In the first review that R Balki read of his 2007 debut feature ‘Cheeni Kum’, a top critic of the time trashed the film, sending the filmmaker into a “deep depression,” as he says, despite the film being otherwise well received and friends telling him that one person’s opinion did not matter, reports ‘Variety’.
“It mattered to me and somewhere that thought hit me that how is it that you [the critic] can say whatever you want, and get away and I’m accountable to you, but you’re not accountable to me,” Balki said in a conversation with ‘Variety’. “I found that unfairness in the whole relationship firstly depressing and then very fascinating.”
The director, who went on to make ‘Paa’ (2009) with Amitabh Bachchan and ‘The Pad Man’ (2018), starring Akshay Kumar, is returning to the big screen with ‘Chup’, a thriller where a serial killer brutally murders Bollywood film critics and...

The cast also includes Bollywood veterans Sunny Deol (“Gadar: Ek Prem Katha”) and Pooja Bhatt (Netflix’s “Bombay Begums”), Shreya Dhanwanthary (Amazon Prime Video’s “The Family Man”) and Tamil-language cinema stalwart Saranya Ponvannan (“Viruman”).
Balki, whose credits include “Cheeni Kum” (2007) and “Paa” (2009), both starring Amitabh Bachchan, last directed “Pad Man” (2018), starring Akshay Kumar.
Salmaan is a rare breed in Indian cinema in that he has equal felicity in multiple languages. Known for originality in his stories and story telling, for presenting unexplored themes in a commercial format, ‘Chup’ is filmmaker R Balki’s most ambitious film till date. Ambition not in big budget terms but in scale of thought. Releasing on 23rd September, 2022, it’s a romantic psychopath thriller, a thought he had after ‘Cheeni Kum’ and decided to write it much later. The poster revealing the release date released today.
Speaking of the same R Balki said, “Chup is special for more than one reason. For me the biggest reason is it marks the official debut of Amitabh Bachchan as a music composer. Amitji saw Chup and played an instinctive original melody on his piano as he relived the film. It was his way of expressing his feelings for the film, paying a tribute. This composition, his gift to the film, will be the end title track of Chup.

Noting the unusual plot of the film -- as well as the other films he has worked on with Balki -- the veteran actor said: "Every time I work with him (Balki), he comes up with these weird ideas. I keep asking him how the hell will you be able to execute this, and what the heck have you been drinking before you thought of this. But he has been successful in all his endeavours. If one is a legend himself, the other one is a super star and the one who is bringing them together, is himself a pool of talent whose works are class apart. Yes, Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar are teaming up for none other than R.Balki’s next film. Balki has made his name speak louder whenever we want to watch something that gives us an 'out-of-the -box' experience. With the most unusual themed films in his bag, this ad-man turned director has paved his own way in to previously dominated commercial segment of the films. ‘Cheeni Kum’, ‘Paa’, ‘Shamitabh’ and lately the role reversal film ‘Ki and Ka’, Balki’s films have got that X-factor to get hits. Akshay has shared screen with Amitabh in ‘Family’, ‘Waqt’ and ‘Aan-Men at work’ and their paring has fetched success ratings. Now, after almost 10 years, they will be seen working together.

Ki & Ka has taken a good opening at the Box Office. As was predicted, the film was on track to register 40%-50% occupancy on Day One, and this is how the average footfalls turned out to be eventually. The film has collected 7.3 crore on Friday and this is a good start for the Eros and Balki production, considering the genre, release size and target audience that it was aiming for.
This is the biggest opener ever for Balki as Ki & Ka [7.3 crore] on its opening day has collected more than double of Shamitabh [3.5 crore] and is far ahead of Paa [2.15 crore] and Cheeni Kum [which had lifetime total of 17.3 crore]. The film has also taken a bigger opening than a much massy Ghayal Once Again [7.2 crore] and targeted-at-similar-audience Kapoor & Sons [6.85 crore]. The way word of mouth is spreading for the film, the film is set to have the second highest weekend of the year.

In a week from now, Ki & Ka would be hitting the screens. While all seems hunky dory for now, what with the duo dancing to the tune of ‘High Heels’ and also exchanging some banter as the couple on screen, one wonders if Balki has kept the entire narrative of the film fun and frothy, or is there going to be some tension in the air as well for them?
“Well, it is a relationship driven film and there are bounds to be ups and downs. Of course the beauty of the film is that none of them gets over burdening either for the characters or the audience,” says Arjun, who plays Kareena’s house-husband in the film.
“Yes, issues do keep coming in the life of Ki and Ka; however they are strong enough individuals to come together and solve them all,” continues Arjun, “There are pressures from the...

R. Balki’s movies aren’t usually known for their music, as Cheeni Kum and Paa had one gem of a song, but Ki & Ka is the exception because it’s quite a funky album. The trailers gave us a snippet of ‘High Heels’ and ‘Most Wanted Munda’ that completely suited the quirky romance which gives a new spin on gender dynamics. Instead, he’s recruited the Meet Bros, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Mithoon, and Ilayaraja for this patchy but fun album.
If you’re thinking you’ve heard High Heels before, you probably have with Jaz Dhami and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s original song that came out in 2012. I actually prefer this version because the duo have removed the cheesy electro beats of the original hook, and have used Aditi Singh Sharma. Sharma kills her verses and delivers them with attitude, especially with the sassy lines “To meri...

Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor will be seen together for the first time in this movie that seems to break all the stereotypes of the so traditional Indian society.
See, Ki and Ka is about… as we know – A woman can achieve anything a man can. But are the men prepared for the ultimate role reversal? It is the story of Kia and Kabir, two young Indian people who hit on very well after meeting each other. They know what they want to do in life but their ambitions are nothing you could expect. While Kia is a woman who wants to become a CEO,...

One of the best actresses in Indian cinema, Tabu has given outstanding performances in films in the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali and Hindi film industries. One of the qualities that makes her such a good actress is that you never feel as if she is acting. She completely commits to her role and the arc her character goes through and she takes us on that journey with her. The actress has garnered rave reviews, as well as 2 National Awards, been awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to cinema and many other awards during her career so far and she is still going strong.
In celebration of her birthday today we thought we would shine the light on one of our favorite actresses.

Popular actress and wife of veteran Paresh Rawal, Swaroop Sampat, has been away from the silver screen for quite some time now. The veteran actress however is all set to return in a glamorous role in R. Balki's next titled Ki and Ka. The film will have Swaroop Sampat playing the role of the leading lady Kareena Kapoor Khan's mother. According to the actress, she will be seen in a rather classy avatar wearing suits and dresses designed by Manish Malhotra. It is not surprising to see Swaroop in this fashionable look, considering that Kareena, who plays her daughter in the film, will be seen as a stylish corporate woman. Further, Swaroop also added that she doesn't consider this a comeback and the only reason she agreed to do the film is because she is really fond of Balki and Gauri. She had built a great rapport when she met them in London,...

R. Balki's films have always been given unique titles. Whether it was his directorial debut Cheeni Kum or his most recent film Shamitabh, each time he announces the title of his film there is an immediate curiosity and a myriad questions to their meaning relevance and validity. But even by his known track record of unexpected titles Balki's next directorial venture's title will take your breath away. The director has named his next film Ki And Ka. Now before everyone asks what it means, here's the director Balki himself with the explanation. "Ki And Ka ...that's the short form for Ladki And Ladka." The film stars Kareena Kapoor Khan as a working wife and Arjun Kapoor as a house husband. Hence the title on the gender difference. Says Balki, "Ki And Ka exist only in Hindi. In no other language is the gender spelt out in this way. That's...

Amitabh Bachchan's last release that was directed by R. Balki didn't quite make the cut at the box office. However, despite the film's low key response, we hear that Bachchan will soon be seen working with the director again for their fourth collaboration after Cheeni Kum, Paa and Shamitabh.
While we know that Bahchcan will be teaming up with Balki, the interesting part is that joining them will be none other than Jaya Bachchan who were last seen sharing screen space in the 2012 Bhojpuri film Ganga Devi that was produced by their make-up man, Deepak Savant. However, for those of you who think it will be yet another Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, we hear that their roles will be restricted to a cameo that will be wrapped in a two day shoot. If that wasn't enough, we hear that the two actors will be seen playing themselves, a superstar power couple.

Respect film critics if you have invited them!
Kabir Khan created a brilliant climax scene for Bajrangi Bhaijaan. People from India and Pakistan converged on both sides in an attempt to set Pavan Kumar Chaturvedi free. Now, Pavan had completed a noble task of ensuring Munni was safe back with her parents and citizens from both countries were pushing for justice.
At Fun Republic in Versova, Andheri, in Mumbai, a similar scene was being enacted before the Press Show.
Apparently, there was a movie contest where winners were being given their free tickets. The film critics and assorted media was there too, on invitation. However, one had to push through the crowd to get to the front only to be told by the usher that we would have to enter with the tickets.
Fair enough!
But where were the tickets and the hosts? Obviously, since they had not planned themselves,...

After Tevar which was one of the first releases of the year, Arjun Kapoor didn't sign any new film. However, now it seems that the actor has finally found the kind of script he has been looking for. Arjun Kapoor will be teaming up with none other than R Balki, who last directed Shamitabh that released in February.
Surprisingly, it is the first time that R. Balki has paired up with a Gen Y star since his previous films (Paa, Cheeni Kum, Shamitabh) had Amitabh Bachchan in the lead. On the other hand, Arjun Kapoor is too stepping into a new zone of romantic comedy, considering that most of his past films had him playing an angry young rebel. Moreover, from what we hear, R Balki is also on a lookout for an established actress to play the female lead.

This Bollywood tale about a mute who tries to be a movie star fails to follow through on the theme of losing one’s authentic voice in a film industry rife with phonies
The Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been universally recognised as a voice of authority for some time: it’s why Baz Luhrmann cast him as Jewish gangster Meyer Wolfsheim in his Gatsby remake. Back home, Bachchan has partnered with writer-director R Balki for a trio of films examining the pitfalls of ageing. After 2007’s crowd-pleasing May-December romance Cheeni Kum and 2009’s peculiar Benjamin Button variant Paa, the new release Shamitabh forms the pair’s most self-reflexive endeavour yet: a movieland tale that finds Bachchan playing a former performer whose voice soars over his drastically reduced circumstances.

Shamitabh is the sole notable release of the week and should take a decent opening at the box office. while the promotion hasn’t gone overboard, the kind of brand value that the combination of Amitabh Bachchan and R. Balki carry, courtesy Paa and Cheeni Kum, ensures that this would be yet another quality film in the offering. One thing that has always worked for films coming from the house of Balki and Gauri Shinde (English Vinglish) is originality. In that aspect, even Shamitabh is expected to deliver since it has a novel subject to it. Moreover, with Dhanush and Akhshara Haasan, there is freshness in cast too.
Eros is giving the film an optimal release, which means opening day occupancy of around 40% would ensure that good word of mouth results in decent momentum over the weekend. Since it is a solo release of the week and the only competition...

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, South Indian star Dhanush and Bollywood debutant Akshara Hassan attended a UK press conference on Tuesday morning to promote the upcoming comedy/drama Shamitabh. The press conference took place at the 5-star Taj Hotel in London, where the cast spoke about the film and more ahead of its release on 6 February.
Speaking about the film, Mr. Bachchan said the following: “A lot of people have been intrigued by the title and the fact that my name and Dhanush’s name has been incorporated in the title means that it has been done for some kind of sensation. That’s not true because Shamitabh comes from the script of the film and when you see the film you will know why it’s there. The other thing that can be said is that I will be giving my voice to Dhanush as a character in the film.

While Bollywood stars are following the trend of giving voices to their own songs, Amitabh Bachchan, a veteran and legend had started singing for his films decades ago. After even singing for films like Kahaani ('Ekla Chalo'), Amitabh has now decided to croon for the R. Balki film Shamitabh.
Previously, R. Balki worked with Big B in the superhit film Paa which also starred Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan as well. Amitabh had sung a song for that film too titled 'Mere Paa'. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was one of those who gave a moving statement on his relationship with Sehgal, with whom he worked with in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Saawariya (2007). “My experience of working with Zohraji in the two films I did with her, would remain with me until I die,” says Bhansali. “She could create her own universe for each character without going into too much background detail. I certainly hoped to complete a hat-trick of films with Zohra Sehgal by doing one more film with her. I hoped she’d out-live us all.”

The quest for virgin locations has taken R. Balki to the European country of Finland to shoot Shamitabh. Balki has shot his two earlier films in Europe. Cheeni Kum was shot in London and Paa in Oxford. No Indian film film has been shot in Helsinki before. Says a source from the crew, "Balki Sir chose Helsinski after considerable thought. A portion of the plot unfolds in a European country. We needed a quaint quiet scenic European spot which hasn't been over-exposed in cinema." The Big B who is taking a keen interest in the behind-the-scenes activities for Shamitabh had a big hand in choosing Helsinski. Speaking from the location Balki said, "Ours would be the first Indian film to be shot in Helsinski. We are going to shoot in a place called Lapland close to Helsinski."...

If you are one of those die hard music lovers who grew up listening to the likes of Appu Raja, Sadma, Shiva, Anjali, Cheeni Kum, Paa and others, then, the very name of the music maestro Ilayaraja will surely ring a (musical) bell in your ears. He is the same music composer whose smash hit track 'Rakkama Kaiyathattu' from the Tamil film Dalapati has been listed as one among world's top ten songs by BBC. Well, the not-so-good news is that he suffered from chest pain yesterday while he was practicing for a function which is to be held on December 28. He was then immediately hospitalized in Apollo Hospital, Chennai. As per the latest reports, he is stable now and is likely to be discharged soon. We wish the ailing musician a speedy recovery.

Out of all the characters that you will come across in an Indian film, one that you will rarely see go astray is a mother. That too, the hero’s mother. She is an entity that restrains him with no physical bounds, gives him strength like no other energy drink, drives him to lengths beyond imagination (all within 2.5 hours) and without her, teaches him lessons universities worldwide have yet to discover. From being a sari clad soap opera box drama queen to a sophisticated career driven business magnet, she has transformed in front of us but one thing remains. The positive energy one feels from our filmi “Ma”. It may be a scene or a song, but she is there and her love unconditional. Yes, there may be some stories that forget about her, yet there is no denying, our cinematic mothers have sometimes been the saving grace for our films.

That R. Balki is planning his third project with the Big B after the path-breaking Cheeni Kum and Paa, is a well-known fact. The problem facing the filmmaker and the superstar was what kind of a film to undertake that would prove to be as innovative in the Big B's distinguished career as the two films he has done with Balki so far? After several brainstorming sessions it was decided that an intense love story is what the Big B needed at this juncture of his career. Says a source, "Both Balki and the Big B felt the Big B had not done an intense love story for quite a while. The last truly profound romantic film done by the Big B was Yash Chopra's Silsila. And that was way back in 1981. Balki began scripting a love story about an aging couple and hoped to cast Sridevi opposite the Big B.
