- Kelly rescues a wino from a fire, catches an arsonist, and prosecutes her first case in court, where she meets an attractive young legal aid solicitor. Joss's mum is visiting, and she invites Kelly to dinner with her and Joss.
- Kelly drags a homeless wino from a burning building, and promptly arrests a young man at the scene who admits he lights fires for a sexual thrill. Back at the station, however, he retracts his confession and asks for a lawyer. A new, young, legal aid solicitor turns up, and he and Kelly are immediately attracted to each other. When the case comes to court, it's her first time prosecuting. The lawyer asks her out before court - but then he demolishes her case, humiliating her. He's "just doing his job" - but she's furious of course and cancels the date. Then there's another fire... Meanwhile, Joss's mother is visiting, excited at the trip to Rome he is shouting her, but puzzled as to where he's getting the money. She asks Kelly to investigate.—A Red Fish
- Kelly finds herself drawn to attractive young lawyer David Murray, but is furious when he soundly defeats her "open and shut" case in court, allowing an accused arsonist to walk free. Kelly is determined to pin a second fire on her suspect but a lack of evidence, a second suspect, and a concerned mother eager to get rid of a troublesome neighbour cloud the investigation and keep her suspect out of reach while causing her to lose focus. Joss receives an unexpected visit from his mother, who is concerned about all the money he has been splashing around lately. She asks Kelly to find about the source of his money and upon questioning Joss, he admits to gambling, but ensures Kelly he has a sure-fire system, although that's not what she tells his mother.
