CBS has officially made its new series orders for next season. The network is likely putting a pin in its plans for comedy expansion by only picking two new half-hour series, the multi-camera Partners and Friend Me. CBS also showed that it is not ready to launch its first single-camera comedy since Worst Week in 2008 by passing on Nick Stoller’s well-regarded Entry Level. The network is loading up on the drama side with four new series, the contemporary Sherlock Holmes reboot Elementary, period drama Vegas (formerly Ralph Lamb), legal drama Made In Jersey (form. Baby Big Shot) and cop drama Golden Boy. The order of four new drama series does not bode well for the network’s bubble dramas. When CBS picked up four new dramas in 2010, it killed four existing dramas, including veterans The Ghost Whisperer and Cold Case. Last year, the network picked up four new drama series and canceled three.

2Nd Update 5:30 Pm: This is a mini-shocker. Word is that CBS is passing on the Nick Stoller comedy pilot Entry Level. There has always been concern whether CBS would schedule a single-camera comedy in its blocks of all-multi-camera sitcoms but the network had expressed commitment to the genre. However, while Entry Level was received well and was an early frontrunner, it looks like CBS will again stick to all-multi-camera comedies next season. I also hear that Applebaum is now dead too, along with Oh Fk, It’s You. That leaves only Elementary, Ralph Lamb, Baby Big Shot, Golden Boy, Friend Me, Partners and possibly Martin Lawrence in contention. Update 9Pm: I’ve confirmed that the Marin Lawrence comedy is not going forward, so here you have it: Elementary, Ralph Lamb, Baby Big Shot, Golden Boy, Friend Me and Partners appear to be CBS’ picks for next season. Previous Saturday...

I’ll say up front, before What Culture sent me to Berlin’s annual consumer technology show – Ifa (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) – last week, I wasn’t aware that Epson even made home cinema projectors. To my embarrassment it turns out they have been market leader in the field for the past decade, with 42 new projector products this year across home, professional and education markets.
In 2011 the emphasis of the company’s newly unveiled home range is understandably on 3D, as well as improved 2D. Yet there were also a few surprises and some nifty innovations too, with the world’s first iPod/iPad compatible projector in particular attracting a lot of attention.
That device (the snappily named Mg-850Hd) isn’t the smallest – certainly when compared to increasingly tiny Pico projectors – yet it is capable of displaying much higher resolution images than the usual portable unit and has 2 decent built-in 10W speakers.

Perhaps best known to us as Lt. Archie Hicox in Inglourious Basterds, now Michael Fassbener has become the villain du jour for comic book movies, apparently. According to Showbizz 411, Fassbender is now being courted to go rogue in X-Men: The First Class and the currently untitled Spider Man reboot. (H/T to The Playlist)
If Fassbender goes against the X-Men, he’ll become their arch rival Magneto and go to head with previously announced Professor Xavier, James McAvoy. The Matthew Vaughn project may also add Aaron Johnson (Kick Ass) as Cyclops as well. While Aaron Johnson may have been one of the weakest links in Kick Ass, the potential acting match up/showdown between McAvoy and Fassbender could take Entry Level X-Men to another level, in terms of acting.
Meanwhile in Culver City, California, Fassbender is being courted to play the as of yet unknown villain in the Spider Man reboot.
