Decent execution of the famous story once again Warning: Spoilers
"The Three Wise Men" is an American animated short film from 2020, actually made for the holiday season in 2020, so this one is not even a year old. No surprise given the occasion either that this is of course about the Three Kings. But let's focus on the basics first. Writers and directors are spouses are Carrie and Yarrow Cheney, most likely not related to Dick, and these two have been in the industry for a long time and also started working together a long time ago as they were study buddies initially apparently. Carrie has not been super prolific, but Yarrow has worked on some really successful high-profile Hollywood animated films in the past, sometimes as the one in charge behind the camera. Or one of the men in charge. This includes The Grinch and The Secret Life of Pets, but also, when not in charge, Despicable Me 2 for example. His biggest success as well as his wife's happened over 20 years ago already when they won a Primetime Emmy for Dilbert, a show that not too many remember today I guess. Their work here also has connections to the past because this is basically the exact same movie they released back in 2006 as "The Very First Noel". The only change is that apparently a new song was added for the closing credits and the performer there is Jonas Myrin. Doesn't make an impact at all for me to be honest. Sounded like utterly generic pop music and I definitely prefer the music from the Brothers Cazimero early on. All their songs basically, but most of all "Angels we have heard on high". Their voices work very well with the overall tone of this little film.

It runs for under 27 minutes by the way and that already includes over 10% closing credits. So, to be honest, you could go for the version from almost 15 years earlier without that forgettable song in the end. As for the animation, some of it I like, other stuff not so much. Taking into account that this is not from 2020 in terms of looks, it's alright. To be honest, I would have liked the key character here, one of the Three Kings, look a little better. The "non-royal" characters also did not do too much for me in terms of what they looked like. But I did like the King who had this yellow dress. Not just his looks, but also his behavior, like when he thinks something alonge the lines of "what a sissy" when the third King tells someting about a pretty town. That was funny for sure. Story-wise, it was decent too. The Caesar inclusion seemed a bit random and also the king (not one of the three) who was the closest to an antagonist here could have been used better. But after being told by the narrator that he is evil, that is all we get basically and he does not do anything in the end which you could think he would with how he is presented to us on the conniving side. But the story is the story I guess.

Finally, I must certainly also mention the narrator here. That would be Andy Griffith, known to most from the successful series Matlock. He is doing a fine job and he was sadly also not alive anymore last year, which further adds to this not being a 2020 film in fact. I still cannot be as enthusiastic as the other reviewer here who made it sound as if this is the best film ever made. Come on. Probably a slightly better watch in December than in May, but I ennjoyed it nonetheless today. Those parts when they were walking through all these different geological landscapes was kinda memorable too. I give the outcome here without much hesitation a thumbs-up, even if I think there was no necessaity to really "remake" this with this weak song in the end, but if it helps in getting people to watch it, people who would not have watched otherwise, then I'm perfectly fine. Could have needed more animals though as a whole. But yeah, I also think it's good that this is a religious story that in no way feels as if it pushes an agenda onto viewers. Maybe the best thing about it all to show us that neither Bible nor Church are evil at its most essential. Thanks to the Cheneys for making this. Go see it!

Enchanting view of a familiar tale
theherings6 December 2007
We all know the story-- no spoiler warning needed here. What a great animated short film-- the music is captivating and the rhyme reminds me of Twas the Night Before Christmas. Andy Griffith is a great choice for narrator. My daughter loves it and that's probably the best predictor of a movie's popularity in our house. She loves to play with her toys and then take a 23 minute break and watch this movie. The film is honest, funny, and purely enjoyable. What a great way to introduce my children to the birth of Christ. My only gripe is that I wish it was longer. I hoped it would be more of a feature film length than merely 23 minutes.

Awesome movie
JagersMom2 December 2008
I just got this movie because the cover looked cute. My son, husband, and I watched it and fell in love. It is short and straight to the point. My son did not lose interest at all, in fact we had to watch it several more times. Truthfully, this might be the best animated Christmas film we've ever seen. And it doesn't hurt that the score was done by the amazing Brothers Cazimero. Robert and Roland Cazimero are well known Hawaiian entertainers, in Hawaii at least. Robert has the voice of an angel. I recommend this movie to all ages. It has awesome graphics, beautiful music and is the greatest story ever told. And Andy Griffith fit so well as the narrator because he has such a calming voice.

The best movie ever made!
f-5613415 December 2020
This is the best movie ever made! I loved the animation, the circular motion of Mary's pregnant baby bump, I especially loved the versions of "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/Joy to the World" by The Brothers Cazimero. I knew this movie from my youth because I saw the trailer of it but never actually seen the movie. When I watched it, I absolutely loved it! This is my all-time favorite Christmas movie. Catherine Gilbert was beautiful as the Virgin Mary and I loved Andy Griffith's voice as Melchior. You should definitely watch this! It's a really cute, beautiful, and amazing film! It explains the true meaning of Christmas and came from the creator of The Secret Life of Pets and Dr. Seuss' The Grinch. The best movie ever! Thank you, Andy Griffith!

Full plate.

I watched this with my young kids and I thought it was beautifully executed. Great writing, great compositions, great color, great acting, good voices... splendid. Most remarkably, the range of ages who enjoyed it were from three to eight! How often does THAT happen? I will buy this for sure. Sonny Jim Bottomly, I have seen mediocre children's fair and I've even had to work on some, and this is not mediocre at all. When our recording of it from the broadcast was lost with a new audio/video installation I was actually sad about it. Now who says this is not great, huh? Let them produce even a shadow of this quality for the same budget and I will eat my robe! Oh yeah, if you don't have kids, don'y bother commenting on this one... even if you're just an overgrown kid.

Wise men's journey
GMGoodwrenchGirl30 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I bought this DVD because of the great reviews I read on various sites. It also caught my eye because the graphics make for just about the cutest characters I have ever seen. I found myself making comparisons to Fisher-Price Little People a lot. I grew up with the Rankin-Bass stop-motion animated specials, so I have a big appreciation for a well-done holiday show, even when the stop-motion has been replaced with CGI. Good is good.

I'm not a traditionally religious person, and I don't have kids...I watched this because I enjoy the medium of animation. The music is not what you would traditionally expect, but I found it really enhanced the story and was very uplifting and happy.

So, your narrator is Andy Griffith. The show opens with him (as Melchior) seeing a very bright star while researching the skies. He seems to recall a prophecy associated with just such a thing, and next thing you know, he's on his way to find this new king. He runs into Balthazar and Caspar (or Gaspar...whichever you prefer) along the way and they become traveling companions. Meanwhile, Mary and Joseph are given an angelic "heads-up" about what God has in store for them. Herod hears about this new king coming and orders the census/tax collection in hope of putting a stop to this promised king. Mary and Joseph make their required journey, ending up at the stable where the little king is born. The three wise men make it right on time, having picked the little drummer boy up along the way. The two shepherds with their flock were also in attendance, having earlier been invited by an angel. They had been worried about their shabby appearance, but were assured that this king was not just for rich or poor, but for everyone.

All in all a very sweet story with characters to match. Not a lot of dialogue, but it wasn't needed for the story to be clear.

I'm sure there are those who won't like that this is religious, or those who won't think it is religious enough. To each his own...but I do think it's a really nice story that kids would like. I highly recommend it.

Overall charming and sincere shines through this underrated little show
zoemorn23 December 2023
So this precious little show is the original title of what has been since reissued as "The Three Wise Men" in 2020 and is available on Amazon. Highly encourage purchasing this to support and encourage the creators and current owners ( i have no relationship, just have a lot of love for this little show).

Originally by Exclaim Entertainment, Andy Griffith stars and narrates as one of the wise men.

So what is so great about it? Maybe it looks like a 'too cutesy' or underwhelming kids program. Sure it has a very traditional take on the Nativity story. Sure it has Andy Griffith's warm southern voice that may be 'too southern' for some tastes but is appreciated by others. Just don't let that put you off from the important and subtle details throughout this film.

If your heart and mind is familiar with the Biblical narrative, and familiar with the setting and all that took place in that history, you will find wonderfully sincere nuances throughout the show. And it is all those little details, little precious nods, glances, and moments that make this show worth repeated watches.

The music is fresh even by today's standards. And it is 'fresh' in a good way. The animation is cute, warm and inviting.

I really think it is a film that can touch people, particularly if you already have some inclination and love for the story. If not, what it presents may be lost.
