- A traffic accident leaves 14-year-old independent street tough Yusuke Urameshi dead. His ghost watches the scene and recalls events leading up to his death. As he accepts his situation, Boton the Grim Reaper shows up, but her pink robes, baby blue hair and cheerfully chatty nature are not what Yusuke would've expected.—statmanjeff
- On a typical day, people are seen walking across the street and a teen boy is shown getting hit by a car, people gasp as the driver apologizes that he wasn't meant to hit him. The boy is shown floating in mid air. The narrator says that his name is Yusuke he is fourteen and the hero of the story but he's dead. The title card appears. His body is floating down to the ground and he tries touching his dead body but an ambulance appears. The doctors take the body away in a stretcher, Yusuke tries to punch the doctor, but he goes right through him, the ambulance drives Yusuke is thinking to the earlier day. Keiko is shown going up on the rooftop of the high school. Yusuke is in his green uniform. He takes a bean out and tries to eat it. Kayko takes it away from him and yells at him for not wearing his blue uniform. She explains all the girls have to wear their school uniforms. Yusuke flips Keiko's skirt and she slaps him. He goes flying has a red face mark. He walks away. Keiko says that he hasn't grown up at all. Keiko walks downstairs and her two friends are worried about Yusuke. Keiko explains that Yusuke is gentle, and then they have nothing to be worried about. Yusuke goes outside and sees two kids talking. The one kid says that he took a wallet and then he told his friend that he was Yusuke's cousin. Yusuke raises his fist to punch the student but Mr. Iwamoto sees the wallet on the ground and Yusuke mouths off to him. He's walks away and he tries to eat another piece of gum. He's punched in the back of the head by another teacher, Mr. Takanaka. He tries to pull Yusuke away but Yusuke has a fake ear on that falls off. Yusuke walks home and finds his mom laying in bed, smoking a cigarette still in her her pajamas, he explains to her that he left school because he was angry. His mom turns on the TV. Yusuke leaves and kicks a can, a bunch of gang members surround Yusuke. Kuwabara appears and Yusuke fights him. Yusuke wins the fight. Yusuke sees a little boy. His soccer ball rolls over to Yusuke and he yells at the boy, telling him to not play in the street. He makes faces with the soccer ball. The boy kicks the soccer ball and it rolls into the street, just as a car comes by. Yusuke hesitates, but decides to push the boy out the way. He gets hit by the car. he is seen flowing up above again. Yusuke realizes that he is a ghost. Botan, a cheerful girl in a kimono with blue hair appears, she explains that Yusuke was not supposed to die, and that the car was going to swerve to the left but he was hit anyway. The boy is at the hospital and the doctor tells him that he will be okay. Yusuke tells Botan that he can go to hell or whatever there is that he is going. Botan tells Yusuke that she is there to give him an ordeal that can give him his life back. Yusuke decides to think it over. Later at his wake, Yusuke sees people crying and Kuwabara tries to punch his picture, but his gang members stop him and drag him away. Mr. Iwamoto mocks Yusuke but Mr. Takenaka praises him for his bravery. Keiko is shown crying as well as well as Yusuke's mother. The boy that Yusuke pushed out of the way during the traffic accident and his mother arrive, and they say their prayers to Yusuke. Yusuke tells Botan that he does want to do the ordeal and Botan happily grabs Yusuke and they fly out to Spirit World.
