When Bullwinkle J. Moose brags about . . .

. . .having just made a batch of "chocolate cherry pan-dowdy," it struck a chord on the keyboard of my memory bank from something I learned a while ago in Home Economics 202: Lazy Desserts. It seems that pan-dowdy's in general and chocolate ones in particular are old-fashioned after-dinner treats concocted by slothful Canadian cooks as a sweet easier to make than pie. If I'm not mistaken, the crust of a pan-dowdy requires two cups of flour minus a tablespoon, three tablespoons of cocoa powder, three tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of regular sugar, half a teaspoon of kosher salt, 1/3 cup of unsalted butter chilled and cubed, 1/3 cup of shortening chilled and cubed, one large egg, one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, 1/4 cup ice water, one tablespoon of cream and one tablespoon of tornado sugar. Let the latter whip the other ingredients together in a whirlwind, and then pour in the cherry filling. Presto! You're done.

To quote Rocket J. Squirrel . . .

" . . . Now for our moment of Culture." As always, the Bullwinkle's Corner portion of Rocky & Bullwinkle, Episode #4, is the highlight of these 22 minutes plus. America's Favorite Moose recites a beloved poem by Robert Louis Stevenson--doubtless far more popular then and now than Bob's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. "Dark brown is the river, golden is the sand" begins this heroic ode, required to be delivered from memory--and with feeling--by every graduate of the public school district in South Bend, IN. Who will ever forget such turns of phrase as "Castles of the Foam" and "Away down the hill"? Or Bob's final promise that "Other little children shall bring my boats ashore."

Rocky Goes to Sea in a Balloon
Hitchcoc4 November 2014
Rocky and Bullwinkle find themselves in a house on the seashore. Rocky has been sent up in a balloon by Boris and Natasha and must fight his way back through army fire. Meanwhile the effort goes on to bake the exploding cake. Gidney and Cloyd are tricked into thinking a birthday party is being held for them. The beat goes on. The Fractured Fairy Tale involves a lame version of Goldilocks. She is indeed a selfish little girl. Peabody and Sherman visit Wyatt Earp who has ruined his gun with too many notches and decides to confront the bad guy with a sword, a "Go Fish" game or, of course, Tiddley Winks. It's just not a very interesting offering.
