In Iran a farmer tends to his fields as normal. However hands beckon him from the ground and entice him with a strange crawl shaped crop. He uses the crop on his arm and finds himself changed for the better. However the desire from his arm grows and he finds himself feeding it relentlessly as he falls victim to his own addiction.
This award winning short film from Iran (who we will probably be at war with soon, so I'd better get my praise in early for fear of being "un-American") looks at the growing problem of opium addiction within the rural communities of that country. On this level alone I was interested because it is rare we hear much about drug addiction in other countries it is easy to think of it as a Western problem rather than something affecting the third world. This film is not a major revelation in terms of the subject but this is because it isn't a documentary. Rather it is an impacting look at the problem that depicts it in very strong terms. The problem grows on the character's arm and becomes a mouth frantically demanding food faster than it can get it before the man becomes nothing more than a mouth and some flesh. It may sound obvious but it is well done and delivered pretty well. The animation is impressive and imaginative throughout and I found it really engaging and easy to understand the point it was making even without the cultural reference.
Overall an engaging little short film that is much better than it sounds when written on paper. The animation is good and the total delivery makes it an interesting short that is easy to understand while making important points about a serious subject (no matter where you are in the world).
