriller "Contagion.

Ryan Gosling is in talks to star opposite Margot Robbie in the new Ocean’s Eleven film, which four-time Emmy winner Jay Roach (Bombshell) will direct for Warner Bros., Deadline can confirm. The project follows Gosling and Robbie’s recent work together on Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film for the studio, which has the former playing Ken.
While we hear that the Ocean’s reboot penned by Carrie Solomon will be set in Europe in the 1960s, further details as to its plot have kept under wraps. The project has not yet been greenlighted—remaining in “active development,” as first reported in May—though we hear Warner Bros. is looking at launching production next spring.
Robbie and Tom Ackerly will produce for LuckyChap, alongside Roach and Michelle Graham for Everyman Pictures. Gary Ross, Olivia Milch and LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara will exec produce alongside Village Roadshow, which may also co-finance the pic.

Greta Gerwig’s movie version of Barbie has been getting a lot of hype, in part simply due to the fact that it’s a Barbie movie, as that’s something a lot of us never thought would actually get made. People are curious as to what the nature of the film is, with such interesting talent behind the project, including none other than Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as Ken and Barbie. Additionally, memes have already been created from the paparazzi pics of a filming of a scene on location on Venice beach. And now, it looks like Warner Bros, the studio behind Barbie, is keen to capitalize on the hype. Comicbook.com has reported (and this is all still unconfirmed) that the two are set to work together again for a new entry in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise.
This new planned entry will be a prequel to the 2001 all-star George Clooney remake.
