A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)
In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.
This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Capture series one.
The Capture‘s first series saw Lance Corporal Shaun Emery (Callum Turner) go full circle. In episode one, he was released from prison – acquitted for a crime he had, in fact, committed – and then in episode six, he was imprisoned for a crime of which he was innocent. In between, the BBC surveillance thriller introduced viewers to a world in which you literally can’t believe your eyes. As Dci Rachel Carey (Strike‘s Holliday Grainger) discovered, the intelligence services were using ultra-sophisticated deepfake technology to conjure up court-admissible ‘evidence’ to ensure the criminal conviction of anybody they wanted convicted.
The situation turned out to be even more morally murky when the CIA whistle blower threatening to go public with the practice of CCTV footage “correction” turned out to be a double (triple?) agent planted by the CIA so that some elements...

Miles Teller in Divergent was not his favorite role. The young actor grew up and began working as an actor in 2004, but it would take nearly a decade to land a significant role. Six years after his acting career began, he landed a role in a 2010 film called Rabbit Hole. It was notable only because it also starred Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. It was 2014 before he took a role in Whiplash, the movie that won an Academy Award – before he saw his star begin to rise. It was the same year he began filming the

The streamer offered no additional information on who Mirren and Ford will play in the latest Taylor Sheridan joint, other than saying “the next story will introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.” It will bow in December and is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions.

The debut season of “American Song Contest” on NBC ended with Oklahoma’s AleXa claiming victory thanks to her psychedelic K-pop tune “Wonderland.” (Read our minute-by-minute recap of the Grand Final.) AleXa is a singer, dancer and songwriter who grew up in Tulsa but now lives in Seoul, South Korea. The day after the finale aired, Gold Derby sat down with the viral sensation to talk about her big win and what she thought of hosts Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Overwhelmed would be the correct word,” AleXa says when asked to describe what she felt the moment she won. “It was such a moment of just pure happiness and luck and gratitude, because in that moment I had my mother on my left, my father on my right, my company CEO that flew in all the way from Korea, as well as the rest of our staff.

When Arcade Fire first came roaring out of Montreal with their firmament-strafing debut, Funeral, in 2004, they promised something new, exciting, and somewhat contradictory: heroic, culturally significant indie rock. A significance-deprived world ate it right up. This band didn’t just musically honor Springsteen, U2, and Bowie in the coming years, they became those artists’ peers and collaborators. Sometimes they’ve lived up to the high expectations they set for themselves, and sometimes they haven’t. Album’s like 2007’s Neon Bible and 2010’s The Suburbs were potent expressions of underdog rock gusto.

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actress are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”), and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”). Our current odds indicate that Chastain (17/5) will take the prize, followed in order of probability by Colman (39/10), Kidman (4/1), Stewart (9/2), and Cruz (9/2).
Stewart is the only first-time nominee among the five, as each of her competitors has been involved in at least two past acting contests. Kidman’s resume is the longest, consisting of three previous lead bids for “Moulin Rouge!” (2002), “The Hours” (2003), and “Rabbit Hole” (2011) and a supporting one for “Lion” (2017). She triumphed on her second outing and is now looking to become the 15th woman to win a bookend Best Actress trophy.

Chicago – The Oscars are this upcoming Sunday, March 27th, and one of the great performances of the year – nominated for Best Actress – is Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” The producer of the film is Gigi Pritzker.

“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is remarkable because of Chastain, who portrays the infamous televangelist from college age to advanced middle age (with the use of prosthetics). The film is a balanced and nuanced story of Tammy Faye, making significant commentary on the state of America and religion during her reign of influence. The ending of the film is an artistic use of cinema – by director Michael Sholwalter – and Jessica Chastain simply kills it.

“Sexy Beast” is back, and it’s part of a slate of six international scripted originals heading to Paramount Plus, Variety can reveal.
The long-simmering “Sexy Beast” prequel series has evidently been resuscitated for the streamer after being scrapped for Paramount Network in 2020.
The U.K.-originated show, based on the cult classic film of the same name, centers on the characters of Gal Dove and Don Logan as they descend into London’s criminal underbelly during the volatile 1990s.
Paramount Plus describes the series as “a love story between two men — à la Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” It’s produced by Chapter One and Vis, with showrunner Michael Caleo (“The Sopranos”) attached.
Also heading to Paramount Plus out of the U.K. is an adaptation of the Amor Towles novel “A Gentleman in Moscow,” written by “All Creatures Great and Small” scribe Ben Vanstone.

In an ironic twist, Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of TV icon Lucille Ball could lead to her first SAG Award win for film work. The celebrated actress has emerged as a frontrunner in a topsy turvy Lead Actress race this awards season, and the SAG Award might be her latest conquest.
Kidman is certainly no stranger to this awards ceremony. “Being the Ricardos” is her 15th SAG nomination. But it might shock you to learn that Kidman’s only win with the actor’s guild came from “Big Little Lies.” She’s earned individual nominations for the films “The Hours,” “Rabbit Hole,” “The Paperboy,” “Lion,” and “Bombshell,” as well as Ensemble bids for “Moulin Rouge!,” “The Hours,” “Nine,” and “Bombshell.” None of those acclaimed film roles yielded a victory.

Twenty years ago, Halle Berry (“Monster’s Ball”) blazed a trail as the first Black woman to win a Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actress. After dipping her toes into the film acting pool with appearances in “Machete Kills” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” pop superstar Lady Gaga took on her first starring part in 2018’s “A Star Is Born.” The following year, she became the first actress since Gabourey Sidibe to be recognized by the Screen Actors Guild for her debut headlining role. Having landed in the current Best Actress lineup as the star of “House of Gucci,” she has now made history as the only woman to earn SAG nominations for both of her first two lead film performances.
Gaga’s competitors in this year’s Best Actress race are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Jennifer Hudson (“Respect”), and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”). First-time lead nominee Hudson is the group’s only past individual film acting champ, having prevailed as a supporting...

I fell in love with the maniac version of Kiefer Sutherland in the seminal vampire flick "The Lost Boys" and now I'm cursed to be mildly interested in his projects for the rest of my life! Kiefer, when will you stop with the procedural dramas and go back to the hot goth genre you were made for? Apparently, the answer to that entirely rhetorical question is "not anytime soon," because Sutherland's latest role has way more in common with Jack Bauer from "24" than it does with the platinum blonde David. Still, if you're looking for a spy series to watch while the existential dread hits, "Rabbit Hole" will...

Kiefer Sutherland‘s previously announced Paramount+ espionage drama is getting the name treatment as the streamer announced the show’s title as Rabbit Hole. Rabbit Hole follows the private espionage operative James Weir (Sutherland). Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Credit: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures) When the show picks up, James will be found in the midst of a battle over the preservation of democracy, a feat that is currently against the odds in a world that is filled with misinformation as well as behavioral manipulation, the surveillance state, and the varying interests that control these all-encompassing powers. Paramount Plus revealed Tuesday it is moving forward on developing TV series remakes of classic ’80s movies “Urban Cowboy” and “Flashdance,” bringing on “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien to write and direct the latter project.
Additionally, the ViacomCBS-owned streamer said during its virtual session at the Television Critics Association press tour it has put a docu-comedy series from “Mr. Show” duo Bob Odenkirk and David Cross in the works.
The “Urban Cowboy” project comes after Paramount Television Studios first set up development on a TV series based on the film of the same name at Fox in 2015, which was later scrapped. The Paramount Plus version of the show, based on the John Travolta-Debra Winger movie, goes deeper into Bud’s journey from farm to the big city in 1980s Houston and will feature iconic music from that era. James Pondsolt is directing and co-writing with Benjamin Percy.

HBO and HBO Max will be home to new original films, highly anticipated streaming debuts of new releases, and the finales of three popular series throughout February. Below, we’ve assembled a complete list of everything new on HBO and HBO Max in February 2022, and it includes a new thriller from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Zoe Kravitz called “Kimi.” The original feature takes place in a Covid-19 pandemic Seattle and follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers violent crimes have occurred in a data stream. The Max Original film premieres on Feb. 10.
Also coming in February is the “Raised by Wolves” Season 2 premiere on Feb. 3, with new episodes released weekly, as well as the season premiere of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on Feb. 20. And coming to a close in February are the original series “Euphoria,” “And Just Like That…” and “Peacemaker,” which all air finales this month.

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

Since the SAG Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Actress in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination. According to Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions for Film Actress, the five nominees will be Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”) and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”).
Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana in “Spencer” comes in first place with 71/20 odds. This would be the first individual SAG Awards nomination for Stewart and her second overall following a Film Ensemble bid for 2007’s “Into the Wild.” In “Spencer,” Stewart portrays the Princess of Wales as she grapples with mental health issues and decides to end her decade-long marriage to Prince Charles.

Perfect timing or just in the, uh, nick of time? After weeks of zero movement, the Best Actress Oscar top five has been crashed by none other than Nicole Kidman. Since “Being the Ricardos” started screening two weeks ago, Kidman has cut her deficit in half, rising from eighth place to fourth in the overall odds.
The Oscar winner sits behind Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), who’s holding steady in first, Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) in second, and No. 3 Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), who collected her first win of the season at the Gotham Awards on Monday. Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) trails her in fifth place. Of note, though, is that Kidman has the second highest amount of Experts picking her to win, with four to Stewart’s 12. Colman has three, while Chastain and Cruz have two each.

After revisiting a slice of 1960s history in last year’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Aaron Sorkin turned his lens to “Being the Ricardos,” cataloging a politically tumultuous week in the 1950s for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz during the heyday of “I Love Lucy.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences often falls hard for movies about old Hollywood, and it would be foolish to think that they’ve changed their tune, especially after seeing films such as “Mank” from David Fincher garner the most nominations in the 2020 Oscar race. The new movie from Amazon Studios could follow a similar trajectory — competing in categories across the board.
Under Sorkin’s direction, “Being the Ricardos” presents plenty of chuckles and sympathy for our favorite redhead in TV history. Kidman embodies the essence of Ball, especially in her mannerisms during the rehearsals and filming of episodes. She very well may break your heart,...

Michaela Coel is best known as a creator of great art, with “I May Destroy You” and “Chewing Gum,” but she’s also a consumer. And her taste in movies, television, podcasts and books is as varied in tone as that of her work. Over the last year, Coel dove into heady podcasts and books, but she also made time for Netflix’s zany musical comedy “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.”
“I actually was crying my eyes out watching. It’s that moment when [Rachel McAdams] begins to sing in Icelandic, I cried. I’m so pathetic,” she laughs. “We’re all rooting for the little guy, aren’t we? It’s emotional.”

I’ve known author Matt Serafini for well over a decade now, and it’s been fun to watch his career evolve as he blazed his path as a writer in the world of horror fiction. Serafini’s first novel, the werewolf-centered Feral, was published back in 2012, and since then, he’s published a handful of other projects, including Under the Blade, Ocean Grave, Rites of Extinction, Island Red and Devil’s Row (Feral #2).
And since we’re celebrating authors all this week for Indie Horror Month, I thought this would be the perfect time to catch up Serafini to talk about the evolution of his writing career, the inspirations behind a few of his different novels, his love of slashers, and more.
Can you start by talking about the transition of writing about film online and in various magazines to embarking on a career as a horror fiction writer?...

“Joe Exotic,” the upcoming limited series adaptation of the Wondery Podcast that also inspired the Netflix reality hit “Tiger King,” has added an exciting new face to its cast. Indie filmmaker and actor John Cameron Mitchell has been added to the cast as the larger-than-life Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel, better known by fans simply as Joe Exotic. Mitchell joins the previously announced Kate McKinnon, who will be playing Schreibvogel’s rival Carole Baskin. The NBCUniversal Television series will air across NBC, Peacock, and USA Network, as also previously announced.
“I’m thrilled to take on the role of this modern folk antihero,” said Mitchell in a statement. “Joe and I are the same age and like him, I grew up queer in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas so I feel like I know a little bit about this guy and his desperate attempt to conquer an inhospitable world.” Variety first reported the news.

With victories for “The Piano Lesson” in 1996 and “Miss Evers’ Boys” in 1998, Alfre Woodard became the first double winner of the best TV movie/limited series actress prize at the SAG Awards. Only two actresses (Helen Mirren and Queen Latifah) have matched her feat since, and now Nicole Kidman (“The Undoing”) is looking to join the club.
Kidman faces off against Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) and Kerry Washington (“Little Fires Everywhere”). Kidman previously won this award for “Big Little Lies” in 2018. Coel and Taylor-Joy are SAG newcomers, while Blanchett has earned three wins for feature film performances. Carey Mulligan is emerging as a possible favorite to win her first Oscar for “Promising Young Woman.” She has already scored Best Actress bids from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, so she is well on her way to nabbing her second Oscar nomination in March. Mulligan was first nominated at the Academy Awards in 2010 at the age of 24 for “An Education,” a huge breakthrough for the actress that led to numerous starring roles over the last decade. Now back in major awards contention again, Mulligan might have a path to victory along the lines of another actress that voters discovered at a young age: Natalie Portman.

Switzerland’s Tristan Aymon, director of short film “Black Hole” (“Trou Noir”), the only title to win two prizes at the 2020 Locarno Festival – a Pardino d’Argento in Swiss Competition and a Youth Jury best Swiss short – is preparing “Skate,” his feature debut.
Written by Aymon and Marianne Brun, his co-screenwriter on “Black Hole,” “Skate” will tap into the same context, themes and, above all, emotions of “Black Hole,” a low key and laid-back but resonant, semi-autobiographical evocation of a close-knit gang of teen skateboard enthusiasts, whether skating, lazing by the local lake, driving around country roads in a Vitara convertible, or sharing a joint at a party.
The tone darkens when one of the gang, Vincent, the film’s protagonist, learns he is being sent abroad to study; he may be leaving the valley for ever.

Locarno Film Festival’s decision this year to pull its traditional completed feature film sections — with its top Golden Leopard prizes — has thrust into the limelight its short film lineup, Pardi di Domani (Leopards of Tomorrow). This year’s contest certainly lives up to its name — with many filmmakers already delivering titles that feel like short feature films.
“Several themes stand out, such as issues of family ties, friendships, while some films underpin more political and topical issues,” says Charlotte Corchète, head of the selection committee.
Selected from the 43-title lineup, here are some of the films worth catching.

The most buzzed of Swiss shorts, capturing Vincent and his teen friends during a long summer in his home Swiss valley, skateboarding, lazing by the lake, driving around in Vitara convertible or sharing a joint. For Vincent, however, this summer will be his last: He’ll soon leave to study abroad.
“Several themes stand out, such as issues of family ties, friendships, while some films underpin more political and topical issues,” says Charlotte Corchète, head of the selection committee.
Selected from the 43-title lineup, here are some of the films worth catching.

It’s a brand new month, and though it might seem like all hope is lost for 2020, at least streaming services have kept us occupied with plenty of stuff to watch. And like most platforms, Amazon Prime is dropping a ton of new movies on day one of July so that you can fill up your list and stay glued to your television. Not every flick releasing today is a winner, but you’re likely to find at least a handful of things you’re going to be dying to see.
For starters, Buried is an underrated Ryan Reynolds thriller launching on the service today, and if you can manage to sit through an hour and a half of a film that takes place entirely within a coffin, you’ll find a hell of a riveting experience. This extraordinarily tense pic tells the story of an American civilian truck driver...

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.
