Almost every name in "X-Gen" has some connection - obvious or obscure - to figures or events from Generation X. Example: Kirk's favorite beer, "Eddie's Black Circle", is derived from the title of a Pearl Jam song. The etymology or literary use of other names gives hints about character and/or plot (the grunge band "Coupland", Prof. and Zoe Mehta, Lotus Pharmaceuticals, Tobi, the boy band "Teen Spirit," etc.).
Along with the usual interruptions that come with any shoot, filming for "X-Gen" also had to be postponed temporarily due to a continuously circling, low-flying bi-plane. On another occasion, a huge parade (complete with marching band) passed by, for 90 minutes, about 30 feet from a shooting location.
The filmmakers cast 6 female roles based on the auditions for the "Nikki" character.
The music video for the boy band "Teen Spirit" (filmed on the North Carolina coast while a massive storm approached) contains several references to a famous sequence in "Top Gun" and the opening sequence to "The Monkees".
The "suburban rant" segment was inspired by the Grinch's rant about Whoville in Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". The entire segment was created by using CG elements derived from shooting actors and a single mini-van in front of a single house.
