Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.
Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

He’s the man behind Hereford Films, the production and financing company he runs with partner Damien Morley. If that name rings a bell, it might well be because Morley owns a modelling agency that takes care of most of the Page 3 girls, and the entrepreneur has even recently launched a bid to buy the Page 3 brand off The Sun himself.

From early Bond to 21st century sci-fi, here's Ryan's pick of 11 unforgettable villain pairings from action cinema history...
You're generally lucky if a movie has one genuinely great villain in it, let alone two. This is probably because creating a villain takes great acting and writing - it's one thing to create a preening character who stomps around a story doing unpleasant things, but creating a villain who's three-dimensional, witty, scary and above all memorable requires considerable skill.
Every so often, a movie comes along which gives us not one, but two classic villains, with the personality of one complementing the other. A familiar dynamic was once laid out by Steven Spielberg: one is smart and eloquent , while the other is the tougher, more violent of the pair. It's a template that we've seen time and again in cinema, but it's only occasionally that both characters leap from the screen.

We like to celebrate great actors at Super-8 Movie Madness at The Way Out Club. We’ve had past shows highlighting the careers of Charles Bronson, Boris Karloff, Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Burt Reynolds. On Tuesday, June 3rd, we’re offering a double dose of Actor Madness with Super-8 Robert Redford/Paul Newman Movie Madness!
That’s right, these two Oscar-winners paired up famously in two films: Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and The Sting and we’ll be showing both of those. To highlight Mr. Redford’s solo career we’ll be showing Jeremiah Johnson and The Great Waldo Pepper. And Mr. Newman’s solo career will be represented with The Towering Inferno and Slap Shot.
Movies we’re showing that star neither Mr. Redford nor Mr. Newman are: Revenge Of The Creature, Disney’s Song Of The South, Creature With The Atom Brain,...

They are perhaps the most versatile monster we know. The vampire. Sometimes sexy, sometimes proper, sometimes feral, sometimes classic. The vampire comes in so many different forms.
With the release of Black Water Vampire on DVD and VOD tomorrow, January 21st, we celebrate the Top 11 Most Vicious Vampires.
There are so many to choose from. Vampires have been present in movies and television forever, so picking out the most vicious is no mean feat. We've done our best to narrow it down to the Top 11 but also have our usual honorable mentions to help flesh out the list (pun definitely intended).
We'd like to recognize the infected Alpha male vampire from I Am Legend; that dude was simply badass. In any version of Salem's Lot, be it either of the television mini-series or the book, Kurt Barlow has always been Type 1 brutal. Chris Sarandon's Jerry Dandridge in Fright Night...

"'Even a Man Who is Pure in Heart': Filmic Horror, Popular Religion and the Spectral Underside of History," an essay that appeared in the Journal of Religion and Popular Culture in 2005, piqued Michael Guillén's interest in its author, Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare, "a native Montrealer and 'monster kid' who teaches courses on genre cinema and monsters in the Humanities department of John Abbott College." So they met up a few weeks ago at the Fantasia International Film Festival and Michael's transcription of their conversation — touching on national identities, filmmakers who straddle the high and the low, "the knowledge systems of ordinary people" and more — is one of the week's best reads, which is why I wanted to point it out right at the top of this little roundup of horror-related items.

Mark Kermode picks film and TV's most enduring bloodsuckers
Max Schreck, Nosferatu (1922)
An unacknowledged adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (which was banned in Britain after copyright complaints from the author's litigious widow), Fw Murnau's silent gem still startles and amazes; the sight of the vampire's shadowy hand grasping at the heart of his victim ranks among cinema's most enduring images. So convincing was Max Schreck's unearthly performance that the modern movie Shadow of the Vampire would playfully suggest that he was the real deal; a genuine vampire hiding his identity in plain sight beneath the cover of movie magic.
Federico Luppi, Cronos (1993)
Debunking that most enduring vampire cliche, Guillermo del Toro's chilling masterpiece manages utterly to desexualise its antihero's bloodlust with extraordinary results. Having availed himself of the weirdly mechanical "Cronos" device, Federico Luppi's Jesus Gris staves off death with the occasional snifter of spilled claret. A...

British producer Neil Jones and director Stuart Brennan sent along a batch of exclusive stills (see them below) from their eagerly awaited horror indie Zombies Of The Night. The undead saga, scripted by Leo McKellen, is very close to finishing postproduction.
“The movie was conceived out of a frustration with other projects I was working on,” Brennan tells Fango. “I’ve been an advocate of the just-do-it approach to filmmaking, and I’m now at a stage in my career where projects are at the mercy of financiers and distributors, and that gets frustrating. It had been 10 months since I had last been on a film set, and I just rang up a bunch of crewmembers and asked if they wanted to spend a few days at a hotel in the countryside and shoot a feature.
