Things got very nasty between Tom Sandoval and Scheana Shay on the latest episode of Vanderpump Rules.
During the Tuesday night (April 23) episode, the two co-stars got in explosive fight about Scheana‘s new song “Apples,” in which she references Sandoval‘s affair with Rachel “Raquel” Leviss.
Keep reading to find out more…After listening to the song, Sandoval confronted Scheana about why she thinks she’s involved in his affair with Rachel amid his relationship with Ariana Madix.
“What you two did to Ariana, it f–ked me up in more ways than one,” Scheana said. “The friendship, restraining order, and yeah did I decide to, if you want to call it, capitalize on it?”
“Scheana, I need you to understand something: you were not involved in this,” Sandoval insisted. “You did not get cheated on. She did not f–k Brock [Davies].”

This post contains minor spoilers for "Apples Never Fall."
Author Liane Moriarty writes twisty thrillers centered on complex female experiences within distinct socio-cultural settings, and her books have proven to be perfect for small-screen adaptations. Moriarty's "Nine Perfect Strangers," which was adapted by Hulu, explored themes of loss, alienation, and the search for meaning, while her "Big Little Lies" got the grand HBO adaptation treatment with two brilliant seasons (and the possibility of season 3 being still up in the air). Her latest work, "Apples Never Fall," has now been adapted into a brand new Peacock series of the same name developed by Melanie Marnich, who saw immense potential in translating Moriarty's challenging material for television.
Marnich experienced some issues during the adaptation process, as she considers Moriarty's book "an embarrassment of riches" where it was "really, really hard to figure out what served the momentum of the show and...

The Liane Moriarty cinematic universe has now come to Peacock, but how does one adapt the author behind “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” work for the screen?
“Apples Never Fall” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire that maintaining beloved novelist Moriarty’s “page-turner energy” was key for adapting the twisted family drama starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
“The pacing of those kinds of moments was to make the TV show have the same page-turner energy of the book,” Marnich said. “It was something I had to really be aware of. In the writer’s room, we worked really hard to craft the sort of constant turn of the story. It was so juicy. I’m a huge fan of Liane. I really, really worked to capture that same page turner energy in the show to keep things moving, but also never at the sacrifice of character development.”

Australian author Liane Moriarty is known for her layered characters, complex family dynamics, and intriguing mysteries. After the success of her book-to-screen adaptation of Big Little Lies on HBO in 2017, she's been in high demand.
In 2021, Hulu adapted another novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, which expanded on the characters' arcs from the book. It became a hit because of the humor in the series.
Peacock's Apples Never Fall combines the best of both, but it was most like the book and a fun, binge-worthy watch. I couldn't stop watching because I couldn't wait to see the next twist.
Apples Never Fall explores the complexities of marriage and family when you peel back the layers. This isn't a cookie-cutter happy family. The Delaneys are raw and honest, but they love each other deeply.

By all appearances, Joy (Annette Bening) and Stan Delaney (Sam Neill) have lived an idyllic life. Both were tennis champions in their youth and tennis coaches for decades later. Together, they founded the Delaney Tennis Academy in South Florida, where he helped at least one star pupil go on to win a Grand Slam. Now, they’ve sold the school and are entering retirement, hoping to spend as much time as possible with their four grown kids, Troy (Jake Lacy), Amy (Alison Brie), Logan (Conor Merrigan-Turner), and Brooke (Essie Randles). These are two people who spent their professional lives playing the sport they’ve always loved, and who still found romance, community, and connection at home. They have it all, and every bit of it is pretty darn good.
Or… is it? Like a classic family photo with one concerning detail, the Delaneys’ picturesque portrait fractures when put under sudden,...

In the latest season of Vanderpump Rules, viewers have watched as the cast has done their best to pick up the pieces in the months following Sandoval. And while it’s easy to assume that the drama has all but consumed their entire lives (the first four episodes would certainly leave you to believe that), each cast is also navigating their own individual lives and figuring out what their future looks like outside of another couple’s cheating scandal. For Scheana Shay, this has meant getting back into the studio and making new music.

It’s ironic that memory is the central theme of Piero Messina’s Berlin Competition title “Another End,” when so many of its twists and turns are so directly lifted from other films that it feels like you’ve seen them before; even watching it for the first time feels like rewatching. But if that makes this elegiac literalization of the timeless theme of “what is grief but love persevering?” a rather edgeless experience it’s not a wholly unpleasant one. Less designed to provoke than to soothe, perhaps the very familiarity of much of the movie is a virtue, letting us enjoy its sleek surfaces safe in the knowledge that there’s nothing much lurking in the depths to alarm us.
Indeed, the story’s central alarming incident has happened some time before the film even begins: a car crash for which Sal (Gael García Bernal) believes he was...

There were sunny skies over the Thessaloniki Film Festival this week, with unseasonably high temperatures leading many visitors to reach for the sunscreen while dashing between movie premieres and industry events at Greece’s longest-running film fest.
The local industry, too, is enjoying a moment in the sun, as the Mediterranean nation has seen production surge post-pandemic, buoyed by foreign titles like Rian Johnson’s Netflix blockbuster “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” action thriller “Tin Soldier,” starring Jamie Foxx and Robert De Niro, and the Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone starring “Expend4bles,” the latest installment of the action franchise, which filmed in Thessaloniki.
Last year, production in Greece reached record heights, with 132 projects supported by the country’s cashback scheme, which covers up to 40% of qualifying expenditures and can be combined with a separate 30% tax relief scheme. This year, Pablo Larrain’s Maria Callas biopic “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie,...

Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) has signed on to star in Bad Apples, a project that’s described as “a biting satirical comedy with thriller elements”. The film will mark the English language debut of Swedish filmmaker Jonatan Etzler (One More Time) and is set to start filming in the UK in the spring of 2024. Bad Apples is being made under an Equity contract, so it will still be able to go into production even if the Screen Actors Guild isn’t over by then… although we hope it will be.
Scripted by Jess O’Kane, Bad Apples is based on the Rasmus Lindgren novel De Oönskade. It will tell the story of Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. With her career in question and the child’s behavior spiraling, she makes a...

One of the most intriguing films of the fall is a new genre-bending film from Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou. Nikou started as an assistant director and second unit director on films like Richard Linklater’s “Before Midnight,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Dogtooth.” He then made shorts and then graduated to feature-length filmmaking with his acclaimed 2020 film, “Apples,” which Cate Blanchett loved so much she came on as an executive producer.

Greek writer-director Christos Nikou wanted to explore the modern concept of love when he approached his English-language debut Fingernails starring Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed and Luke Wilson. Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders London event, the Apples director admitted that the concept of dating apps and using algorithms to find love was an idea that intrigued him.
“I was always trying to understand what love is and why we are so obsessed with love and why we’re looking for love,” said Nikou. “But, also, I think that right now a lot of people, and especially from the younger generation, are looking at love in a different way. I mean, imagine that they are letting an algorithm decide about them and they are using their finger to swipe right or left in order to find the perfect match that is compatible for them. Sometimes when you have a terrific film but it doesn’t quite have the hook for mainstream audiences, you sometimes need a catchy ace in the hole. And that’s exactly what the Australian film “Shayda” has in its executive producers, in this case, a little actor you may know named Cate Blanchett, plus her husband and producing partner Andrew Upton and Coco Francini. Blanchett has been lending her name to a lot of international cinema worthy of a boost of late (Greece’s “Apples”), and along with recent collaboration with Sparks and Guy Maddin (and an almost collaboration with Pedro Almodovar that came close), it appears as if Blanchett has really reaffirmed her commitment to global and left-of-field cinema this year, so good for her.

But in the last few years, the event has cemented itself into a festival reputed for championing new talent and emerging voices across all sections of its programming.

Is love quantifiable? No, but that doesn’t stop Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou from exploring that question over two dull, excruciating hours in Fingernails, his second feature and first in English. Like his directorial debut Apples, which concerned a man recovering from an amnesia-inducing illness that spreads worldwide, Fingernails concocts a high concept that attempts to look at an aspect about the human condition. In this case it’s love, as Nikou and co-writers Sam Steiner and Stavros Raptis imagine a world where a couple’s love can be measured as an objective figure through technology. Directed as a droll dramedy with a cast that can all do better than this, Fingernails is a pointless effort at finding something more from a truism.

The passing pleasures of watching the fine young actors Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed and Jeremy Allen White can’t make up for the increasing distaste that develops from contact with Fingernails, an irritating and, finally, ridiculous examination of relationship matchmaking carried far too far. Greek director Christos Nikou won unanimous critical plaudits for his compellingly eerie debut feature Apples, which dealt with amnesia patients, and here again he appears drawn to troubled and mysterious states of mind that develop in the quest for love, commitment and some sense of security in modern life. The film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival and screened at the Toronto Film Festival.
If love means never having to say you’re sorry, as the 1970 smash hit Love Story ridiculously proclaimed, then the by-word for this new exploration of modern amour should be that love means letting your would-be soulmate yank all your fingernails out.

Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails” effectively pathologizes the unspoken secret at the heart of the romantic comedy genre: Falling in love is the easiest thing in the world, but staying in love is something you have to work on every day if you want it to last that long.
It’s a secret epitomized (and half-heartedly acknowledged) by the likes of “Love, Actually,” a sprawling matrix of warm and fuzzy crushes in which the only married couple is mired in an unresolvable crisis. Everybody gets verklempt at a grand gesture or a mad dash to the airport in the third act, but what happens after the credits roll? What happens when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan get...

During a recent edition of her “Scheananigans” podcast, Shay discussed her longstanding friendship with Sandoval, and how everything changed when he cheated on longtime girlfriend Ariana Madix with their co-star Rachel (formerly Raquel) Leviss.
“I have personally really struggled with all this because I’m like, ‘Yes, you did a really bad thing. But you weren’t a bad friend to me.'”

It’s not every director who gets to turn Cate Blanchett down. Rarer still for a first-time filmmaker from Europe whose arty, offbeat debut — a poetic, surreal, soulful meditation on memory and grief — might have easily escaped the attention of Hollywood royalty.
But “Apples,” by Greek director Christos Nikou, charmed audiences after its 2020 premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Blanchett presided over the main competition jury. After being wowed by a film that would go on to complete the fall-festival trifecta at Telluride and Toronto, Blanchett reached out to the filmmaker for a sit-down on the Lido.
When he read the text, Nikou couldn’t believe his eyes.
“‘No, that’s a joke,’” he recalls thinking at the time, adding with an embarrassed laugh that he considered skipping the meeting altogether. But Nikou’s better judgment got the best of him, and when Blanchett did indeed turn up for their breakfast tête-à-tête,...

Telluride – We’re just gonna get the bad news out of the way first. There is perhaps no movie more personally – and emphasis on “personally” – disappointing at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival for this critic than Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails.” As a big fan of his exquisite 2020 debut, “Apples,” we were crossing our fingers that he’d avoid the dreaded sophomore slump. We’re sad to report that’s not the case.

In the present-day-adjacent time period in the unspecified city where Fingernails unfolds, a newish technology has been embraced by a growing number of couples. Promising “no more uncertainty” and “no more divorce,” the simple but physically daunting test enables people to be sure they’ve found a true love connection. All that’s required is the removal of one fingernail from each participant. There will be blood, yes, but mainly there’s a well-written and beautifully performed investigation of yearning and the mysterious realm that apps and algorithms can only profess to quantify.

Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails,” one of the buzziest films to premiere on the fall festival circuit this year, explores the problem with love in a recognizable world just slightly off its axis — that’s precisely because the “Apples” director, for his second feature, eschews any use of cell phones or 21st century onscreen technology.
Jessie Buckley plays Anna, a woman who’s comfortable and content but perhaps unchallenged by her relationship with sweet husband Ryan (Jeremy Allen White). They’ve mainly stayed together for a handful of years because of a test developed by The Love Institute, which uses a simple technology to determine if a couple is actually in love, and if you’re with the person you’re supposed to be.
“Fingernails” sounds like heady sci-fi on the surface, but its premise is pretty simple: Submit yourself to a research facility that rips you and your lover’s fingernails off,...

Forget reading palms: What if the key to finding your soulmate was at the tip of your fingernail?
Director Christos Nikou’s (“Apples”) feature “Fingernails” offers a sci-fi love triangle rooted in nature over nurture. The film is co-written by Nikou, Stavros Raptis, and Sam Steiner, and is set in an alternate reality where a machine can determine whether a couple is in love or not by studying the makeup of their discarded fingernails.
Jessie Buckley stars as Anna, a new employee at the institute where the machines are housed. She starts training with senior instructor Amir (Riz Ahmed). Yet Anna is already dating Ryan (Jeremy Allen White) and the machine has confirmed they are a perfect match. So why is she developing feelings for Amir?

First must come the consumer warning. I read this digitally, which means flipping through the pages would have been more cumbersome than with a physical book, and I took the “152 pages” as an indication of the length of the story.
Reader, I was misled.
Only the End of the World Again is a 48-page story, bulked out by an sketchbook section exactly twice its size that shows the thumbnail layouts and un-lettered final inks for each page side-by-side, presumably for fans of art to take a magnifying glass to them and make various low appreciative noises in the back of their throats for the next several hours. I did not do so; that’s not how I read books.
If you do want to spend several hours with those earlier versions of the same story, though, this may well be a positive for you. It takes all kinds to make a world,...

The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White is going from the kitchen to an institute that aims to calculate the depths of one person’s love for another in Apple Original Films Fingernails. The English-language feature hails from Christos Nikou, the award-winning filmmaker behind 2020’s Apples and several other projects.
Fingernails is a science-fiction love story about an institution developing a test to measure the amount of love between couples. Is their love genuine? Does a pattern of constant compromise weaken their bond over time? The institute wants couples to succeed, though keeping the fire burning is more complex than one might assume. In the film, Anna (Buckley) starts working at the institute as an assistant to Trevor (Ahmed), an enigmatic instructor. Meanwhile, White plays Ryan, Anna’s long-time partner in a certified love relationship.
Nikou directs Fingernails from a script he co-wrote with Stavros Raptis and Sam Steiner.
