Did 'Bambi' Get Railroaded In 'Beer City?' It Looks Like It
ccthemovieman-130 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the more interesting episodes ever done by City Confidential. I'm sure the city of Milwaukee must have appreciated it. The writers here paint a glowing picture of this Midwestern city, for the most part. Heck, the Chamber of Commerce couldn't have done a better job. They also present a unique case involving a woman called "Bambi." "Bambi" is also very much favored by the writers and narrator here. As any regular viewer of this show knows, City Confidential is very biased and it doesn't take long to figure out what side they're on. In this case, they are backing the accused all the way. The problem is they don't give a balanced account. They don't let you, the viewer, get facts on both sides and make up your own mind.

Here, there are two "opinions" that are made to look as ironclad facts: 1 - The Milwaukee police force was not only corrupt, it was sexually immoral; 2 - Lawrencia Bemenek, a.k.a. "Bambi," was railroaded into jail by those corrupt cops.

Bemenek was a young female cop in the MPD and quickly saw it as a very sexist organization, led by a boss who exemplified that attitude. After three weeks on the force, she issues a formal complaint to Internal Affairs. Now....right or wrong....City Confidential, as with any Liberal mindset, immediately takes the woman's side in this sexism charge. (Anything that ends with "ism" is a Liberal cause celebre.) There is not one comment to the effect that Laurie might have been a little more discreet or waited a bit longer before getting the entire police force against her. Gosh, they can't understand why the police would be so sexist. Nonetheless, what happened to this woman down the road sure doesn't make the cops look like the kind of guys you want representing the law in your city.

Laurie's poor judgment in about everything she did is never mentioned by narrator Paul Winfield, but jumping from the police force to being a Playboy bunny, then quitting that after three weeks and marrying - after one month of dating - the biggest Casanova on the police department doesn't make her sound like the 100 percent pure and wonderful character CC makes her out to be. I mean, come on! One thing, though, seems very apparent. As dumb as "Bambi" was, the cops were downright despicable. When you watch this show and see the things you'll see and hear about the evidence, you'll agree this girl got the shaft.

Meanwhile, we get a fascinating look at America's "Beer City," and second-fiddle to Chicago here. Winfield's glowing adjectives describing this small metropolis makes it sound like Paradise. Just listen to one of the opening sentences in this episode:

"Milwaukee is a misunderstood city. It's much more than just a bunch of beer-swelling knuckleheads and world-weary 9-to-5ers. In truth, the city is a unique blend of Old World hospitality, Mid-America sentimentalism and urban America hipsterdom." We get the history of the famous beer companies and Harley-Davidson motorcycle business, a comment or two about how much the citizens love their cheese and how Milwaukee is forever trying to "escape the shadow of Chicago."

Biased comments aside, this was an interesting look at this city and the trials and tribulations of poor Miss Bemenek, who appears to have spent 10 years in jail on a trumped-up charge.
