Thirty years after making his debut, John Cusack is still a Hollywood outsider. Now 45, the star of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven talks about mortality, his Brat Pack past – and why he wishes he could work a room
John Cusack is puffing on a fat cigar. It's incongruous, seeing him dressed all in cool, casual black, sucking on a Cohiba, like a goth who has crashed a Hollywood mogul's house party. "Yeah, maybe we shouldn't mention the cigar," he says. "I don't want people to think I'm this movie cliche. I'm certainly not a mogul – in fact, nothing could be further from the truth."
I don't think there's any danger of Cusack being mistaken for a movie mogul. But the cigar begins to feel somehow appropriate. The more he smokes it, the more at ease he becomes with it, until he owns that damn cigar and waggles it like a spare,...

What influences and future directions for Tim Burton might be found within the six minutes of the stop-motion short film, Vincent? More than you’d expect, we’d guess…
Alice of Wonderland fame is only the most recent young person to receive the Tim Burton creative treatment in what is the latest of his high profile films. But unless you own the special two-disc edition of The Nightmare Before Christmas, you may not be familiar with an early animated Burton short from 1982 called Vincent.
Narrated by Vincent Price, though not the Vincent of the story, he has a very direct link to it in a six minute long poem in which seven-year-old Vincent Malloy wants nothing more than to be just like his idol, Vincent Price.
Vincent's comically dark and overactive imagination has him reliving the stories of Price's films and, like often happens in real life, an adult is constantly interfering.

Every now and again our genre sees a glimmer of hope. For every seven remakes, rip-offs, and sequels, there always pops up a project that sounds cool enough to keep an eye on. Enter James McTeigue's take on Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.
Recently McTeigue chatted with /Film about breathing some life into this old bird.
“It’s like the poem, 'The Raven', itself, crossed with 'Se7en'," he tells the site. "It should be pretty cool. The script is really good and everyone responds to it really well. I’m in the middle of casting.”
The film will be coming courtesy of FilmNation Entertainment and Endgame and is set during the last days of Edgar Allan Poe's life, when he gets entangled in a serial killer investigation. Hit the above link for more!

Here! -- the premium network aimed at gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender audiences -- has ramped up its original programming efforts with several series renewals. It also has recently greenlighted original movies in the wake of strengthened distribution.
The network approved more seasons of several original series, including second installments of The Lair and The DL Chronicles and a third season of Paradise Falls. In addition, Chad Allen will star as a private investigator in two fresh cases of its Donald Strachey Mystery movie franchise.
These pickups -- along with the recently announced series Ryan's Life, starring Rue McClanahan, and a third-season renewal of Dante's Cove -- mean that Here! will field more than 200 hours of original programming for the 2007-08 season, with five of its series entering a second or third season.
Meanwhile, the network has in the works a movie titled Solar Flare, the first of 12 eco-disaster films that will be released in theaters by sister company Regent a week before debuting on Here! The movie, starring Tracey Gold and Michelle Clunie, centers on a scientist (Gold) who works with a mother (Clunie) and her prodigy son, who has worked out a formula for predicting solar flares.
Also in the works is House of Usher, the second planned installment in a series of 12 movies based on Edgar Allan Poe tales following The Raven. It will premiere on Here! a week after making its debut in theaters.
"We have made a huge commitment to original programming with established stars," Here! Networks founder and CEO Paul Colichman said.
