Let's be honest, it's very much a product of the time, so expect the usual sexual innuendos, busty waitresses, and crusty old guests, one thing it's definitely not, is Fawlty Towers, they're not characters, they're all caricatures.
I'm not too sure how this would go down with viewers nowadays, I don't think this would be considered a classic.
I badly wanted to love it, I wanted to belly laugh the whole way through, sadly I couldn't, unfortunately it just wasn't very funny, it's Barker, so of course it's watchable. The scene where the staff try to serve dinner was perhaps the best moment, and was pretty funny.
There's no denying the sheer brilliance of Ronnie Barker, but judging by this first episode, the show was not a classic. Barker definitely adds a level of physical humour, and his ability to morph into any class or social setting is evident.
Josephine Tewson was definitely funny and charming, excellent alongside Barker.
6/10.
