Riddle of the Soul
hellraiser717 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is another good episode if not a favorite. Here they get into Egyptology which is cool as that's a mythology not touched upon much.

Really like the surrealism and suspense in the episode from the scene of answering the riddle, where we see a lot of creepy faces that look like their from that tippy creepy dream sequence from "Dumbo", it's a really tricky riddle however like all riddles the answer is always simple and if you remember the "Riddle of the Sphinx" story you already know the answer.

The true villain of the episode is Hermione whom we see is selfish, vein and cruel, she is willing to do anything to get whatever she wants which is Ulysses as a slave/mate. We see she does something unethical to make is seem like Ulysses dealt in bad faith, this leads Ulysses to the second challenge where Hermione plays the shell game with him. Here she uses her main weapon which is illusion which perfectly fits her as she's a deceiver. The scuffle both Ulysses and her have is decent as we see him trying to both keep from getting knocked down or submitting but also trying to break Hermine's illusions to find the real one. This is suspenseful because despite Ulysses' efforts they're to no avail, his only hope is Telemachus and Yumi with the Mirror of Truth.

I really like how the philosophy of truth is utilized, as we see how the mirror of truth is used, in a way this is like the literary story, "The Picture of Dorian Grey" which was about a portrait reflecting a person's soul.

Telemachus and Yumi look into it and they see the best versions of themselves which makes sense because they each have exercised good character which is what the mirror reflects the results of that character, they see the best of themselves because their being their best selves.

We then see the mirror used in the end to break Hermine's illusions but also her illusion about herself, as we see a disturbing scene when she looks in the mirror, she is a grotesque old diseased hag.

This perfectly reflects who she is inside, being cruel, vein and selfish has sickened her soul; despite still looking beautiful outside she can't hide from the truth inside herself.

Sphinx kept her from seeing the mirror because of what he knows the mirror will possibly reveal as he's seen this from her character but keeping her from the truth didn't do her any favors nor himself. In fact, in put her in worse danger because by not seeing the truth of her own actions affecting others but also and how it affects and contributes to her character.

The ending is hopeful as Hermione has now seen her reflection, she now has given herself a chance to do something about it, she now has the power to make the changes necessary so she can someday be her best self.

What you do for the inside is what makes you truly beautiful.
