Bad, but in a good way
thomasgouldsbrough19 February 2022
This episode is terrible. The opening is one of the worst starts to an episode I've ever seen. Gwen is meant to pass a tool to Owen, but "accidently" manages to throw it at the Alien Debris and punctures it. The idea that Gwen feels guilt over unleashing the alien is clever, but the whole scene was ridiculous to look at, and frankly laughable. Most of the scenes in this episode are bad, but in some ways they're funny to laugh at. A lot of the inclusion of selected scenes in this episode only feel there, because they know they can get away with it, as it's 15 rated. The episode definitely has its own charm, but whether that's in a good way is certainly questionable.

Call This One "The OOPS Files"...
cchase10 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
You know that awkward feeling you get when you first start a new job, when you're not quiet sure where you fit in just yet, and it seems like everything you do not to look like a klutz seems to have the opposite effect instead? Gwen Cooper is SOOO there right now with the Torchwood team...especially when an accidental gaffe winds up unleashing a sex-starved alien...Whose hunger for the erotic energy unleashed by the human orgasm, results in all of its victims "coming AND going", with the only evidence of their deaths being little red piles of dust..all that's left of the unwitting victims. It's X FILES meets SPECIES meets that ST: OS episode when the Enterprise was invaded by those interdimensional beings who kept turning the crew into hexagonal sugar cubes.

The mix of daffiness, death and darkness becomes even more apparent here, especially since in one hysterical scene, Owen ends up locked naked in a cell by an escaped prisoner, showing that even the "seasoned" team vets aren't immune to screwing things up, either.

Overall, a great second episode, with a nice (and not overly preachy) commentary about the price of sexual freedom in society.

Torchwood does sex
darrenhf6 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's only the second episode, but Torchwood is pulling away from its roots with this story revolving around the most basic of human activities - pulling in a nightclub and having a one night stand. Admittedly, most of these don't end up with you dissolving into a small pile of red dust, but then that' nightclubs for you these days. If the plot sounds familiar then it's probably because it's suspiciously like that of the movie SPECIES. Sex-crazed alien on the loose and a small team have to track her down and stop her from wreaking her own particular brand of copulatory havoc. It's slick, it's smooth and it looks great, but it's a step down from the opening episode and only the two main characters of Gwen and Captain Jack get a look in.

It's pretty wild, but it's good.

A sex starved Alien is on the rampage, craving lust, Cardiff, 2006, was a bit wild.

I remember the shock when I first saw this one, just thinking oh my god, did they really just do that, but why not? It's fun, it's brash, Gwen Cooper certainly gets a wild first day on the job.

It's well acted, it looks nice, and has some decent special effects. You cannot help but wonder if there is an influence here of X Files episode Gender bender.

They get the chance to so the stories they'd never get away with in Dr Who, the first one involves a sex starved Alien, it's priceless. 7/10.

Russell T. Davies, the world of Doctor Who still misses you.
