  • The filming was so secluded, intense, and laborious that the last 20 minutes were shot with only the director and three cast members present. When off-screen the cast operated the boom mic and assisted with the camera work.

  • The barn that acted as the sound-stage was not air conditioned or heated and had only one door. On the first day of shooting it was over 100 degrees, on the last it was below 0.

  • The motel room set stayed erected for one year while the director cut the film for the purposes of re-shoots.

  • There is a single cut in the film from a wide-shot to a close-up of two characters that was filmed a year apart.

  • Sympathy was filmed entirely in one room. The set, structurally modeled after Room 1 in the Bates Motel, was constructed inside a barn in the middle of a corn field in Indiana.

  • While cutting the film, director/editor Andrew Moorman worked as a camera operator at Universal Studios Theme Park in Hollywood. He would often sneak down to the lower lot and eat his lunch in the famed Bates Motel set for inspiration.

  • Another example of how digital filmmaking has changed the way movies are made: the visual effects artist for the film volunteered his efforts via a posting on the internet and received all the digital clips from an FTP site. He applied the effects in a matter of days and would then return them, where they were re-inserted in the final edit, and burned to DVD. This person has never met the cast and crew and only spoke with the director once over the phone.
