A View from the Chair
Prismark102 October 2021
Another episode where David Main shows his caring side. He commands a reluctant Peter Findon to take a woman on legal aid who is in financial problems after her husband abandoned the family.

Even investigator Sidney Bulmer tires of Findon's uncaring attitude. No surprise that this part of the story will be heading towards tragedy.

This story also introduces Main's father. Edward Main also a solicitor has had a troubled legal career.

He now works in house for a supermarket mogul Joseph Elvin. The type of northerner who is a self made man. Elvin also takes a zero tolerance policy towards shoplifters.

David Main dislikes his father but is requested to meet him. David is shocked to learn that both Elvin and his father use illegal methods when detaining suspects. Fingerprinting suspects, using favoured police officers to take them away, even the witness statements from supermarket workers are dodgy.

Edward Main is being targeted by a defence lawyer who believes that the Law Society needs to look at his methods. Even the police take an interest when a shoplifting case collapses.

It is nice to see an episode where it is not all high powered city deals. I could not help wondering if Elvin might have been based on Sir Ken Morrison. After all this show was made by Yorkshire Television.
