Yesterday, Lucasfilm issued a press release revealing plans for an unusual new "Star Wars" TV series. Building on the success of high-profile parodies from the "Family Guy" and "Robot Chicken" crews, the Lucas camp is planning a sitcom series based on the famous galaxy far, far away. "Chicken" creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich will be "creatively involved"; the show will also feature the writing talents of Brendan Hay ("Frank TV") and direction from Todd Grimes ("Back at the Barnyard").
Lucasfilm promises a "playful and irreverent" tone, something that will likely find parallels with the "Star Wars" treatments seen in the two themed "Chicken" specials. Green summed it up very well in a statement, with a description that could apply equally to both the plans for this coming series and the tone of his previous parodies: "The Star Wars universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal,...

Variety is reporting that LucasFilm is developing a new animated Star Wars animated television sitcom series. The Daily Show/Frank TV writer Brendan Hay will be the head writer, and Robot Chicken creators/producers Seth Green and Matthew Seinreich will be "creatively involved" while daytime Emmy and Gemini Award-winner Jennifer Hill (The Backyardians) will produce with Todd Grimes (Back at the Barnyard) directing. No start date, series title or network have yet been announced (although it appears they are aiming for either Comedy Central or Cartoon Network). You might recall, Robot Chicken has collaborated with LucasFilm on a series of popular Star Wars parody specials. It seems like George Lucas has finally realized that he can make money off his own "Spaceballs." I've been told that the Clone Wars animated series has actually gotten pretty good, but I don't know many people watching it. To be fair, the people I...

On Frank TV, talented impersonator Frank Caliendo seems to be able to impersonate just about anyone -- from politicians to celebrities. Though his show has now been cancelled, you'll still be able to find him on tour and on television.
Frank TV debuted on November 20, 2008 to an audience of 3.2 million people and over two million of them were in the desirable 18-49 demographic age group -- very good numbers, especially for a late-night cable show. By the end of the first five episodes, the TBS comedy show was averaging 2.1 million viewers with 1.4 million in the 18-49 demo. That prompted TBS to order more installments and they began airing in October 2008. The last episode aired on December 23, 2008.
TBS has opted not to renew Frank TV for a second season, due in large part to ad revenue not outweighing the cost to produce the series. Both sides mutually decided to end the...

The Season 4 finale of "The Hills" wasn't able to match the numbers of the show's third-season closer.
The latest finale, which aired at 10 p.m. Monday, averaged 2.6 million total viewers, down from 3.8 million for the Season 3 closer. But the Season 4 closer aired during a holiday week -- during Hanukkah and three days before Christmas -- while the third-season finale aired in May.
Overall, the show's Season 4 total-viewers average (3 million) was off 25% from its Season 3 average (3.9 million).
MTV premieres "Hills" spinoff "The City," starring Whitney Port, at 10 p.m. Monday. "Bromance," a competition series starring "Hills" staple Brody Jenner, debuts at 9 p.m. Monday. New episodes of "Hills" are set to air in the spring.
Also airing last week was the second-season finale of TBS' "Frank TV," which averaged 948,000 viewers at 11 p.m. Tuesday. That's off 25% from the year-ago time-period average (1.3 million).

If you’ve been watching the playoffs at all, chances are pretty good you’ve seen his face. Kicking off every commercial break, coming back repeatedly like a bad habit you can’t break or that ex-hookup that just can’t take a hint. And in case you were wondering, Frank Caliendo apologizes. But this should go without saying that you know who he is. The man of many faces; with dead on impersonations of Bush, Jim Rome, Barkley, and Pacino. Because TBS beat it over your head, you probably know that the second season of his show Frank TV begins tonight on the network. Whether you like it or not, it’s hard to argue that the man does John Madden better than Madden does Madden. Boosh had a chance to sit down with the king of impersonations to talk about his show, the college years, and Wikipedia.

Frank TV made a big impression on TBS.
The cable network has ordered eight more episodes of the late-night sketch comedy show starring comedian-impressionist Frank Caliendo. The series, slated to return later this year, combines stand-up pieces shot before a live audience and segments shot on location, with Caliendo doing impersonations of celebrities ranging from John Madden to Jack Nicholson to President Bush.
Frank TV drew 3.2 million total viewers to its November premiere, including 2.1 million in adults 18-49, setting records for a late-night original series launch in cable, according to Nielsen Media Research. Overall, the show significantly improved TBS' performance in the 11 p.m. slot, averaging 2.1 million total viewers, including 1.4 million in the demo, for its initial eight-episode order.
"Frank has a very appealing everyman sensibility," said Michael Wright, senior vp in charge of the content creation group for TBS, TNT and TCM. "He laughs at the same things we all laugh at in the popular culture around us, and the show's sketches catch that comedic point of view perfectly."
Frank TV, from TBS Prods., is executive produced and written by Caliendo, Matt Wickline and John Bowman, with Barry Katz also executive producing.

Turner Entertainment Networks' TNT and TBS are diving deeper into digital waters with plans to stream all episodes of its original summer series online, the company said Tuesday.
Turner will post episodes from TNT's The Closer, Heartland, Saving Grace and The Company on TNT.tv, while TBS will offer them from House of Payne, The Bill Engvall Show, My Boys and The Frank Show on TBS.com the morning after they debut on television. The series will be available online for about a month.
"On a couple of the shows ('Engvall' and 'Frank'), we're acting as the studio, and we believe these streaming rights are integral in making a complete package for these shows to be hits," Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin said. "Our first window is with the cable operator, but we had great success with 'My Boys' where we had millions of streams, and we want to use this as just another tool to drive success for our shows."
In Turner's case, besides the content being available on the TNT and TBS network Web sites, Comcast and Time Warner also will offer the shows, except for the Fox-produced Saving Grace, for a month on each of their VOD platforms.

TBS has handed a series order to The Frank Show, a late-night sketch comedy show starring comedian Frank Caliendo.
The cable network has picked up eight episodes of the show, which will join TBS' late-night block in the second half.
Frank, from New Wave Entertainment, will be shot in front of a live audience and will include pretaped segments shot on location that will utilize Caliendo's impersonation skills. Caliendo's opening monologue as well as the many of the sketches will feature the comedian's commentaries on current events and pop culture.
" 'The Frank Show' is a smart, witty, funny and feel-good sketch comedy built around Frank Caliendo's point of view," said Michael Wright, senior vp original programming at TBS and TNT. "It's everyman's take on popular culture."
It is not clear what show Frank will be paired with in the 11 p.m. hour; TBS' reruns of Fox's hit animated comedy Family Guy is considered a strong possibility.

TBS has picked up The Bill Engvall Show to series.
The multicamera domestic comedy starring Engvall and Nancy Travis, has been given an eight-episode order for a launch this summer.
"We're very enthused about breaking new ground for the network with 'The Bill Engvall Show," said Michael Wright, senior vp of original programming for TBS and TNT. "It's a multi-camera family comedy shot in front of a studio audience, and we are absolutely thrilled with it."
Bill Engvall follows TBS' first original scripted comedy series, My Boys and 10 Items or Less, which bowed in November. It was the promising launch of the two shows -- My Boys has already been picked up for additional episodes -- that encouraged TBS brass to step up their efforts in the field.
"The critical and commercial success of our first attempts at original scripted comedy on the network was incredibly gratifying," Wright said.
With the series pickup for Bill Engvall, other TBS half-hour pilots such as Imperfect Union and Boy's Life, are not going forward, while The Frank Show is still in contention.
