At the breakfast table Jeff calls Eddie a Quisling, this is a term means a citizen or politician of an occupied country who collaborates with an enemy occupying force, a Traitor. The word originates from the surname of the Norwegian war-time leader Vidkun Quisling, who headed a Nazi collaborationist regime during World War II.
After Eddie puts cotton wool in his ears at the breakfast table, Jeff calls him Tufty. This is in reference to Tufty Fluffytail, a childlike red squirrel character created in 1953 by Elsie Mills at The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Tufty helped to communicate safety messages to children across the UK for many years. In 1961 the Tufty Club was formed, this was a nationwide network of local road safety groups for children.
When Eddie comes out of the shed wearing his disguise, Jeff says "meet Peter Brady". This was the main character played by Tim Turner in the TV series The Invisible Man (1958).
