Brittany Murphy, East Coast Snow And A Zombie Hand In Today's Twitter-Wood

21 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

This has been a bad holiday season for untimely deaths around Hollywood, and none have been more unexpected than actress Brittany Murphy's on Sunday. Alyssa Milano, Peter Facinelli, Paris Hilton and virtually everyone else with a Twitter account associated with the entertainment industry has something to say about Murphy, and there's a rundown below.

The other big nationwide news of the past weekend has been the massive snowstorm pounding the East Coast. "Twilight" actress Christian Serratos was one of those who had her travel plans derailed by the frozen precipitation dump, on Washington, D.C. You can find those posts after jump along with Fred Durst's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" clan name and Neil Gaiman's undead lawn ornament. It's in the Twitter-Wood report for December 21, 2009. (Editor's note: You'll see some crossover between this post and our earlier Brittany Murphy tweet round-up. That's okay... this is a »

Brittany Murphy Tweets From Peter Facinelli, Paris Hilton And Others In Another Twitter-Wood Early Edition

21 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Earlier today, we brought you an early edition of Twitter-Wood packed chock-full of celebrity praise for James Cameron's sci-fi epic, "Avatar." It's a much more tragic set of circumstances that brings me back to you with another Twitter-Wood early edition.

"Clueless" star Brittany Murphy left us suddenly over the weekend, the victim of a heart attack at the too-young age of 32. The breaking news resulted in an outpouring of grief and sympathy for Murphy's family from around the celebrity Twittersphere. I'll let the people who knew her take it from here...

@ParisHilton So sad to hear about Brittany Murphy, such a tragedy. She was such a beautiful, funny and sweet girl. My heart goes out to her family.

@peterfacinelli Brittany Murphy... U were Bold, Brave, and Beautiful. Thank you 4 being the free spirit u were, and always »

‘300′ Prequel To Be Titled ‘Xerxes’

17 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

300, one of the biggest hits of 2007, directed by Zack Snyder and based off the comic book mini-series by Frank Miller (The Spirit, Sin City the movie and comic series), is now supposedly getting a prequel. For the prequel, the story is set in time to see the battle of Marathon – which took place ten years before the events of 300.

During the battle, Xerxes’ father, Darius I, battled the Athenians. I believe this is passingly mentioned in a mocking tone in 300, when Leonidas denies acquiescing to Xerxes’ messengers, before kicking them down a giant hole in the middle of town.

Miller, who will again be writing and drawing the comic series before it’s taken to the big screen, has said to the La Times, “It’s the Battle of Marathon through my lens” and that he’s just about ready to begin. Of course, the interesting thing about 300, and some »

Frank Miller’s “300″ Prequel Is Called “Xerxes”

16 December 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

La Times spoke with Frank Miller about the follow up to 30 (earned $456 million in theaters worldwide) which will be titles “Xerxes.” It takes place about ten years before the events of 300.

“It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens,” Miller said. “I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”

The Battle of Marathon was fought about 26 miles from Athens by an Athenian army against a Persian force led by the Emperor Darius I, in 490 BC. The Greeks numbers around 10,000 and the Persians anywhere from twice to ten times that.

The Athenians beat the Persians back – but not before sending a runner 150 miles to Sparta to ask for help. The Spartans turned up a day or two later, after Athenians turned out victorious. Darius’ son Xerxes then seeks revenge in 480Bc that leads to the battle in “300.”

Miller said he is not surprised Greece is resurgent in Hollywood. »

Quickhits: '300' Sequel, 'Pirates 4', 'Inception' Poster and More!

Welcome to Quickhits – your chance to catch up on some of this week's hottest stories in less than 60 seconds. Ready? Go!   Frank Miller Discusses '300' Sequel (or is it Prequel?)   While most of Hollywood quietly forgets that Frank Miller ever made The Spirit, fanboys across the globe are still very interested to see where he can potentially take this 300 franchise. The first movie directed by Zack Snyder made a killing, and now Miller is working on a follow-up graphic novel that, according to him, will be named Xerxes and will take place 10 years prior to the events in 300. Miller told the La Times, "It's the battle of Marathon through my lens. I've finished the plot and I'm getting started on the artwork."   Similar to the battle in 300, the battle...

‘300′ Prequel Now Titled ‘Xerxes’

15 December 2009 11:17 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In July 2008, the producers confirmed a follow-up to Zack Snyder’s 300 was in the works.  At the time there weren’t any details outside of news that Frank Miller was writing another graphic novel on which another movie may be based.

Snyder, who has been reluctant to commit as screenwriter and director until he sees the finished product, updated press with progress and story details.  At the time he said it would take place between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea, which would make it a sequel to the Spartan story of King Leonidas.  No return of the bare-chested Gerard Butler, ladies.

Now, in an interview with the La Times’ Hero Complex, Frank Miller says its a prequel set 10 years before 300 and during the Battle of Marathon, and it’s titled Xerxes.  The plot is complete and he’s starting the artwork, he told Geoff Boucher.  I »

Miller Talks '300' Follow Up

15 December 2009 5:30 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Frank Miller recently spoke up on just what he's got cooking for his return to the "300" world: Miller is preparing a follow-up now titled “Xerxes,” which begins about 10 years before the events of “300,” and Snyder has expressed interest in it as a film property as well. “It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens,” Miller said Wednesday. “I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.” Well, the good news is that for right now it's only in graphic novel form. Hopefully it stays that way. I mean I enjoyed "300" but it doesn't need another chapter. Yes, I've said that about many seemingly stand-alone stories that have gotten sequels, but come on. It was a story about a last stand; all the heroes died at the end. Now we're gonna follow the villain around, ten years earlier? Will there be golden skies and CG blood »

Frank Miller Talks 300 Prequel Xerxes

15 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

The Los Angeles Times talked with Frank Miller about his follow-up feature to 300, the Zack Snyder-directed adaptation of his graphic novel about the doomed army of Spartans. 300 still holds the highest-grossing March release ever. There had been rumors of this sequel coming earlier this year with Miller going to Greece to research elements for the plot. Snyder is supposed to be coming back to direct.

Now we have a better idea of whats going on with the project from the writer himself. Miller said the follow-up is now titled Xerxes, and is set about 10 years before the events of 300.

“It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens,” Miller said Wednesday. “I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”

Miller said he is not surprised Greece is resurgent in Hollywood. “Every generation returns to ancient Greece because, well, the stories are so damn good, »

300 Prequel Update

15 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Frank Miller has announced some striking news on his 300 sequel. It’s not a sequel, for a start. And it’s not going to be called ‘301′ or ‘Another 300′. It’s a prequel and the title is pretty cool: Xerxes. The L.A. Times quoted the graphic novel legend:

“It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens. I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”

Whilst I don’t expect you all to be classicists, but the Battle of Marathon gave birth to the mordern day running event. Why? How? Well, during said battle (which took place roughly 26 miles from Athens), legend has it that messenger legged it all the way to the ancient city with news of the Greek victory.

The main villain of ‘300′ was, of course, the Persian emperor Xerxes. So what will the prequel focus on? The story will no doubt, as Miller mentions, »

Frank Miller Ejected from Buck Rogers Movie

11 December 2009 8:33 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Let’s face it, this was coming, especially after the disaster that was his live-action screen adaptation of “The Spirit” — Frank Miller, according to producers, no longer has any ties to the upcoming “Buck Rogers” movie from Paradox Entertainment. That’s according to the studio’s producer, Fredrik Malmberg, who tells IGN that Miller is no longer involved in the movie in any capacity. Paradox, along with Lawrence Abramson and George Furla, is also producing the long-awaited big screen return of sci-fi icon Buck Rogers. Frank Miller, who was previously attached to direct an earlier incarnation developed by different producers, is no longer involved. Again, no surprise. “The Spirit” was a disaster, and what buzz Miller generated after co-directing “Sin City” has since evaporated with the (lack of) box office returns of “The Spirit”. That might all change if “Sin City 2″ ever gets made, of course. Plus, that “300″ sequel is also on the horizon… »

Frank Miller exits Buck Rogers remake, plus Conan and Kull updates

10 December 2009 5:30 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Frank Miller is no longer on board the planned big-screen return of space pilot Buck Rogers, it's been revealed.

Miller co-directed Sin City, adapted from his own comics, and more recently helmed comic strip adaptation The Spirit. He also wrote the graphic novel on which Zack Snyder's 300 was based.

Last year he became involved with the Buck Rogers project reportedly because he knew the head of the Dille Trust which had owned the rights before they were acquired by Nu Image/Millennium Films.

As I reported at the time, Miller was set to direct the feature and make it a much darker, edgier version than the 1979-1981 TV series starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray.

Paradox Entertainment, along with Lawrence Abramson and George Furla, is producing Buck Rogers.

Paradox president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg told IGN that Miller was attached to direct an earlier incarnation developed by different producers and is no longer involved. »

Teenage 'Conan' Rumors Debunked, Frank Miller Off 'Buck Rogers' Movie

4 December 2009 9:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The long-awaited “Conan the Barbarian” reboot by director Marcus Nispel is picking up steam and the casting process has been well underway for the last month.

During an interview with IGN, Paradox Entertainment president Fredrik Malmberg revealed that “Conan” will be their next project to hit the big screen. And while no final casting decisions have been made yet, Malmberg stated that rumors that Conan would be a teenager for most of the movie are false.

Malmberg also confirmed that Frank Miller is no longer attached to direct the adaptation of the classic sci-fi comic strip, “Buck Rogers.” Miller’s removal has been suspected ever since the dismal box office performance of “The Spirit.”

In addition to “Conan”, Paradox is bringing a number of Robert E. Howard’s creations to the big screen. The recently announced “Kull the Conqueror” reboot will be written by Matthew Sands — the “Ninja Assassins” screenwriter »

Top 10 flops of the 00's

30 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

With the decade coming to a close at the end of the year, it's time to take stock. Here is a list of the biggest financial flops of 2000's first decade. #10: 2008's "The Spirit". With a price tag of $60 million, graphic novelist Frank Miller's movie took in barely a third of that, despite a fabulous cast that included Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson and Spain's Paz Vega. #9: The ambitious but too-pointed 1970¹s B-movie homage "Grindhouse". The movie made only $25 million but cost $67 million, which tainted maker Quentin Tarantino a loser in 2007. Meanwhile, America's enfant terrible has redeemed himself with "Inglourious Basterds". #9: The remake of the 1970's classic, "Rollerball", released in 2002. $70 million price tag, $19 million in sales. The failure seems to have tanked the career of formerly success director John McTiernan, who later got 4 months for lying to the FBI in the Anthony Pellicano affair. #7: "The Invasion »

Eva Mendes Exposes Cruelty of Fur Trade for PETA

Being one of PETA's loyal supporters in its campaign against fur, Eva Mendes once again lends her fame to enlighten people about the cruelty of fur industry. The 35-year-old recently takes the role of a host to the animal rights organization's new fur industry expose, and through two new videos debuted on Monday, November 23, she speaks out against wearing fur.

One of the videos features her taking viewers to the behind the scenes of the international fur trade as she narrates the footage of PETA's latest investigation over the fur farms and markets in China. The Sand Saref of "The Spirit" introduces the video saying, "Millions of animals are killed for their pelts each year. The thing is, I didn't always know how animals were killed for their fur, and I even wore fur once myself."

Eva Mendes on Nudity: "I Go For It"

12 November 2009 11:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Shocker! Displaying a positive attitude that should warm the heart of any moviegoer who loves the female form, Eva Mendes declares: "If I feel it's appropriate to show some nudity in the scenes then I go for it." She told Fox News: "As much as I use my sexuality, I have never felt exploited. I feel like it's on my terms and I have no problem with it."

Speaking as someone who first noticed Mendes when Ethan Hawke opened a door in Training Day to reveal her lying naked on a bed, I say: "I have no problem with it, either." The actress is promoting her appearance in Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which opens later this month (and prompted our own Jeffrey D. Anderson to wonder if the remake was a good idea in the first place.) Mendes has been willing to bare portions »

Veteran's Day Special: An Interview With Will Eisner

Editor's Note: The following interview with comics legend Will Eisner originally ran on Splash Page one year ago on Veteran's Day. While we normally shy away from re-posting stories from the archives, this conversation seemed to merit an exception, and is presented here in full again on the day when we remember the nation's veterans—a group of which Eisner was a member three times over. So, if you first read this interview a year ago, please excuse its return to the front page of the site—but if you're anything like me, you won't mind giving it another read. -Rm

Will Eisner is well known today for creating "The Spirit," his blue-clad superhero that received the Hollywood treatment at the hands of Frank Miller last year. But lesser known is that Eisner was a veteran of no less than three major wars: World War II (where he was an »

There will be 2 more stories. One will be about Nancy avenging Hartigan's death by killing remaining members of the Roark family. Miller says this will show "a whole new side of Nancy. »
