New Weekend Box Office Record Led by Avatar

4 hours ago | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

It was a Christmas to remember for movie studios as the all-time weekend box office record fell behind the might of James Cameron's Avatar, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and the encore performance of those high-pitched Chipmunks based on early estimates.

Avatar led the way for its second straight weekend win with a cool $75 million from Friday through Sunday, a mere 3% drop from its opening weekend and a domestic tally of $280 million and counting. Factor in overseas business and Avatar is already at $617.3 million with $800 million to $1 billion not out of the question.

Another Fox entry, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel, beat the original's bow of $44 million by opening to $50.2 million and third place. A third film in the franchise is expected to be announced barring a catastrophic collapse heading into New Years.

Warner Bros. was hoping Sherlock Holmes could dethrone Avatar but will gladly take the $65.4 million opening and second place, »

Avatar Tops Record-Breaking Holiday Weekend

5 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In its second week in theaters, James Cameron’s Avatar topped the largest weekend box office in history that totaled an estimated $264 million in sales.  The figure may be even higher once the final numbers shake out on Monday.

Cameron’s 3D epic contributed $75 million, the second biggest second weekend in history just behind The Dark Knight’s July 2008 run.  Typically movies will see around a 50% decline between weekends, but Avatar managed to drop only 2.6% from its opening on the way to $212 million domestic and already rank 7th in 2009 grosses.

On top of that, it added another $145 million overseas for an unbelievable worldwide total thus far of $617.3 million.

Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes put up equally impressive numbers, setting the Christmas Day record with $24.9M on the holiday opening before tallying $65.4 million through Sunday.  Outside of Iron Man, it’s the biggest weekend for stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, »

Cameron's Avatar ended up the biggest, fattest movie of a big, fat box-office weekend, with an estimated $75 million Friday-Sunday. The Robert Downey Jr.-ized Sherlock Holmes finished second, but didn't settle for second, with a bigger-than-expected $65.3 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel ($50.2 million) and Meryl Streep's It's Complicated ($22.1 million) got in on the record-breaking holiday action as well. Alvin And The Chipmunks 2: The Squeakuel Review

10 hours ago | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel is the second installment in the “Chipmunks” franchise. This movie hits it’s target market right where they intended, but, grown ups may not be so entertained.

When we catch up with our favorite talking rodents they are traveling the world on tour. Alvin, voiced by Justin Long, is the center of his own universe. While Simon, voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler, and Theodore, voiced by Jesse McCartney, are happy in the background playing the teammate’s roles. Dave, played by Jason Lee, is at his wits end with Alvin and is trying to calm down his showboating when he’s thrown across the stage and seriously injured.

Having to rest, Dave plans for his boys to go home and be taken care of by his aunt. While Dave rests the boys are set to lead a normal life that includes going to school… »

‘Avatar’ beats ‘Sherlock Holmes’ for No. 1 during record-breaking Christmas weekend

11 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Without the hazards of northeast blizzards, Avatar, along with Sherlock Holmes and the sequel to Alvin and the Chipmunks, performed extremely well during a huge $263 million three-day weekend that was the largest ever for the U.S. box office.

James Cameron’s Avatar dropped off 3-percent from last week’s handicapped $77 million debut and earned another $75 million over the Christmas break, to not only squeak <snicker> past the opening of Sherlock Holmes, but to bring the 3D film to $212.3 million.

This weekend’s record breaking box office take trumped North America’s reigning biggest weekend from July 18-20, which premiered the Warner Bros. sensation, The Dark Knight, with $253.6 million.

Thanks to Avatar playing on mostly 3D screens, which also helps boost the film’s box office take with a higher priced ticket sales, the film left ample room for a good ol’ 2D movie to earn some money.

Weekend Report: Christmas Booms with 'Avatar,' 'Sherlock,' 'Alvin'

12 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The combination of Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel and other solid titles as well as Christmas landing on a Friday led to the highest-grossing weekend ever. Overall business came in at around $273 million, up 36 percent over the same timeframe last year and surpassing the previous high of $260.5 million on July 18-20, 2008, when The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! debuted.

Avatar was monolithic with an estimated $75 million, down a mere three percent from its opening. That ranks as the second-highest grossing second weekend ever, a smidgen behind The Dark Knight's $75.2 million. The sci-fi adventure's 3D sites accounted for 77 percent of business on Friday and Saturday, and the picture posted another rousing performance in IMAX, which contributed an estimated $8.8 million of the weekend gross. In ten days, the sci-fi adventure's tally stands at $212.3 million. It also continued to fly overseas, grossing an estimated $144.3 million and lifting its total to $402.9 million. »

Kevin Smith’s ‘Cop Out’ Trailer, Title Explanation

13 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Warner Bros has released a trailer for Kevin Smith’s latest film, Cop Out.  While the writer/director usually whips up his own foul-mouthed screenplays and casts his friends (for mixed results), Smith’s latest was written by someone else and stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

Here’s the trailer (also viewable in high-resolution at Apple) and below is the explanation of why it has a generic buddy cop movie title.

The repeat game and knock knock jokes?

The February 2010 movie was originally titled A Couple of Dicks, a clever double entendre on two detectives and a pair of male genitals.  Not surprisingly, the studio wasn’t thrilled with the name.  The movie was shot under the original title from the script by Mark and Robb Cullen, but a name change discussion was inevitable after the problems Smith had selling Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

13 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The biggest movie of all time (in scope if not yet in grosses) has now led to the biggest weekend of all time at the box office. James Cameron’s 3D Avatar pulled ahead of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes on Saturday, claiming a second weekend at number one with an estimated $75 million from its 3,456 theatres. But there were plenty of good tidings to go around. The film, which is now in approximately 3,456 theaters enjoyed some terrific word-of-mouth making $21,701 per theater for an additional $75 million in its second week of release. Weekend Movie News Wrap Up : December 27, 2009

14 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This week:

Avatar beats Holmes to number one; Kevin Bacon is Super; Jackson and Kilmer fire a Gun and Paramount saddle up for The Further Adventures of Doc Holiday.

Box Office

James Cameron is the “King of the World”. The Terminator has yet another Titanic hit on his hands with Avatar. The fantasy adventure epic has banked another $76 million for a magic $217 million total.

Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes had to settle for the runner-up position with a decent $65 million debut. It looks like Downey Jr. now has two action franchises to play with!

The Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel brought in another $50 million for a $84 million total. It looks like a third installment will be on the way.

Meryl Streep shows that she can still open a movie with It’s Complicated. The comedy had a $23 million opening. Never underestimate the power of Streep.

Box-Office Wrap-Up: Dec. 25 - Dec. 27, 2009

Whoa. It looks like this weekend provided the biggest three-day take in history, a whopping $264m cume for the top twelve if the estimates hold. My streak stayed alive, barely, though clearly I underestimated the strength of the weekend. I thought it would be the second best weekend of the year... instead it was the best ever. Let's break it down! #1 movie predicted correctly: 9 Weeks In A Row 1. Avatar Alert commenters Athar and 'Just Myself' both had calls in the $64m range, this one exceeded even the loftiest expectations. Avatar lost less than three percent, how's that for staying power? The worldwide cume will go over half a billion by next weekend, 20th Century Fox is coming on strong as the year closes. Result: 75.0 million (My rank: #1, $22.2m off) 2. Sherlock Holmes I saw it again this weekend and had a solid time. 'Just Myself' was closest on this one too, »

‘Alvin And The Chipmunks’ 2 Movie Brought Laughs & Entertainment

'Alvin And The Chipmunks' 2 movie brought laughs & entertainment. 20th Century Fox's new "Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel" movie hit theaters this weekend. I just got through checking it out. Contrary to other reviews I read,it was quite entertaining and brought plenty of laughs and entertainment. It stars: Jason Lee, Justin Long, David Cross, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate, Amy Poehler, and Zachary Levi. In "Alvin and The Chipmunks: The squeakuel," the chipmunks are now being taken care of by Toby (Zachary Levi) because Dave is in the hospital. They now have to go to school, which seemed a bit too unrealistic, even for this type of movie, but oh well. »

Friday Box Office: Holmes For Christmas

26 December 2009 11:30 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

There really was something elementary about uncoiling Robert Downey Jr.'s sly, sinewy Sherlock Holmes on Christmas Day, when nearly $25 million worth of holiday moviegoers flocked to the star's action-comedy riff on the famous sleuth. Avatar was not far behind, continuing its own robust run with an estimated $23.5 million. Off in fourth place behind Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel was Nancy Meyers's It's Complicated, ably overriding its R-rating with a solid $7.1 million. Let it suffice to say these gifts fit Hollywood fine, and no returns will be necessary. Read on for the full top 10. »

Box Office - 'Sherlock' Edges 'Avatar' on Christmas

26 December 2009 10:40 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It's shaping up to be a monstrous holiday weekend at the box office with two films now expected to make in the neighborhood of $60 - $70 million. Because of its Wednesday release, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel will be in that territory, as well, but it's over the five-day weekend instead of a traditional three-day frame.

Sherlock Holmes earned an estimated $25 million on Friday, and I won't say it beat Avatar so much as it just made more money that day. Avatar is right behind it ($24 million), and could take the weekend anyway, although I thought Holmes would be well below this amount to start the weekend, so if the Friday word of mouth is good, it should keep James Cameron at bay or at least keep him from winning by a wide margin.

Sherlock is playing on a few more screens, which will help, and it's more of »

Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel

25 December 2009 2:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In a year that brought us Coraline, Where the Wild Things Are, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Princess and the Frog, and Up, how can you justify the existence of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel as anything less than a mind-numbingly generic brand-name cash grab? It's a shame too, because I honestly like the Chipmunks -- or maybe I liked the Chipmunks. It has been almost twenty-five years since I watched them on television (and in their first feature film, The Chipmunk Adventure). Were they always this boring?

Forcing the Chipmunks to attend an average high school after a taste of rock and roll superstardom could've made for a pretty decent fish-out-of-water comedy (munk-out-of-tree comedy?), but that potential is wasted in favor of an uninspired battle of the bands story, pitting our boys against an all-girl group of chipmunks called the Chipettes. The girls, who are also huge Alvin and the Chipmunks fans, »
