Kcrw’s acclaimed music documentary podcast, Lost Notes, returns for its fourth season on March 13, 2024. Co-hosts Novena Carmel (Kcrw) and Michael Barnes (Kcrw / Kpfk / Artform Radio) guide you through eight wildly different and deeply human stories, each set against the kaleidoscopic backdrop of LA’s soul and R&b scene of the 1950s-1970s.
Stories include:
Gloria Jones was a gospel-trained teenage singer from LA whose greatest hit - 1965’s “Tainted Love” - was never quite hers. But she went on to lead a double life as a hit songwriter for some of the greatest artists of all time ... until a fortuitous rediscovery led to her coronation as the Queen of Northern Soul. Fela Kuti is known today as an iconic artist, innovator, and revolutionary ... but in 1969, he was broke, exhausted, and in hot water with the Feds after a disastrous American tour. Yet a chance meeting transformed his musical and political consciousness,...

Jay-Z wasn’t too impressed with Rihanna after one of her songs failed. A dance track changed everything for Rihanna. One of her songwriters decided to give her a Madonna-inspired musical makeover and it paid off big time. It also changed the trajectory of Rihanna’s life.
1 Rihanna song stopped Jay-Z from dropping her from his label
During a 2020 interview with Vulture, songwriter Evan Rogers recalled the state of Rihanna’s career following the failure of her single “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want.” “I remember we had a meeting with Jay-Z at his Four Seasons hotel suite out in Beverly Hills,” Rogers said. “He called us because Rihanna had been acting up a little bit. He brought her back down to earth and pointed out this could all be over in a minute. She teared up; it was some real tough love.

“Ooh, jukebox” – the words uttered by the Fourteenth Doctor when invited to nosey around the Fifteenth Doctor’s new Tardis in the closing moments of 60th anniversary special “The Giggle”.
Ooh, jukebox indeed. Specifically, the Doctor’s jukebox is a 1946-designed Wurlitzer 1015 nicknamed “The Bubbler” on account of the bubbles that move through its colourful tubes as it plays tunes. Even more specifically, we’ve seen the same make and model of jukebox twice before on Doctor Who, once on the set of Clara’s 1950s-Diner Tardis, and once five billion years into the future on Platform One, where the great and the good are gathered to watch the imminent destruction of planet Earth.
Whether or not it’s supposed to be the self-same jukebox from those previous appearances, or simply something shiny that caught the Doctor’s eye, the songs it plays are significant. Production designer Phil Sims explained...

Breathless (2009)
Director: Yang Ik-june
Directed by and featuring Yang Ik-june in a lead role, 2009’s Breathless is a great example of Korean cinema that’s very much a hidden gem. By the time Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me dropped Tuesday morning, much had already been said — by critics, by the tabloids and by Spears herself, often railing against the former — about the contents of the highly anticipated book. In an excerpt and People cover story, Spears spoke about effects of her decade-plus conservatorship and revealed that she had an abortion during her relationship with Justin Timberlake. When The New York Times managed to get a copy from a bookstore ahead of publication, key facts about the couple’s breakup were revealed: He did it via text message, and an ensuing interview with Diane Sawyer was one of several “breaking points” for Spears. The Daily Mail even dug up a previously unreleased audition tape for The Notebook — a role that famously went to Rachel McAdams. Throughout these prepublication reveals, Spears took to her Instagram (which she has often used...

‘Expendables 4’ narrowly took top place at the mainland China box office on a quiet weekend preceding the National Day holiday season at the end of the month. “A Haunting in Venice” opened outside the top five.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway shows “Expendables 4” earning $10.9 million (RMB78.6 million) over its debut weekend. The latest instalment in the “Expendables” franchise lacks an above-the title Chinese star, but includes Jason Statham, who is also to be seen in China-u.S. co-production “Meg 2: The Trench.”
The new release title was fractionally ahead of Chinese crime thriller “Dust to Dust,” which picked up $10.6 million (RMB76.2 million) in its second week of release. “Dust” breathed in a 52% week-on-week decline, but advanced its total to $44.2 million after ten days on release.
“Oppenheimer” played on in third place with $4.3 million in its third week in China. After 17 days on release, it has accumulated $54.3 million in the Middle Kingdom.

The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

Being a foremost member of the royal family isn’t only about living a life of luxury for Prince William. His long list of royal duties keep him plenty busy: Representing the crown, traveling to countries in the British commonwealth, promoting conservation and mental health, and bestowing knighthood and damehood. That last one lets the presumptive future king mingle with plenty of stars, including these musicians Prince William knighted before he became first in line for the throne.
Prince William knighted Ringo Starr in 2018
Beatles drummer Ringo Starr was one of the famous musicians Prince William knighted. The royal performed the ceremony in 2018, but England was a little late in honoring Starr’s artistic achievements.
The French government gave Ringo a rare honor when it named him Commander of France’s Order of Arts and Letters in a 2013 ceremony in Monaco. Still, being recognized for his lifetime accomplishments in his...

With Wednesday’s release of Netflix’s Firefly Lane, we got to know future BFFs Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey — played as adults by Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, respectively — just as they got to know one another. The former was portrayed as always having been gorgeous and outgoing, a star waiting to be born; the latter, bookish and reserved (as telegraphed by her ever-present glasses — TV shorthand for mousy). Yet they forged a relationship that lasted decades, at least until… dun dun Dun!
We’ll get to “dun dun Dun” in a bit — and give you a chance to...
