This very early episode of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" is an amazing one to watch today. Back in 1968 when it debuted, the notion of Cousteau and his crew shooting small harpoons into whales in order to study them (and not kill them) must have just been accepted. Today, however, I am sure that more than a few folks would be alarmed or even enraged to see such tactics being employed in the name of science! As they harpoon adult Fin as well as baby Sperm whales, the narrators insist it does the animals no harm!
In addition to terrorizing whales to learn about their behaviors, the Cousteau folks visit a variety of places, such as Mystic Seaport (in Connecticut), the Smithsonian Institution as well as to a holding tank holding a recently captured Killer whale. Overall, this is an informative yet horrifying episode of the famous nature series.
