Please bring America's Castles back
rmmd120 April 2007
A&E pulled America's Castles from its programming schedule effective April 2007. Although the series stopped production in 1999, the episodes are still timely and interesting. The photography is beautiful and the content interesting and informative. The series also focused some episodes on Castles outside the United States. Entire episodes were devoted to Scottish and English castles. The programs were a travelogue cum architectural refresher course. I believe the content was so compelling that it convinced vacationers and day-trippers to take the road less traveled and visit these beautiful vestiges of days gone by. The series also featured America's Christmas Castles, a superbly produced pageant of castles decorated for the holiday season. I really miss this show. Anyone else feel the same way? Mel Starr

Enjoyable tours of turn of the 20th century homes of the rich

I fondly reflect back on this series which ran from 1994-1998 or 1999. It included tours of homes of the rich in the early 1900's during the so-called "gilded age". Includes stories of the builders / owners and photos of some of those involved in their construction. It also provides input on the subsequent and current uses of the homes. Also included is commentary from well-known architects and home designers on the home designs to aid in understanding how they were built, etc. This series also serves as an invitation to visit some of the homes which are currently still existing.

Plan to purchase the video set to keep.

Warning: Spoilers
America'a Castles was one great show I enjoyed, and miss so much now.It had so much history too it that you were always learning.I'll never forget,as plain as day,the episode on the southern plantations. One had a pineapple-carved 4-poster bed, that was absolutely gorgeous!!! I wanted it,lol,& was lucky enough to find a very similar bed to it.The best part of it was probably about the last plantation on the show.It was so different! I've never seen 1 styled like it,but whats sad is it was never finished! In the middle of building it the Civil War broke out,and the men just up,and left everything the way it still sits.Full, now cemented, pots of paint,& wood everywhere. You think that after the war when the wife sued & got thousands that she would've finished her husbands dream.I wonder why she didn't?
