Director David Twohy has been quoted in recent interviews as saying he had to battle with the studio to allow the movie to continue on with an R-rating instead of a PG-13 version.
While filming, stars Timothy Olyphant and Steve Zahn went to Jamaica to film the cove sequence in the kayaks. Olyphant said "You can get weed from anyone in Jamaica. You don't buy it cause everybody has it. There's no weed for sale. [...] One time I walked by the gardner of the hotel and he reeked of weed. Then you go to the lobby and they're also high. You can get room service to bring you weed. I am not making it up. They'll leave it on your bedside table. Part of the turndown service, a little joint on the bedside table."
When asked if the production team made her train for the part, star Kiele Sanchez said she was already training for a marathon when she got the part of Gina Scruggs, but that she didn't do any fight training because she didn't think it was befitting of the character.
Most of the dialog was redone in ADR (Automated Dialog Replacement, more commonly known as "Redubbing" and less commonly known as "Looping").
Certain sequences were filmed in digital infrared to stylize them and set them apart from the rest of the film.
