Best SciFi Channel movie ever!, 9 August 2009
9/10
Author: gobozoom from United States

I caught this movie late at night on the SyFy channel. I expected it to be a terrible CGI-fest (like most of the movies they show that I haven't heard of before), but I was pleasantly surprised. It's actually very well written; kind of a second-string Shaun of the Dead (so, in other words, better than most movies I've paid to see in theaters lately).

The plot is fairly unpredictable for this genre, meaning that it goes basically where everyone watching it wants it to go in the end, but it gets there in a way you won't entirely see coming (I call BS on reviews that claim otherwise). But the real reasons to watch this movie are the genuinely witty writing and the subtle comic performances of the cast. The worst you could say about this movie is that it's derivative of Shaun of the Dead. Personally, I'm totally okay with that.

When Giant Insects Attack!, 11 July 2009
9/10
Author: PKazee from New York

This "giant bugs attack" comedy is a blast of fun. In the middle of getting fired from a job he took in a reluctant effort to please his dear ol' dad (a wonderfully gung-ho, Ray Wise), an unmotivated goof-off is knocked unconscious by a painfully loud and high-pitched banshee-like siren. When he awakes, he finds himself and - seemingly everyone else in the world - sealed up inside cocoons. Breaking free, he wakes up several of his office mates and somehow ends up leading them in a dangerous crosstown trek toward safer environs, battling - and outwitting - giant murderous bugs - and worse - all the way. Direction and performances are all excellent, as are the bugs and various other odd creatures.

Better than expected, even with high expectations, 11 July 2009
9/10
Author: VVarlock from Canada

No reviews yet for this little gem, so I'll go ahead.

I went in expecting a low budget campy horror B-movie and wow, I certainly did not expect a movie that good in overall.

Most of the actors are quite good, even the extras, and the main character and his entourage are surprisingly well developed for this kind of movie.

I wouldn't call the movie fast=paced, but the action in well maintained throughout and starts after less than 10 minutes, so no long buildup, the bugs are there at the beginning, you get to know more about them as the movie goes so there are no long boring explanations.

The CGI is very well done and keeps you in the movie and there are plenty of bugs of a few kinds.

But what really did the movie for me was the dark humor, think Shaun of the Dead, but with insects. Even if the movie has a serious tone, you always get some well done jokes here and there, mostly by the likable anti-hero that just seems to try so hard.

A must see for the horror/comedy fans and for the critters fans in general.

Cult quality, 13 August 2009
10/10
Author: Jon Death from United States

I caught this on an upload someone posted from ripping it off the Syfy channel. If you like sci fi movies with a good blend of story, charming characters, comedy and special effects all complimented with an attitude that doesn't take itself too seriously or market itself as something it's not, you should really enjoy this one. The concept is silly but the cast and director really make it work.

Some of the scenes impressed me with how much effort was made into the shoot locations and the architecture chosen. Chris Marquette does a great job of keeping each scene funny as does Ray Wise once his character is introduced. The special effects are pretty good, the concepts are good and the character interaction is screwy yet entertaining.

It has the cult film feel with a high re-watch value. They give us an offbeat ending leaving hope for a sequel which would be cool since the film is satisfying yet lacking and you're left wanting more. If you grimace at mainstream films and tend to seek those kept off the map, this movie is worth your time and attention. You'll probably love it and watch it a dozen times or of course, the opposite.

Fantastic zombie bug satire!, 13 July 2009
10/10
Author: brewsterlewster-1 from United States

I just saw it at the Maine International Film Festival with director and one actor present (one is from Maine). What a fantastic flick! Really excellent direction, acting and special effects. Although meant to take place in New England, it was actually filmed in Bulgaria (budget reasons). The humor is fast and punchy. A true low budget instant classic which I am predicting will be a cult favorite. Looking forward to more from Kyle Rankin! In the vein of Starship Troopers and Bruce Campbell. The ending is great even though the director had an alternate version (no spoilers here, but maybe it will be in the DVD coming out later in the year). It will be shown in September on SyFy.

Eight legged Freaks 2, 13 October 2009
7/10
Author: kosmasp

I'm not sure, if the "monsters" here, have eight legs, I just know that the overall feeling is, that this could be a relative of the movie "Eight Legged Freaks". A fun horror movie then, with some nice characters. While they are all making the best of their roles, Ray Wise obviously helps the movie a lot! Without him, the movie would have lost much of it's touch!

Of course, if you don't like your horror mixed with comedy, you will be certainly annoyed. Throw in a bit of romance and some people might want to switch off, after a few minutes. They would miss Ray Wise of course, but again, if you don't like this mixture, it would be better, if you didn't watch this. Would be a waste of your time. Everyone else, who wants to have, a fun and light viewing pleasure, go ahead and rent it :o)

fun movie....i hope there's a sequel, 21 September 2009
7/10
Author: bill django from United Kingdom

i wasn't to sure whether to watch this movie, the only decent movie like this that springs to mind is starship troopers, and yet i could name a million crap movies like this....but the IMDb rating told me to give it a shot....and im so glad i did!! its got a great storyline that doesn't need too much explanation, giving you the chance to concentrate on the characters! the movie keeps u glued and there's not a dull moment in it! its got a lotta comedy factor to it which is mostly brought to you by the main character! the effects are decent enough to look "realistic" and there's no stupid cgi that looks like a cardboard cutout floating across the scene!! i wont say too much but the ending makes you hope there's gonna be a sequel....i hope there is..and i hope its just as good as this!!!...7 outta 10 from me!!

A diamond in the rough, 25 October 2009

I'm personally tired of and generally ignore the CG monster horror flicks that premiere on the SyFy Channel. I read that this was one of them. Well this one was done great! The jerk hero was actually likable in his purposely annoying way, very funny, and the story happens quickly, so you are in the bug infestation, what the heck is going on, just after the main guys humorful intro.

The other survivors are decent, the story paces along well, no argument lasts too long and no character however annoying, steals the show. There's that used dad-son expectation loss thing but it works well and lots of good natured character humor. The CG was done rather well, even though I still felt it was composited, it was at least fast paced.

Bugapalooza, 20 September 2009

Infestation is a great little science fiction horror movie. Unlike some movies that tease you and don't give you a glimpse of the monster until the end, this one dives right in so that giant killer insects are running and flying around in broad daylight nearly from moment one, and that makes this one heck of a weird flick. There is a perfect combination of humor and horror, so that this often funny movie doesn't become annoyingly, forcefully camp like some movies such as Dead Alive. It was great to see that guy who plays the devil in the TV show Reaper; he's a good actor. The special effects are great as well. It's as if a bunch of Bulgarians took that scene from John Carpenter's The Thing, you know, the one in which the head sprouts insect legs and crawls away, and based an entire movie on it. This isn't as gory as other bug spectaculars such as Starship Troopers, and even in the gory moments its like watching marshmallow fluff being sprayed all over the place, so it's tame enough for younger people to see without therm being completely disturbed. The main character looks like a pubescent John Cusack and even though it takes a bit of time to relate to him, his character grows on you and you end up liking him. This is straight up in your face bugapalooza. You should watch it on your big screen TV or on your DVD projector. Either way, it's a ton of mindless fun.

The kitchen sink...plus bugs!!!, 13 July 2009
10/10

The way I see it, the only real risk against this flick is just how easily it can be taken for granted. It's so action packed that you might forget how funny it is. It's so funny that you might forget that's even got a little bit of heart. I heard about this flick 'cuz I guess it was made by one of the project greenlight guys from way back. Anyways, I saw it in the theater the other night and was blown away. I found out it's airing on the sci-fi channel this August, which is cool but you're probably not going to get the same experience as seeing it in the theater. You're best bet is to get it on DVD because the sci-fi channel is definitely going to have to edit some stuff out. It's got Ray Wise (Of Twin Peaks fame) in it who has all the charm and comedic timing as one of those classy silent movie stars. You can't help but smile when he's on the screen. It's also got that kid from Joan of Arcadia, not John Ritter's son but the chick's boyfriend.

A lot of the humor from this movie comes from it's effortless ability to reference it's own script and "call back". It does this with great ease and so when you're watching it, you feel like your in on a million "inside jokes". Some of the action is pretty funny too, though it's not quite "splatstick". You won't feel guilty for laughing when this one dude bounces out of the mouth of a giant flying mosquito. Even Wiley Coyote took a few hits for the all-American chuckle. There's a father son relationship that really develops and becomes warm without being too sentimental. And a love interest that seems real and down to earth. That's what kind of surprised me about this movie, just how unprentenious it was. I'm not saying I was expecting an art house flick with Giant Bugs but all the character development and dynamics were really ambitious.

Overall, I'm giving it ten out of ten stars simply because it's a fun flick and I think people should watch it.
