Seeing Stars in Hollywood and New York

9 hours ago | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Wanna hear something amusingly ironic about the stateside star system? Just as the Hollywood Powers That Be are being forced to consider the lessening impact of box-office stars, the Broadway Powers That Be are concluding the only box-office sure-things are star names. Think about, for instance, the box office weakness of Tom Cruise's Valkyrie or the so-so results for Jim Carrey's A Christmas Carol. Consider the humongous success of the Twilight series, which has made stars of Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart but maybe only for sequels and not when they appear in anything else. Now ruminate at what fortunes are likely to be reaped by star-name-less special-effects spectacles like James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar, despite its blizzard-plagued opening week. (Is Cameron a box-office name? -- the jury's still out.) Notice that the »

Bryan Singer on Monday gave a lengthy, revealing interview about his upcoming projects, including his recently disclosed bombshell X-Men: First Class, his likely Valkyrie follow-up Jack the Giant Killer, and the more slowly developing Battlestar Galactica and Excalibur. If it's a lot for a fan to contemplate, just imagine how overwhelming it must be for Singer himself to even begin attacking the material. Thankfully, he said, he expects to get plenty of quiet, undisturbed work done this week at his regular Hawaiian haunt. He'll even tell you where -- sort of -- in case you want to check it out yourself. »

Bryan Singer to Re-Team with X-Men

17 December 2009 10:23 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Given the analogous fortunes of Bryan Singer and the X Men franchise it may come as no surprise to learn that Singer has just signed a deal to get involved with X Men: First Class Origins.

Speaking on the blue carpet of the L.A. premiere of James Cameron’s Avatar Singer told MySpace (via Dark Horizons) that after his rendition of Jack the Giant Killer he will start work on the next X Men film, which is said to focus on early years of our favourite X men and women at Charles Xavier’s academy.

Valkyrie was a great suspense film but it followed the box office disappointment of  Superman Returns, and Singer needs a decent return on his new venture. He has always impressed with solid film making as long as the script is tight enough to take advantage of his strengths as a director. And X2 remains »

Bryan Singer Returning To ‘X-Men’ Franchise

17 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Probably the biggest news during the premiere of James Cameron’s new film Avatar came from outside the theater on the blue carpet when MySpace’s camera crew talked with Bryan Singer, who spilled the beans on his next projects. First up, seems to be Jack the Giant Killer – written by Mark Bomback (Live Free and Die Hard) and Darren Lemke, about a princess that goes missing, and disrupts a truce between man and giants. And Singer says, he’s gearing up to use the same technology that Avatar used.

But that’s not the biggest news from the premiere. Singer also said: “I just yesterday signed a deal to do an ‘X-Men: First Class Origins’ picture, which is kind of cool. I’m very excited.” The movie was originally said to be in the hands of Chuck and Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz and also had writer Zak Penn, »

Bryan Singer is Returning to the X-Men Franchise

17 December 2009 7:10 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

A lot of rumors have been spread after the critical failures of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine that the director of X-Men and X2 would be returning to the series he abandoned for Superman Returns.

The rumors are true. According to /Film, Bryan Singer let it slip at the Avatar premiere last night that he would be coming back for more in X-Men Origins: First Class:

“I’m prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer at Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool.”

While who knows what this means for Singer’s career (his personal outings of Superman Returns and Valkyrie were pretty legitimate flops, or at least didn’t get the reception they sought). But this means great things for the X-Men franchise, which has missed Singer »

Singer Returns To "X-Men" Franchise

16 December 2009 11:05 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

On the 'blue carpet' at last night's premiere of James Cameron's "Avatar" in Los Angeles, MySpace spoke with director Bryan Singer who let slip that he's returning to the franchise that made him a household name - "X-Men".

"I'm ramping up to do a movie called 'Jack the Giant Killer' at Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an 'X-Men: First Class Origins' picture, which is kind of cool. I'm very excited" said Singer. 'First Class' looks at the early days of Cyclops, Jean Grey and others at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

The hope is obviously to bring back some prestige to both the franchise and the filmmaker himself. Singer's "X-Men" and especially its follow-up "X2" scored strong critical reviews and were financial successes for Fox.

The subsequent two 'X-Men' films, helmed by Brett Ratner and Gavin Hood, did financially very »

Bill Nighy: 'I am not suddenly the greatest actor in the world'

19 November 2009 3:54 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The star of Stephen Poliakoff's forthcoming Glorious 39 on his neuroses, playing educated toffs and why he digs David Hare

"A machiavellian dandy . . . Pure coldheartedness . . . Fabulously insincere." As I read out reviews of an old Bill Nighy performance, the actor grimaces and drums his knuckles on the table. "If ever a face was made for villainy, it's Bill Nighy's," I continue. "Wow," he murmurs. "Nighy's decadently long jaw and narrow, sneaky eyes serve him well . . ." He snorts, amused. "Sneaky eyes! Long decadent jaw! My God. I didn't know I had a decadent jaw."

Perhaps it is how Glorious 39 unfolds around him that makes you never quite trust Nighy as Alexander Keyes, a devoted father and aristocratic Conservative MP in Stephen Poliakoff's sumptuous new thriller about appeasement, set on the eve of the second world war. But perhaps Nighy has a singular talent for projecting unreliability into charming characters. »

Eddie Izzard: 'I'm still a transvestite'

9 November 2009 7:20 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Eddie Izzard has maintained that he is still a transvestite, despite being in "boy mode" for a number of years. The stand-up told the South Wales Echo that he has stuck to male clothing in recent times to help his continuing acting career. Izzard said: "I believed that if I had turned up for the auditions for [HBO show] The Riches or Valkyrie in makeup and a dress, I would not get the roles. "I tell everyone I'm a transvestite over and over again. I insist and I beg people to believe it on TV - and I never thought that I would be on TV begging people to believe I'm a transvestite. Izzard Unrecognised As Transvestite In U.S.

9 November 2009 12:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British funnyman Eddie Izzard struggles to convince Americans he's a transvestite after toning down his cross-dressing while concentrating on his acting career.

Izzard's prominence has increased in the U.S. after roles in TV series The Riches and 2008 thriller Valkyrie - but he admits the country has yet to acknowledge him as a transvestite.

However, he will soon break out of "boy mode" and show Americans his more colourful side.

Izzard explains, "I tell everyone I'm a transvestite over and over again. I never thought that I would be on TV begging people to believe I'm a transvestite. But I am being strategic about this. I've been in 'boy mode' for the past few years but I know I can be in 'girl mode' if I want to.

"I would know what to do. It's all still there. It's in my toolbox. I am a card-carrying transvestite. Always have been, always will be." »

Angelina Jolie May Now Be Traveling With Johnny Depp And A 'Harry Potter' Director In 'The Tourist'

5 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"The Tourist" has had quite a ride these past few months. Further back than that even. First it was a possible "Valkyrie" follow-up for Tom Cruise. Then Charlize Theron started negotiating to star alongside Cruise. Following a year of silence on the project, the news broke last month that Angelina Jolie was now in talks to replace Theron. And somewhere in there, "Terminator Salvation" star Sam Worthington stepped in to replace Cruise.

That's not even mentioning the director changes. Bharat Nalluri was originally set to direct, way back when Cruise was still on the project. He fell off somewhere in the past year, and "The Lives of Others" director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck only recently stepped in to possibly replace him. It turns out that that's not happening either. Now it seems that "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" director Alfonso Cuaron may be moving in to helm, and »
