Really a shame no one sponsored this film
mr-cooljoefeatncf16 September 2017
This is a self funded, incredibly short, animated film by Hiroshi Harada. Knowing that this movie was completely self funded and self animated going in would have gave me a greater appreciation for it while watching it. The animation is incredibly choppy, and a lot of the voice acting isn't very good, but this is a movie that was basically created by one man. Given these circumstances, it turned out incredibly well. It is beautifully drawn, and its surreal atmosphere kept me engaged. Its an interesting story that could really be great if it was given an actual budget and a team of animators. But nobody funded it due to its graphic nature, and that really sucks, because it would have been really good. Even Harada's independent version got censored due to graphic depictions of child rape, and that's a shame too, he put effort in to it and that effort should be seen. Its not as though it presented the rape in a pornographic fashion. There's numerous goro manga's getting released, most of them presented as erotic, but this gets cut when it actually wants to show this material for what it should be shown as, horror. This is something with great potential that was overlooked due to its content, it could have had fleshed out characters, beautiful animation, a compelling story and a great message, but nearly all of that was lost due to the constraint of one man working on it. All of this aside, if its taken as it is, without consideration of the circumstances of its creation, its a decent little animated film with some memorable imagery, a surreal atmosphere, and cool music.

Admire the art a lot but very very disturbing *watch without having food and not too late like I did*
Irishchatter21 April 2019
So I decided to watch this as a stupid human being at 3am in the morning because it was considered as one of the messed up animes out there and boy, they are not wrong thanks to my curiosity. There is a lot of severe rape, child slavery, disability shaming, revenge killing, animal killing, you name it!

I strongly advise you to avoid this if you are sensitive on the topics I just mentioned there, especially if you are an animal lover. I'm not gonna say what was killed because it was very upsetting since they were only babies. I honestly had to block the scene with my hand until they were done and like the cries man, omg I should've turned the volume down urghhhhhh.....

Im giving it a 7/10 since the art was very well done, the Japanese voice actors were very good but it got rid of a star because the ending was rather abrupt and not clear on what happened next to the little girl. I honestly would love to see a happy ending like anyone would but I just didnt know what the hell was going on at the end. ._.

Luckily I got a good sleep afterwards but it is god wrenching to say the least.....

Crazy movie with an interesting story of what happened backstage
euroasiangenetic7 December 2020
This is a movie not suitable for food digestion, a lot of bizarre and disturbing scenes and really crazy , I can't even begin to describe the images.

Midori finds her mother dead, now as an orphan she must find a new home, she gets invited by a nice gentleman, only to realize that she's been duped by the gentleman who is a businessman and the his crew of bunch of deformed circus performances, despite their handicaps they bully and sexual harass poor Midori, Midori is literally in the circus of hell.

Also the movie has a lot of gore and animal kills that is uncomfortable to watch, but the most interesting about the movie is actually the story behind it, Hiroshi Harada, who is the director of the film couldn't get any company to work on this script and he got amateur voice actors in the movie, and the animation was made by himself, he even put his life savings just so he could release the move.

However the Japanese people didn't like the idea of the movie, as a matter of fact, some people went into his house and stole some footage and destroyed some scenes, and therefore Harada had to replace some scenes with photos and shortened the movie than expected.

Anyhow I give this movie 6/10 because I am a sucker for a hard work project but I must warn some sensitive viewers that this might too much disturbing scenes, you have been warned.

And I might add that the story had me interest though so it was worth my time.

One of the things that most people comment on when reading on Midori is that it was actually banned originally for depicting graphic violence to animals. Now, what is on display here is rather shocking but certainly not enough to be considered obscene, especially considering the psychopathic nature of the character which performs the act. If anything, the act featured is only detrimental to children and as anyone with a brain has figured out, this isn't for children at all.

Personally, I was quite surprised by Midori. It was mostly animated and directed by the one man and it shows: mouths don't move often, backgrounds suddenly disappear, zooming in of a single picture is common etc. If anything, these shortcuts only add to the charm of the movie and how intricately personal it is to it's creator. There was apparently 5000 paintings handpainted by Hiroshi Harada to complete the film over a course of 5 years. It was also funded by Hiroshi's life savings; if that's not dedication to a piece of art then I don't know what is.

So the animation is charming, the characters are gut wrenching and the script is full of profound reflections. Another point is the music; most of the soundtrack is created by a keyboard and the dark melancholy keyboard noodlings really add to the circus freakshow setting in the movie.

This is a very dark and unsettling anime movie, so it's only best to watch this if you're looking for something that's profound and will make you think. It will hurt you emotionally and upset you but it will stick in your mind for days on end.

Fine for those who love horror at its extreme.
Morgan_MLX4 July 2019
I loved the art style used though the content was a bit depressing. But I've got to admit that this work is a masterpiece in its own ways given that the director/animator, Hiroshi Harada had to work on it for five years and alone. I am happy I learned something from it, that we can find solace even in a place similar to hell.

Impossible to categorize well of perverse riches
fertilecelluloid30 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Director/animator Hiroshi Harada originally toured this amazing work across Japan with real freak shows and exhibitions of deformities. Until very recently, it was not available on VHS or DVD anywhere in the world. As a devotee of the grotesque and the grotesquely beautiful, I was so excited to see Harada's filmization of Suehiro Maruo's "Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show", one of the strongest ero-gro mangas ever conceived. After young Midori loses her parents, she takes refuge in a freak show with living mummies, human torsos, and sexual degenerates. She is beaten, raped, and exposed to hideous displays of exhibitionism and cruelty. Her savior is Mr. Arashi, a dwarf who imprisons himself in bottles and escapes confinement like a vapor. Arashi proposes to Midori and offers her protection from the freaks who have been using her as their domestic slave and sexual plaything. Harada spent five years completing every drawing himself for what would ultimately make up this fifty-two minute labor of love. The animation is limited in terms of movement, but it is an entirely original interpretation of Maruo's sizzling source material. The content is graphic in parts as it features animal mutilation, underage sex, gory dismemberment, and gloriously lurid imagery of freaks and deformed humans. Ultimately, this is art that finds humanity in degradation and love in malice. The music is amazing and Harada's drawings possess a raw finish that contributes to the feeling that we are witnessing a tale growing organically from the film frame. "Midori" is not hentai and it's not traditional manga, it's totally unique and, for those who appreciate ventures into the psyche's darkest passages, it is a well of perverse riches.

Surprisingly Tasteful
Lockout_Salties25 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Midori: Shojo tsubaki is widely considered to be the scariest anime of all time, and one of the most disturbing j-horror movies as well. My curiosity piqued: how bad could an anime get?

In case the film is actually horrifying, I've decided to do something I've never done before: take notes whilst watching the moviem and publish the notes as a review. I'm currently writing this before seeing the movie to give context to the notes to follow. Without further ado, here are my notes.

-Already it starts with super disturbing imagery... I'm scared.

-Title cards? Okay...

-Mother's death is... really messed up, but not THAT disturbing.

-song number one?!

-Run for it girl!!

-Awww the puppies are adorable!

-Bad stuff happened to the puppies... I don't want to go into it.

-There's literally zero attempt at lip syncing. Their mouths are completely static and unmoving.

-Horrible things are happening to the main character, who is a little girl. It isn't pleasant.

-Of course the trans character is a horrible person. Why am I not surprised...

-Is the plot gonna start soon?

-I have no words for the dream sequence. No words.

-We're on song number two now.

-The little girl's hands are the size of a grown man's.

-Not again... stop taking advantage of the fact that your little girl is animated and not real...

-Why is this illegal and disgusting romance portrayed positively?! Or is it supposed to be messed up?!

-It's just turned from a disturbing horror movie into an anime romance.

-Is this gonna stay like this? Because it was way more interesting as a horror movie.

-Back to horror movie now.

-It's gotten significantly less disturbing now, and it's turned more into a dark fantasy drama.

-Spoke too soon... now we've hone into exploding humans. Yay.

-To this movie's credit, the animation is really well-done in the disturbing scenes.

-We're on the final song now, folks. Brace for impact.

-Really stylized fantasy sequence. It's done in a very minimalistic way, but it works to the film's advantage.

-Human slug>human centipede

-She's left the circus, but there's still eight minutes left. I'm not gonna lie, I want to know what happens next.

-Get them girl!

-And our protagonist was sucked into an infinite white void.

-The end.

To be honest, Shojo Tsubaki was less intense than I initially thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, there were some parts that were disturbing, but it was way more focused on characters than reviews had led me to believe. The animations was pretty choppy most of the time, but it got way better in the disturbing parts. The magician's revenge scene, in particular, was very disturbing.

This films could have been a lot more exploitative than it was. I'm glad the scenes of sexual assault weren't depicted in detail, and whilst the animal violence was pretty horrific, the scenes in question only lasted a few seconds each. Even when the magician disfigured a bunch of people, it was made clear afterwards that everyone was turned back to normal.

Overall, Midori: Shojo Tsubaki is not perfect, but is a somehwat interesting ride. The plot is inconsistent and unfocused, and the thematic content within the movie seems thin at best. However, the medium of the film really works for it, taking away a lot of the Ick factor that would be present if it was live-action. It makes the film weirdly tasteful, especially compared to the likes of Antropophagus and other such movies. If you want a straightforward anime that's fun for the whole family, look elsewhere. But if you want a disturbing movie that has a surprising amount of characterization (and perhaps some deep themes if you're willing to look hard enough), then check out Shojo Tsubaki.

Final Score: 57/100.

Confusing and Distasteful
SherlyCat2524 May 2021
I want to start off by saying I respect the hustle of the director being that he single handedly composed, drew, and animated this film over a course of five long years. It also apparently took over 5,000 individual sheets of paper to complete and that's no easy feat. However, this film was extremely difficult to follow. Was there a story? Yes. Could I tell you what happens in the end? Nope. It's a roller coaster of confusion and gore without real meaning. I honestly don't know how there are people giving this film such high ratings, they must be able to appreciate something in it that I cannot.

Interesting And Twisted Manga-Style Animated Film...
EVOL66630 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
MIDORI is one of the few films I've watched recently that really blew me away. An interesting and original film in every way, this one had everything that a lover of "subversive" films could want - gore, perversion, bizarre sex, and a strong storyline all rolled into one film.

Midori's father and mother die, and she is taken into a traveling carnival where she is abused (both physically and mentally) by the carnival's freakish employees. A famous magician joins the troupe, and this fellow takes a liking to Midori and begins to court her. His status as a powerful magician and his earning potential for the carnival buys Midori a bit of leniency from the other freaks, but we eventually find that the relationship between Midori and the magician is not as "innocent" as was previously thought, when the magician becomes jealous of anyone who stands between him and his love...

Personally, I found MIDORI to be near-perfect in every way - from the simplistic, almost "childish" animation style, to the bizarre and often perverse subject-matter. As one reviewer rightly noted - MIDORI plays out very much like a twisted Cinderella tale - minus any sort of happy-ending. I've purposely left out any details of the more "graphic" and interesting points in the film, as to allude to too much would very possibly spoil the experience for the viewer. Luckily, I knew absolutely nothing about MIDORI going into it - was handed it by a friend who basically just said "watch it - you'll like it" - and I have to say that that is quite an understatement. A strange, eerie, interesting film that should definitely be sought out by fans of adult-themed manga, anime, and exploit film lovers alike. By far one of the most interesting and unique films I've seen in quite a while - definitely recommended...9/10

Brutal, Horrific, and a work of art
tonypellock3 February 2021
There isn't much to be said about Midori that hasn't already been said about it. We know what happens in this film. Sure, there isn't a sea of blood, and the Kill count is low so the surface level gore hounds will scoff, but that's not why this film is disturbing. Midori's reputation comes from its completely un-restrained misanthropy. This film will make you loathe your humanity. It takes real life horror and does what anime on celluloid does best, elevates it and shoves it right in your face. You can hate it and turn your face away from it but these things ARE real. They exist in humanity. I'm glad this never was funded and that it was made the way it was. It's brutal and the low budget makes it feel personal Like Harada would stab you with his paint brush if he could. For 90s anime and it being of the horror genre It's about as challenging of a thing an artist can make and it is Art for better or worse. Take it or leave it.

Ufff, be careful this is not for everyone.
rodrigofv13 June 2020
Extremely crude and sad. Some people say this is art and a cult anime, not really sure.

This is a Chinese legend brought up to animation. Low budget animation, but so crude and evil story there is room to think if mankind evilness should be recreated this way or even seen again.

Be aware.

This movie deserves better than this
ilispa3 March 2020
Everyone judges this movie by being gore, horrifying and scary, but they don't realize that that's exactly the point of it. The movie isn't bad, it's incredibly well done (considering also the fact that Hiroshi Harada spend five years to make it), and if you're going to rate this movie, rate it for what it is, not what you think it's supposed to be.

a fantastically grotesque masterpiece
zeppelinzoso1 October 2018
It's quite funny that people think they need to be "gore experts" or whatever to enjoy this movie, and that some are even disappointed at the lack of gore. If you simply look for gore in movies, anime, etc, I don't know what to tell you. To only look at Shoujo Tsubaki for it's gore is appalling anyway. This deserves SO much more. It's a brilliant masterpiece in the medium of animation as a whole. It stands among some of the most breathtaking animated shots to ever be put to film. It sickens me that so much of this beautiful film is lost forever because some fools who love censorship found some of it to be too revolting, and because of their actions, we'll never have the complete film. It is lost to history forever. Luckily what we have tells the story pretty well anyway, and I believe the missing scenes aren't entirely plot heavy. regardless, please check out this film. only a complete philistine would look at this movie and call it anything less than an artistic marvel. To say that this movie isn't at least artistically brilliant is a joke.

deverichmarissa10 March 2021
I watched Midori on YouTube because I heard it was the most disturbing anime so I watched it and I wanna smack myself for watching it because it was disgusting and nothing was good about it but the art was pretty neat and well but everything else was so sick and cruel this anime shouldn't exist and it's only for people who want horror at its extreme or has a strong stomach to watch it definitely DO NOT watch this if you hate gore or have a weak stomach this anime even has anime cruelty!!!! I know the guy who made it did it all by himself but I don't know why the heck did he make this! It's disturbing rather than disturbing and it should be the most DISGUSTING anime of all time none of the scenes were good the characters stink all of it stinks only watch if you want horror at its extreme but I do not recommend this at all 0/10🤢🤢🤢

It's sad that no one wanted to support the making of this film, yet Hiroshi didn't give up and spent five years of his life making this film. It's interesting to see how something so horrifying and scary can be beautiful.

Midori dont watch it if you have a weak stomach but it is good becuse of.
lokepersson_pihlajainen29 November 2023
Unique Art Style: The film has a distinctive and unconventional art style, which includes a mix of live-action and animation. This artistic approach contributes to the overall surreal and nightmarish atmosphere of the story.

Dark and Disturbing Themes: "Midori" explores dark and unsettling themes, including the harsh realities of life, exploitation, and the loss of innocence. The narrative doesn't shy away from portraying the darker aspects of human nature.

It's worth noting that "Midori" is not for everyone due to its graphic content and unsettling themes. Viewer discretion is advised, and it may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to disturbing or explicit content. If you are interested in unconventional and avant-garde anime with a focus on psychological horror, "Midori" might be worth exploring. However, it's essential to approach it with an awareness of its mature and challenging content.

Weird body horror fever dream
peeps_ahoy26 July 2021
This movie actually has most of its disturbing stuff early on. And yeah, it's not for the faint of heart or people who struggle with trauma.

It definitely depicts some child sexual abuse, as well as graphic animal killing, as is known about it.

I watched this because it was listed as a disturbing movie, and honestly it didn't phase me. The plot never stays coherent for long, and some of the body horror imagery looks silly instead of scary. The animation quality differs wildly, but tends to be shoddy at best. Honestly it kind of bored me. I had heard this was intense and disturbing, but I can't really agree with that. Maybe if it had a longer runtime and we were able to get attached to anything before things immediately happen, but it's honestly just WEIRD. It's really weird. It feels very experimental.

I'm not hating over the controversial content. The opposite actually. I was bored. I will say I liked Midori's facial expressions and her face reminded me a lot of Junji Ito's style. But Ito's works are far more terrifying imo and have better body horror.

I wish I could understand the praise. Though the dedication of its creator is amazing no matter how you feel about this 47-minute long animation.

Cinderella with perverse sex
McQualude23 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The perversity and gore of this animated work by Hiroshi Harada has been a bit overblown. Sure it's a matter of experience, shown to a mainstream audience it would hold some shockers but to a veteran of horror the crudely drawn pictures of a nude female child, weird adult sex and minor gore don't really justify the reputation this work has developed. To be honest, somewhere around 30 minutes into the movie I started having trouble following the plot, maybe it loses something in the cultural translation or perhaps it was just me losing interest in the film. The basic story is this... a young girl loses her father then mother and out of desperation joins a carnival where she is a abused sexually, physically and mentally. The first half of the story is basically Cinderella with perverse sex. Eventually Midori meets her Prince Charming, known only as Master, who it turns out, has a dark side. Midori's choice to get married is fateful in another way, that it destroys her one chance to forever escape the carnival when she is asked to star in a motion picture but her husband refuses to allow it. Realizing that again, Master is Midori's only chance at happiness she eventually forgives him and clings to him as he takes her away from the carnival. But in the end, tragedy strikes and apparently Midori spirals into madness. In the end you can take what message you want from the movie but it's a basic story about the choices available and the choices we make. I liked the story in that it didn't have a sappy and unrealistic happy ending.

Midori is considered one of the most shocking movies out there It is even blocked in some countries but I think Midori is a sad and exciting film

THE PLOT: The plot revolves around a young girl named Midori, who lives a difficult life as a circus performer. After her mother's death, Midori is left alone and is taken in by a cruel and abusive circus troupe. She endures physical and emotional abuse from the troupe's members, including the sadistic ringmaster Despite her circumstances, Midori befriends a kind-hearted dwarf named Wonder Masamitsu, who becomes a source of comfort and support for her. Together, they form a bond and navigate the oppressive and dark world of the circus

THE SCENES:There are very shocking scenes, killing dogs, rape and more these scenes show us how Midori's dark side is cruel

Moral:The movie Midori is undoubtedly shocking, but it has a great meaning. The movie comes to show us what abuse looks like, how Midori must do all the things and how she copes. I think Midori is very violent, but it comes to show us what abuse looks like
