- Sixteen people hoping to become contestants are told that for the final stage of their audition, they will be sent to one of four cities and set the challenge of arriving at a hotel in central Melbourne by a set time, travelling there by at least five different methods of transportation on a budget of A$500. After they arrive, they take part in a multiple-choice computer quiz about their fellow contestant hopefuls, from which the six lowest scoring people are eliminated. The other ten then fly to a naval training facility where they have to complete an obstacle course.—Allister Coots
- As sixteen people hoping to become contestants prepared for their first assignment, the person revealed as the Mole in the last season, Alan, gave a word of advice to any potential Mole spotters among the audience - when they are searching for who they think is the Mole, they shouldn't just look at the things that the Mole says or does, but also look at the things that the Mole doesn't say or do.
The sixteen contestant hopefuls were given word that they had made it to the final step of their audition process, and are sent to one of four cities - Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra or Hobart. There, they each met three other people who were also hoping to be contestants, and the four quartets were given the instructions for their assignment - they had to make it to a hotel located in central Melbourne by 4:00PM Australian Eastern time, using only their allocated budget of A$500 to travel by at least five methods of transportation, with each method having to take them a minimum of 1 kilometre. If any of the quartets breached any of these rules or failed to make it to the hotel in time, everyone in that quartet would immediately be eliminated. Along the way, each quartet received twelve dossier cards with information about the people in the other three quartets. To find out similar information about the people in their own quartet, they needed to ask those people.
Between the quartets, a number of different forms of transport were taken, among them flights, taxis, buses, trams and a horse and cart. All four groups of contestant hopefuls made it to the hotel on time without breaching any of the rules, so after the last quartet had arrived, they all faced a multiple-choice computer quiz that asked questions about all sixteen people. The contestant hopefuls that scored in the top ten on the quiz would qualify for the main game.
Once everyone had completed the quiz, and the results were known, the contestant hopefuls met host Grant Bowler at an aircraft hangar. There, Grant told them that he would type their names one by one into the computer, and if the screen turned green after a person's name was entered, then that person had advanced to the main game and had to board a helicopter that would fly them to the game's first assignment, but if the screen turned red, they were eliminated. One of the players was more at ease than the others because their place in the main game was secured - that person was the Mole. John, Emily, Mal, Shane, Michael Laffy, Angela, Brooke, Helen, Hal and Fiona scored enough on the quiz to make it into the main game, while Chris, Mike, Terri , Michael Brown, Natalie and Jessica were eliminated.
Grant then joined the ten contestants on the helicopter, which flew them to HMAS Cerberus, the primary training establishment of the Royal Australian Navy. There, they had to complete an assault course used for naval training. The course consisted of nine obstacles, and a fit person would normally take 20 minutes to complete it. If the group completed the course in less than 40 minutes, they would win A$10,000 for the kitty. If they refused or failed any of the obstacles, they would receive a two minute penalty. Although the group inadvertently ran around one obstacle and had to double back to negotiate it, they still completed the course in time and won the money.
