Universal Pictures, which has been having a disastrous year at the box office, got some good news from its home video unit on Wednesday. Its Fast & Furious titled roared to the top of the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert DVD and Blu-ray sales charts and topped Home Media magazine's rental chart for last week. Many people who bought the latest movie also picked up the original, too. It returned to the sales chart at No. 10. So did the 2006 release, The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift (at No.12) and 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious (at No. 14). »

Romanian Films Winning Awards, Few Viewers In Romania

4 June 2009 2:47 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Many Romanian films that have received top honors at film festivals internationally are not performing well at the box office in Romania itself, the website FilmNewEurope.com reported Wednesday. The biggest hit of the year in that country, the website observed, was the Hollywood feature Yes Man, which sold 90,524 tickets, followed by Fast and Furious 4 (overseas title) with 88,794. By contrast, the top-drawing Romanian film, Weekend With My Mother drew just 4,144 moviegoers and The Happiest Girl in the World, which won the special C.I.C.A.E. award at the Berlin Film Festival this year, has sold only 1,300 tickets. And the latest Romanian film to hit local theaters, Carol I, has sold just 642 tickets. »

Jealous Gibson Wants To Rejoin Fast & Furious Franchise

5 May 2009 12:20 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Tyrese Gibson is desperate to star in the next Fast & Furious movie, after the massive success of the latest installment.

Gibson starred in 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious, but he opted out of subsequent sequels.

The franchise returned in 2009 with its fourth film, Fast & Furious, which proved to be a surprise U.S. box office hit - taking a staggering $72.5 million (£50 million) in its opening weekend last month (03-05Apr09).

And Gibson is so impressed, he wants to jump back onboard.

He tells Starpulse.com, "Listen, love Fast and the Furious, love the numbers it did, love the cast. If my phone rings for five (the fifth installment) I'm right there. They were all beating the door down to try to get me in in four (Fast & Furious). Would've loved to have been a part of it. Didn't work out for whatever reason so my phone is wide open for five and I would love to do it." »

Box Office Remains On A Tear

27 April 2009 2:34 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Even with a film that was not even screened for critics coming in at No. 1, the box office's hot streak continued uninterrupted over the weekend -- as overall gross was projected to be about $112 million, 24 percent ahead of the comparable weekend a year ago, according to Media by Numbers. "We have never been in this strong a position heading into the summer season, ever," Media by Numbers President Paul Dergarabedian told the Associated Press. The summer season kicks off next weekend with 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which has received much positive buzz, possibly intensified by the online release of a pirated workprint late last month. Also opening is Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which has also been tracking well. The following weekend brings the return of Star Trek. Still, it seemed like summer last weekend as the Beyonce Knowles/Idris Elba thriller Obsessed, which reportedly cost $20 million to make, opened with a whopping $28.5 million in ticket sales, or about $11,300 per theater. But perhaps even more surprising was the strong debut for the nature documentary Earth. Playing on 1,804 screens, the Disney release took in $8.55 million -- the highest weekend gross ever for a nature documentary and the third highest for any sort of documentary. It has earned $14.2 million since its opening on Wednesday, Earth Day. Meanwhile, last weekend's champ, 17 Again and Universal's new Fighting were in a close race for second place, with early estimates giving the Zac Efron starrer a slight edge -- $11.66 million to $11.44 million for Fighting. Coming in fourth was the well-reviewed drama The Soloist, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, with $9.71 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Obsessed, $28.5 million; 2. 17 Again, $11.7 million; 3. Fighting, $11.4 million; 4. The Soloist, $9.7 million; 5. Earth, $8.6 million; 6. Monsters vs. Aliens, $8.5 million; 7. State of Play, $6.9 million; 8.Hannah Montana: The Movie, $6.4 million; 9. Zac Zaps Box Office

20 April 2009 2:43 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Zac Efron wasn't the box-office sensation that Miley Cyrus was a week ago, but his 17 Again did trounce all others over the weekend as it debuted to an estimated $24.1 million. (Cyrus's Hannah Montana: The Movie hauled in $32.3 million last week.) Universal's State of Play, starring Russell Crowe, opened in second place with about $14.1 million, about what had been expected for it. But Crank: High Voltage, which had not been screened for critics before it opened, displayed little voltage at all, as it grossed around $6.5 million. (Critics insisted the plot had little juice, either. Frank Lovece in Newsweek called it "a joyless slog." Jeannette Catsoulis in the New York Times described it as "boorish, bigoted and borderline pornographic." Liam Lacey in the Toronto Globe & Mail concluded: "The movie feels like a form of aversion therapy designed to take the fun out of dumb.") Nevertheless, the box office continued on its year-long hot streak, with revenue up an estimated 19 percent above the comparable weekend a year ago. "It's going to be a record year, because we've never had a start to a year this strong," Media by Numbers President Paul Dergarabedian told the Associated Press. "Unless the world goes off its axis and spins into the sun, I don't see how we're not going to have a $10 billion year."

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. 17 Again, $24.1 million; 2. State of Play, $14.1 million; 3. Monsters vs. Aliens, $12.9 million; 4. Hannah Montana: The Movie, $12.7 million; 5. Fast & Furious, $12.3 million; 6. Crank: High Voltage, $6.5 million; 7. Observe and Report, $4.1 million; 8. Knowing, $3.5 million; 9. Zac Efron's "17 Again" unseats Miley Cyrus' "Hannah Montana the Movie" as the weekend's box-office champ! "17 Again" made $24.1 million, making it the No. 1 film in North America! Meanwhile, "Hannah Montana" fell to No. 4 with $12.7 million.

Efron joins the likes of Kevin James ("Paul Blart: Mall Cop"), Liam Neeson ("Taken"), Tyler Perry ("Madea Goes to Jail"), and Cyrus in changing the rules in Hollywood on who should take the box-office crown.

Meanwhile, Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck must settle for No. 2. Their flick, "State of Play," took in $14.1 million. But apparently, Universal Pictures is happy with its modest outcome.

Another new release, Lionsgate's actioner, "Crank: High Voltage" failed to match "Fast & Furious'" stellar box-office power. The Jason Statham sequel only made $6.5 million debuting at No. 6.

Rodriguez: 'I Like Men Who Love Their Mums'

Fast & Furious star Michelle Rodriguez has dismissed ongoing reports she's a lesbian, insisting she likes men who love their mothers.

The feisty actress has been dogged by reports about her sexuality for years - and was once linked to recently wed movie star Kristanna Loken - but she has revealed she's on the hunt for a real man.

Rodriguez tells Latina magazine, "I can't stand boys. A boy looks at me like he wants to bang me, and I wanna throw up.

"I like men, 'cause they've been around the block and they respect their mamis (sic). It's hard to find one that's not machista (sic)."

And, if she does find a Mr. Right, she has no plans to wed to marry him.

She adds, "I don't believe in commitment. That's like giving somebody the responsibility of your happiness, like, 'Here, you make sure that all my orgasms are great, that I have somebody to hold on cold winter nights, and just assure me that if anybody messes with me, you'll beat them up.' Other than that, I don't see the point of marriage.

Is The Party Over For Hannah?

Although Hannah Montana: The Movie opened on Friday with $17.44 million, it earned just $4.46 million on Easter Sunday, a day when families are usually expected to turn up at theaters en masse. The disappointing Sunday turnout caused a significant revision of the weekend total. While Disney had estimated that Hannah would take in $34 million in its three-day debut, final figures released by Media by Numbers indicated that it had actually made $32.3 million. Most other films in the top ten also opened below their earlier estimates. Universal's Fast & Furious, which the studio figured would make $28.8 million, wound up with $27.2 million. And No. 3 Monsters vs. Aliens, which was supposed to bring in $22.6 million, ended up with $21.8 million. No matter. The top 12 films grossed $125.76 million over the weekend versus $80.83 million for the comparable week a year ago, an increase of 55.59 percent. For the year, total revenue is up 16.32 percent, while attendance is up 14.57 percent.

Hannah Is Faster Than Fast

13 April 2009 2:34 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

The batting average of the box-office seers dropped further over the weekend as Disney's Hannah Montana: The Movie bested the second week of Universal's Fast and Furious. Indeed, the Miley Cyrus film earned more on Friday alone than it was expected to earn over the entire Easter weekend. Disney estimated that it took in $34 million -- the studio's best Easter weekend ever. On the other hand, Fast and Furious dropped nearly 60 percent in its second weekend, winding up with about $28.8 million. Overseas, however, it made $46 million to pass the $200-million mark in worldwide ticket sales in just 10 days. The biggest disappointment was the performance of Warner Bros.' Observe and Report, which box-office prognosticators figured would duke it out with Hannah for second place. Instead it wound up in fourth place with just $11.1 million. Also debuting below expectations was Fox's Dragonball: Evolution, which placed eighth with $4.6 million. The film, which was not screened in advance for critics, got a pasting from them over the weekend, although Nathan Lee in the New York Times allowed that it "has been perfectly designed to blow the mind of a 10-year-old boy." Faring even worse with the critics was Royal Kill, which opened in limited release. Washington Post writer Dan Zak began his review by writing: Royal Kill needs to be seen to be believed, but don't see it, under any circumstances. Don't even read this review."
