You may have noticed the words "Comic Con" popping up quite a bit recently as well as the teaser bar on every single page promoting our coverage, the little box on the homepage beneath the flash rotator and the box to the right promoting our most recent articles from said "Comic Con" and all point to the RopeofSilicon Comic Con 2008 Blog. Well, for those not in the know, Comic Con is an insanely large comic book convention down in San Diego, California that used to play host to hundreds of convention goers, but since Hollywood's arrival as they bring first look footage, trailers and the stars and directors of their comic book and sci-fi related films to the convention the hundreds have turned into upwards of 125,000 people. Some may consider Comic Con a geekfest of sorts, but considering The Dark Knight just beat Spider-Man 3 to become the largest weekend

Several years ago, I made a whimsical prediction that soon enough, there would be the "summer movie season" and the "Oscar season" and almost every movie would have to fall into one of those two categories. There are a couple of weeks on either side where absolute rubbish is released, movies like Code Name: The Cleaner and Wicker Man, which are so awful you can't fit them into one of the major categories.
It's looking more and more likely that we're headed that direction. Look at the big expectations this August, with The Mummy, Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Death Race all hitting theaters within four weeks. Rewind the tape back to 2004 and you'll see that August was filled with Collateral and Alien vs. Predator are the only major releases that are even remotely interesting. And I'm giving AvP a lot of slack in that regard.

Last week B-d stringer SpookyDan had the pleasure of chatting with Rob Cohen, director of Universal Pictures' The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, which arrives in theaters on August 1st. Inside you'll find the meat of the chat, which includes talk of the visual FX, how Cohen worked his way up the movie ladder and what his plans are for the DVD release this Christmas. "I like the big canvas, but I have been blessed in that Fast and Furious was Bigger than The Skulls, xXx was bigger than Fast and Furious, and Stealth was bigger than xXx, and now The Mummy is bigger than Stealth. In a way it's like weight training; you start with the ten pound dumbbells, then you move to the 15 pounds. Making these movies builds up your muscles, as a filmmaker."

Brendan Fraser was reluctant to sign up for the third installment of the Mummy trilogy when he heard his co-star Rachel Weisz wasn't going to be reprising her role.
The pair starred together in the first two movies in the action franchise but Weisz opted out of appearing in new movie The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
The actress was eventually replaced by Maria Bello, who joined the cast to take on Weisz's character Evie.
And Fraser insists he missed Weisz right from the very first read through.
He says, "I felt Rachel's absence when I read the screenplay for the first time. We were partners, friends, colleagues, and I couldn't read the screenplay and not think about hearing her say it this way, or that way. We had the chemistry."
But the star insists the movie hasn't suffered following the loss of Weisz, adding, "We didn't want to change the storyline where we start laying flowers at her grave. I don't want to give the joke away but I can promise you a brand new Evie."

One more piece of news from this afternoons interviews for Universal Pictures' The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. When we saw the film this past weekend there was one thing of note, Luke Ford was the centerpiece of the film, while Brendan Fraser appeared to be more of a footnote. When asked about future films, Luke Ford told SpookyDan that he has signed on for a total of three films, leading us to believe he is being primed as the new leading O'Connell in the Mummy franchise. I guess we'll be reporting more if the film is a box office success August 1st weekend.

This afternoon SpookyDan conducted an exclusive one-on-one interview with Rob Cohen, director of Universal's upcoming The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, who revealed some interesting news about Fred Dekker's classic '87 movie. Cohen tells Bloodyy-Disgusting that Paramount Pictures has acquired the remake rights to Monster Squad, which followed a group of kids hunting down Dracula and his minions who are attempting to take over the world. Cohen also reveals that he is planning to produce the remake, but does not intend on directing. Count Dracula adjourns to Earth, accompanied by Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Gillman. The uglies are in search of a powerful amulet that will grant them power to rule the world. Our heroes - the Monster Squad are the only ones daring to stand in their way.

Rob Cohen’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” opens nationwide Aug. 1, 2008, which means it’s time for Universal to step up promotion for the third installment in the popular series that began with Stephen Sommers’ “The Mummy” in 1999.
Below you can watch two brand-new TV spots from the upcoming adventure starring Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Luke Ford and Maria Bello. As usual, most of the footage comes straight from the film’s trailer, but if you watch closely enough you’ll be able to spot a few new images as well.

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | Rss Feed Well, as you can see I am attempting a new layout this week and I have a feeling it will be changing over the next month or so as I am working on ways to make this column a little easier on me by having the database do most of the work. I can say this week was easier, but I think I still have a little something up my sleeve to speed up the process a little more and perhaps add a few more bells and whistles to the presentation below. Enough of that though, let's see what's out there this week. Van Helsing (2-Disc Collector's Edition) I actually have this here in the lab, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it again. I tried giving it another go around way back when I received the HD DVD version and I just couldn't.

Director Rob Cohen is currently busy wrapping up post-production of “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” the third installment in the popular series that kicked off in 1999 with Stephen Sommers’ “The Mummy.”
ShockTillYouDrop’s Ryan Rotten had the chance to pay the director a visit in at the editing bay and chat a bit about the film’s setting and some of its core characters. Here’s what Cohen had to say about shooting on location:
“There are no green screen sets in this movie. I went all over China - the deserts of Beijing. [The scene you're watching] is a 300-year-old Ming opera house that the red guards tried to destroy. There are these beautiful murals in there.”
Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell, who this time faces the ruthless Emperor Han (Jet Li). Maria Bello, Luke Ford and Michelle Yeoh co-star. “Tomb” hits theaters Aug. 1, 2008.

This summer has been pretty good so far in terms of quality films, in fact it has probably been one of the best in years. Wouldn't it be awesome if Universal Pictures' The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor was as action-packed fun as it looks? We'll know soon enough as the film hits theaters August 1st, making it one of this summer's closing films. Today Director Rob Cohen updated his blog with a look at a new international poster, along with an update about post-production. Well, Lionsgate have moved The Midnight Meat Train yet again back into it's originally slated August 1st release slot. (It was set for July 11th up against Hellboy 2.) Now, it's biggest competition is The Mummy 3, but considering that's Pg kid-fare, horror fans seeking something a lot more intense have The Midnight Meat Train to look forward to. However, rumor has it that (as of now), Lionsgate is planning a very limited release, which is a terrible shame because we've seen the movie and it's great. We'll keep you posted when we hear the official word. The Midnight Meat Train was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and based on the Clive Barker story from his Books Of Blood collection. It stars Bradley Cooper, Leslie Bibb, Vinnie Jones and Brooke Shields. Check out our First Look review by clicking the logo/image below.
