Loved it.

Firstly, I love spooky stories set in empty schools. There's just a great atmosphere about them. Or at least there is with old schools, the type you would see on TV shows from the 70's & 80's. I guess a modern school setting would not have the same atmosphere. I'm the same with libraries.

So when 'Shadows: After School' came up as a recommended watch on my youtube account, I couldn't resist it.

I have to say I loved it from the opening shots, flying across the Welsh valleys. I liked the fact it was set in Wales, just purely because it gave it a bit of a difference. And I have a penchant for old TV shows anyway, because of the way they look (dark, dingy, gritty and nostalgic).

The irate P.E. teacher was a great character and I could have watched a series' worth of episodes between the 2 boys and the teacher alone. Funny, great characters that reminded me of my school days.

The 2 boys get sent to the teacher's office to be dealt with after school however, it appears when the time comes that the teacher has forgotten about them and they are left in an empty school.

Hanging around for the teacher, they decide to fill in some personality questionnaires that are on the desk. They do so and, when comparing answers, find they have written the exact same thing as each other but then don't recall filling it in. It's quite spooky as they read out their answers and it is clear their responses have been guided by an unseen hand.

Not wanting to give anything away, I will say no more about the plot. Things get creepier and I have to say, despite my years, I did find myself a little spooked out while watching this show. Which is great because that's the idea. Apart from being scarier than expected, the episode itself was highly enjoyable.

I don't know how they captured it but there is so much atmosphere in this short TV programme and I am looking forward to watching more episodes.

Another good school-based show to watch is 'Frighteners: The School Room' which is an ideal accompaniment to After School.

A great atmospheric episode

Warning: Spoilers
This episode has virtually everything a perfect episode should have. The concept is nice, production values high, acting top-notch, effects good, plot tragic but with resolution and setting absolutely key. Being set in a comprehensive school in South Wales during a time when mining was still important we see that the strict discipline from a games master which sees two young boys left seemingly alone in school after-hours sets the scene for a great story. Nothing is wasted, nothing is squandered. The dialogue and plot work hand in hand to create a chilling tale. Both young male principal actors create a real sense of belief and seem to feed off of each other. Their dynamism is palpable. The story is sad, with a fitting conclusion. There is genuine pathos created at the climax. A rather great episode.

Spooky stuff

A very slight and low budget story with just two characters in a tiny enclosed setting for the most part...and yet this is a tremendous ghost story. It's extremely spooky, it has some heart-in-mouth scare sequences, and it's also moving with a good historical background. The weakest part is the acting from the kids (although Gareth Thomas is a welcome surprise) but even they're not too bad, while the ghostly material is quite excellent and surprisingly dark for a kid's show.
