Indiefest '09 Recap

23 February 2009 3:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

As the San Francisco Independent Film Festival drew to a close yesterday, it bowed out with a final night time showing of Deadgirl, a controversial picture that challenges the audience's idea of sex and the coming-of-age. It's a nice bookmark to its opening night film, Somers Town, which is also about two teenage boys and a girl, but is at the opposite end of the spectrum. In between, we have films that are either full of life or apologetically cynical, completing a journey from the sweet to the depraved.

Here's a recap of the interesting independent films we had the chance to see.

Deadgirl

"It uses otherworldly elements to perform a horrific probe of the human experience, which is what the best horror films always do." (Read more)

DVD releases for Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Wow, this week we have a veritable cornucopia of genre film dropping. First off is the [Rec] remake Quarantine which I personally enjoyed more than the original. I mean, that camera bashing the head in scene? Awesome! Then we have the (hopefully not) last in the Feast trifecta, Feast 3: The Happy Finish which is hands down a great series, see it. Next we have the long awaited Midnight Meat Train (review here) adapted from Clive Barker's story of the same name, and while this may have had a sordid history in getting a release, it's still worth watching. Then we have the surprisingly good (but badly titled) Alien Raiders which we all enjoyed (review here). Then we have Screamers 2: The Hunting which I know agentorange is looking forward too. Last but not least is the f***ed up genre favorite Ex Drummer out of Belgium which you should really check out. »

[Movie Review] Ex Drummer

16 February 2009 10:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Originally reviewed as part of the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.

Brutal. This Belgium film has been compared to Trainspotting for its depiction of the unruly lives as of society’s dregs, but one look at it and you’ll see why it makes the Danny Boyle classic look like West Side Story. Ex Drummer is Trainspotting on a cocktail of cocaine and steroids. It’s savagely violent, explicitly offensive, politically incorrect and boasts humor as black as Satan’s morning coffee.

To say that the four protagonists are misfits would be a crime of neglect, since they are much more dangerous than that. Ex Drummer tells the forming of the ironically named punk band The Feminists, consisting of three handicapped social outcasts who recruit successful writer Dries to be their drummer. Dries agrees out of amusement and boredom, reasoning that his bandmates would provide interesting material for a story. »
