Essential viewing for any science nut

An absolute gem of a series. I remember it well, viewing it during the early years of my medical training. It was certainly released on Betamax at one stage but appears to have not had a DVD release.

Inspirational, historically correct with the usual effective BBC dramatic edge. Anyone with an interest in science, particularly microbiology would find this enormously entertaining. Reminiscent of those old biographical movies from the 50's and 60's re Pasteur, Curie and Ehrlich

Can anyone suggest how the BBC can be encouraged to release this fantastic series on DVD. Should not be left hidden away in a vault.

Best film on Semmelweis

I've read the best books written on Semmelweis and watched several films on his life and work. This is easily the best. Robert Lang does a fine job as Semmelweis. The writing, direction and camera work is very well done. The final part, after he finishes writing his etiology, it's rejection, his reaction and ultimate mental breakdown are, however, dealt with much too quickly. The greatest focus is on his discovery, but there should be equal focus on the rigid, antediluvian thinking, which permeated the medical profession then and still does to this day.

Must-see for everybody

When I was a child, I saw this show and it impressed me for life.

I'm 55 year old now and I could see it again.

It's remarkable how I can remember scenes and quotes AFTER 45 years! You can imagine how much this show have leaved a deep print on me.
