The episode pays homage to the "Pink Panther" films:
- the "Black Panther" emerald is a copy of the "Pink Panther", complete with an imperfection resembling a panther;
- the Black Panther resembles the Pink Panther, and is seen to come to life at certain times;
- Inspector Conaiseau and his sidekick Hageito, who appear in this episode, are homages to Inspector Clouseau and his aide Cato;
- and Lupin and Conaiseau slip into a nudist colony, just like Clouseau in A Shot in the Dark (1964).
Although "Lupin III" creator Monkey Punch claims to have based the manga on mysteries, it holds distinct parallels with the early "Pink Panther" films: both are crime capers where an inspector endlessly chases a mastermind thief, who is always one step ahead...
Inspector Conaiseau's name is a layered pun in Japanese, stemming from his inspiration, Inspector Clouseau of "The Pink Panther." In Japanese, Clouseau sounds like "kuru zo", which means "I'm coming (over)". Conaiseau's name, respectively sounds like "konai zo", which means "I'm not coming" or "I can't come."
Also known as "My Birthday Pursuit."
It's not known when Fujiko's date of birth is, although a book from 1979 says it's one the seventh of June.
