Interesting "backstory" documentary on "Peyton Place"...
An interesting, informative glimpse at the circumstances surrounding Fox's big success from the tawdry Grace Metalious novel, PEYTON PLACE, lifting the lid on small town gossip in a New England town.
TERRY MOORE, RUSS TAMBLYN, David NELSON and HOPE LANGE all talk about their experiences appearing in the film and there are film clips that help illustrate their points. (For fans of the film, Moore and Tamblyn also give their commentaries on the DVD of "Peyton Place", the '57 film starring Lana Turner. And it's definitely worth listening to the two of them discuss cast members and memories).
Also of interest, is the insight into the author, the very troubled Grace Metalious, who was totally unable to deal with fame and fortune, evidently finding solace in alcohol when her hometown refused to recognize her best-seller as anything but trash. She herself had problem with her own self-worth, judging the film "a nice little film, well acted, beautiful photography", but disappointed that the script didn't do more with her story. Asked whether she thought "Peyton Place" would be remembered twenty-five years from then, she immediately said, "Certainly not." Little did she know it would become a fondly remembered TV show that gave prominence to Mia Farrow and Ryan O'Neal ten years later, nor that the film itself would have such a lasting effect on film fans years later.
Worth watching for anyone devoted to the film which used Camden, Maine as the New England town for location photography.
