The verdict is out. The audience has spoken. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus debut series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” is a global hit for Netflix, dancing to second position on the streamer’s worldwide non-English TV chart.
Spanning 1920 through 1947, the lavish story is set in the Heeramandi district of Lahore, British India, the milieu of the tawaifs. As with the geisha of Japan, tawaifs were trained in music and dance and courted by nobility. At the show’s center are Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the scheming queen of Heeramandi, and her vindictive niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who has ambitions to take her aunt’s place.
“Heeramandi” is Netflix’s biggest-budget Indian original to date and the biggest undertaking of Bhansali’s storied career. The filmmaker is no stranger to film hits, including his last theatrical release, 2022’s “Gangubai Kathiawadi.” While he is used to the ‘Friday report card’ as Indian...

Netflix has unveiled a spectacular trailer for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.”
The series is set in Heeramandi, Lahore, British India, where Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala) rules over an elite house of courtesans. She schemes, fearing no one — until the return of her late nemesis’ daughter, Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), brings tensions in the house to a boil. Outside, the city is also roiling, with revolutionaries demanding India’s freedom from British rule, with Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari), one of Mallikajaan’s daughters, joining the fight for freedom. Meanwhile, Mallikajaan’s youngest, Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal), dreams of love with the son of a nobleman, Tajdar (Taha Shah Badussha), and yearns to break out of Heeramandi. As betrayal mounts and forbidden desires clash with societal norms, the struggle for pre-independent India’s freedom comes to a boiling point. Box Office – Tabu, Kareena, Kriti’s Crew is amongst Top-5 biggest weekend openers for a female centric film, edges past Alia Bhatt’s Dear Zindagi ( Photo Credit – Instagram; iMDb )
Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have done it. Their film has gone beyond just the opening day bonanza and has now done consistently well right through the weekend as well. It has been a bountiful score for the film, allowing it to find a place amongst the Top-5 weekend openers of all time. Interestingly, three out of these have come post-pandemic – Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kerala Story, and Crew, each of which belongs to a different genre. That said, while the first two in the list are hard-hitting dramas, its Crew, which is light-hearted.
In fact, there is more. If one looks at the entire Top 10, then it’s only Crew and Veere Di Wedding which are light-hearted whereas the remaining eight all are drama.

Mumbai, March 7 (Ians) In an industry where films have traditionally been scripted around men, and woman-centric films have been the exceptions rather than the rule, a new generation of directors and screenwriters have overturned the gender imbalance, and delivered successful films centred around female protagonists.
On the eve of International Women’s Day, here’s a selection of seven Bollywood films that celebrate woman power.
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, Alia Bhatt (2022): The Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, a biopic based on the life of ‘mafia queen’ Gangubai Kothewali, is centred around Alia Bhatt’s character, who was cheated and sold to a brothel in Kamathipura, Mumbai. From there, she allied with local politicians and the underworld to become a ‘don’ who was dreaded as much as she was respected for her good deeds.
The movie made news for being the first female-centric production to rake in a hefty Rs 210 crore in a...

Dunki Box Office (Worldwide): Shah Rukh Khan Surpasses Not One Or Two But Nine Films’ Lifetime Total… (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki has entered the 200 crore club (worldwide) in just five days, thanks to Shah’s firm hold in the international markets. Its nasty box office clash with Prabhas’ Salaar has resulted in what everyone kind of predicted the outcome to be. But, despite all the roadblocks, Rajkumar Hirani’s yet another attempt at bringing back families together in cinema halls rejoicing in the festive spirit seems to be doing its thing.
In India, the film has managed to clock 105.63 crores in 5 days, which proves why Srk certainly deserves to flaunt the tag of ‘Overseas Box Office King.’ Why so? Many of you may ask! It’s because the film has collected in a similar range internationally as it has earned back home.
