Golden Horse Awards: Maggie Cheung, Ang Lee, Leon Dai, Tsai Ming-liang

1 hour ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Maggie Cheung alert!

She walked the Taiwanese red carpet today in this white number to your left. She was presenting Best Picture at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse is Taiwanese in origin but it's for Chinese language films regardless of country of origin so it's very competitive now. Warlords and Lust, Caution, which both had international releases, were recent winners of Best Picture.

This year, Maggie handed the trophy to No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti which, if we ever see it in the States, might be called I Can't Live Without You or Not Without You. That's Taiwan's submission for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar race. The film is from actor/director Leon Dai and it's about a poor man who loses his daughter once the government learns of their illegal living conditions.

Cave of Forgotten Tales: The Forbidden Kingdom

21 October 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | thetorchonline | See recent thetorchonline news »

Some fantasy films are made and immediately become a part of the cultural zeitgeist, integrating themselves into pop culture and slang, so that every movie-goer worth his or her salt understands a reference to Middle Earth, or can tell you what happens when you flick and swish your wand, chanting "Wingardium Leviosa." But not every film can be a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. Some films are made and, through no fault of their own, never manage to find the enormous mainstream success that is so coveted. When this happens, these movies are banished to an ethereal storage dimension called the Cave of Forgotten Tales, and become lost to time. But here in the offices of TheTorchOnline.com, we have a portal to this mysterious dimension, and from time to time, we venture into this cave, looking for the blockbusters that might, could, or should have been. And then we review them. »

Jackie Chan Is A Flying Duck

13 October 2009 11:11 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Rush Hour did a lot for Jackie Chan, but one thing it did not do was turn him into an American action hero. Sure, he pulled off being in a couple B-Movies and was even able to somewhat revive his career with the somewhat successful The Forbidden Kingdom. But more than the novelty karate sidekick Jackie Chan is not. At least not in the States. But of course, he still makes movies. And according to THR, his next may be Flying Duck, a road comedy that is described by its funders as a .cross-border bromance.. The movie will be directed by indie favorite Jia Zhangke. Apparently the role he.ll play in the movie will be a small one and will .be a play on his cop persona.. With a guy like Chan who is mostly all awe and not much talent, it.s hard not to be bummed about »

10 Most Underrated Young Actors

12 October 2009 7:54 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - -

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

Uma Thurman Stands On Ceremony

30 September 2009 12:51 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Uma Thurman has signed on to star in the comedy, Ceremony, which marks the directorial debut of prodigious whippersnapper, Max Winkler.More on the Son Of Fonz later. Let’s talk about the movie first. It’ll star Michael Angarano – last seen being holding his own with Jet Li and Jackie Chan in The Forbidden Kingdom – as a young man who falls in love with Thurman’s older woman. That’s problem no. 1.Problem no. 2 is that she’s about to get married, presumably in the Ceremony of the title. Which could complicate things a tad.Sounds like a Graduate-style comedy to us – and if it’s half as good as The Graduate, then it’ll be twice as good as most of the comedies coming down the pike in the next 12 months. And now to Winkler – as you might have guessed, he’s the son of Henry Winkler, and »

Uma Thurman Joins Max Winkler’s Ceremony

30 September 2009 12:19 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Uma Thurman will star in Max Winkler’s “Ceremony”.  You may not know the name Max Winkler for right now, but something tells me that the guy will be huge sometime soon.  He recently co-wrote “The Adventurer’s Handbook” with Jonah Hill and Matt Spicer and he also directed the pretty great web series “Clark and Michael” starring Clark Duke and Michael Cera a couple of years ago.  The guy seems to have some talent and is now gearing up to shoot his debut feature, “Ceremony”, starring Thurman and Michael Angarano (”The Forbidden Kingdom”) this fall.  You can get the full details when you click on the jump.

Variety reports that Michael Angarano is set to play “a young man who falls for an older woman (Thurman) who is about to get married.”  Thats pretty much everything we know about the film for right now.  We also know that Jason Reitman »

First look: Jackie Chan beating Jaden Smith with a pole on the set of ‘The Kung Fu Kid’

17 September 2009 1:05 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Here’s your first look at Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan on the set of The Karate Kid remake, The Kung Fu Kid. In the pictures we can see Jackie Chan tormenting young Jaden with a large pole. This is presumably a tactic to instill courage in the lad or is very, very cruel. I like to think it’s the latter.

Jaden can also be seen in a horse stance performing some moves on the cool, cool Chinese air as Chan continues to smash Smith with his weapons. One day, the student will become the master so Chan better watch out. In the meantime, Chan will continue to look like Stallone and beat up kids.

Production on The Kung Fu Kid began mid-summer with filming currently going in Beijing. The film is due out June 11, 2010.

Jet Li heads to China for dramatic role

27 August 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Martial Arts star and all-around master of bad-assery Jet Li will head back to Chinese filmmaking with the upcoming drama Ocean Paradise.

This film marks Li’s first Chinese project since 2007’s The Warlords from Peter Chan.

Ocean Paradise also stars Kwai Lun-mei (All About Women) and will be directed by Together With You scribe Xue Xiao-l.

Details of Ocean Paradise are still unknown. However, seeing Li tapped for a “drama” instead of high-flying actioner should give readers a double-take. The 46-year-old Wushu champion just wrapped up filming of Sylvester Stallone’s action ensemble The Expendables and was last seen in the States via The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and The Forbidden Kingdom.

Jet Li Going Back To China

26 August 2009 7:13 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It's tempting to beg Jet Li not to go back to China, to stick around making American films because we need him so badly. But really, we haven't been treating him so well lately-- his two most recent English-language films were The Forbidden Kingdom and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and the next project on his list is the cameo-packed but sure to be ridiculous The Expendables. So back to China Li goes, with plans to star in a movie that--gasp!-- might not feature him kicking martial arts ass. According to Variety, the film is called Ocean Paradise, and will be "very different from his previous movies," as said by the film's publicist Zhang Hongyan. If that's a coded way of saying his recent American movies have sucked... well, yeah, I guess I see your point. »
