"C'est la vie!"

"Sunken Treasure" is an odd episode of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" because instead of spending the show exploring living creatures in the sea, the crew spends the program searching for sunken treasure. After discovering a cannon, the Calypso crew HOPES that it's evidence of the Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This treasure was already located and partially recovered by the Phipps expedition...hundreds of years ago. Or, is this just some random ordinary ship filled with nothing of distinction. Watch as crew look for evidence of the identity of this ship. And, watch them locate pottery and other trinkets in this Caribbean adventure.

I found this episode surprising not only because it was devoted to treasure hunting but because of the destructive way they searched. Although Cousteau today is known as a scientist, conservationist and explorer, here instead of leaving the reef pristine, they pretty much destroyed it- -and as scuba diver I found this very disturbing. Still, it was an interesting show and it is worth seeing whether or not their efforts made them all millionaires...or just sad losers.
