As we say good-bye to 2009, we reflect back on a year of space opera spectacles, animated allegories and protracted period pieces. The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds and Up in the Air were favorites among critics in 2009, though one of those films actually didn't make our list of the twelve most entertaining films of 2009. We'll let you read on to figure out which one was omitted—you can feel free to chastise us in the Comments section below if you think we were unfair for leaving it out.
How do we interpret "entertaining," you ask? Not necessarily the best, or most influential…or most "important"…but what we considered to be the dozen most enjoyable and/or absorbing films of 2009—broadly defined, films that pulled you into the story for one reason or another, and weren't forgotten 10 minutes after leaving the theater. Films that elicited an emotional reaction, not through manipulation,

It's been a long time coming, but Steven Soderbergh's two-part biopic about Argentine-Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara will finally get the full DVD and Blu-ray release that it deserves this coming January. Apparently they had hoped to have it ready for December, but Soderbergh needed extra time to reconstruct deleted scenes and prepare some of the supplementary material. In the words of Criterion president Peter Becker, the delay was "a trade we will always make, even if it means we don't get the benefit of sales in the holiday season, and we think that's the kind of decision our collectors would want us to make". Kudos to Criterion for that.
The extras on this release will include the following:
High-definition digital transfers of Che: Part One and Che: Part Two, supervised and approved by director Steven Soderbergh, with DTS-hd Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
Audio commentaries on both films,

You can bring director Steven Soderbergh's two-part epic biopic home in one new DVD and Bd edition next year. Che will be released on DVD and Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection on January 19, 2010. The film, which was released in two separate parts (Che (Part 1) and Che (Part 2)) in theaters will be released as one single film here, with both the DVD and Bd editions priced at $49.95 Srp. Take a look at the cover art and special features below. The film stars Benecio del Toro as Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara.
Far from a conventional biopic, Steven Soderbergh's film about Che Guevara is a fascinating exploration of the revolutionary as icon. Daring in its refusal to make the socialist leader into an easy martyr or hero, Che paints a vivid, naturalistic portrait of the man himself (with a stunning, Cannes-award-winning performance by Benicio del Toro), from his overthrow of the

Along with the previously announced Jon Hamm, Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch has added another good-looking man to its predominantly female cast: Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac, who most recently appeared in Body of Lies and Che: Part One.
Variety broke the news of Isaac's signing onto Snyder's upcoming project for Warner Bros./Legendary, which centers on a girl who's institutionalized by her stepfather and retreats into an alternative reality. Emily Browning plays the girl; Carla Gugino, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Scott Glenn, and Abbie Cornish are also on board. Zack and Deborah Snyder are producing Sucker Punch through their Cruel & Unusual banner. He's directing from a script he co-wrote with Steven Shibuya.
Keep it here for more on Sucker Punch as we draw closer to its fall start date in Vancouver.

Catalina Sandino Moreno is no newcomer to the Hollywood scene.
Moreno is an Oscar-nominated actress with some very impressive work under her belt.
This twenty-eight-year-old actress hails from Bogota, Colombia, and she was the first ever Colombian to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Her husband, David Elwell, is a cinematic lighting technician who worked with her on the film for which she was nominated – Maria Full Of Grace. Moreno won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead in that film, as well as the New Generation Award at the London Critics Circle Film Awards and the Imagen Award, amongst others.
Maria Full Of Grace was her first film, if you can believe it, and quite the breakthrough performance for Moreno it was.
After Maria, Moreno took the part as Angie in Journey To The End Of The Night and as Ana in Paris, I Love You before becoming Sylvia for Fast Food Nation,

Penn: 'I Should Be Competing For An Oscar With Del Toro'

Sean Penn is stunned pal Benicio Del Toro hasn't been recognised for his portrayal of revolutionary Che Guevara in biopic Che. Penn singled out Del Toro as one name the film award organisations had overlooked during his Best Actor acceptance speech at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on 25 January, and he's still struggling to come to terms with the fact the four-hour epic has become the forgotten movie of 2009.
He says, "The fact that there aren't crowns on (Che director Steven) Soderbergh's and Benicio Del Toro's heads right now, I don't understand.
"That is such a sensational movie, Che. Benicio is f**king good in it. And the fact that I'm not running into these people on this awards-party circuit, it's crazy.
"Maybe because it's (Che) in Spanish, maybe the length, maybe the politics."
Penn will compete in the Best Actor category at the upcoming Academy Awards on 22 February for his role in Milk. He will go up against Brad Pitt, Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella and Richard Jenkins.

And so as the festivities die down and Christmas feels like it was simply ages ago, we enter into a new year. Sure, you’re broke after over-spending on presents, feeling heavy after too much Christmas pud and dreading the dark mornings minus the glow of the twinkling fairy lights but Happy New Year! For many this will mean a return to work on Monday as the weekly slog starts over again, however before you get glum at the prospect there are just a few days of fun to be had and so spend them wisely. Might we suggest a trip to the cinema? There’s something for everyone with stylised comic book action, provocative drama and a historical biopic. How’s about that for dispelling those post-Xmas blues?
If you see… The Spirit, a comic book crime caper starring Gabriel Macht as a cop that comes back from the
