19 October 2009 1:34 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It looks like a week of just a few hits and mostly misses when it comes to DVD and Blu-ray releases, but as always, it's our job to keep you guys in the loop on what's coming, so head on in and see what you might want to add to your collection.

First on the list is The William Castle Film Collection, a must-have for all ages. And it includes the stellar Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story (review here) documentary, so it's definitely a win-win. Finally, the long-awaited 100 Feet hits the home market, and while I must admit I was a bit disappointed in the ending, it was a fun ride while it lasted, and Famke Janssen gives her all. Another fun ride (again, up until the predicable ending) is Blood: The Last Vampire; if you're planning on picking it up and have the tech, be sure to grab the Blu-ray. »

New TV on DVD releases this week

5 October 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Not only is The Lola Falana Show on DVD now, I didn't even know there was a Lola Falana Show. I knew that there was a Lola Falana (that's a fun name to say: Lola Falana Lola Falana Lola Falana). She was a dancer and actress who was pretty well known back in the 70s, but her TV show escaped my radar. This set includes guest stars Dick Van Dyke, Bill Cosby, Sonny and Cher, and Muhammad Ali.

There's also a Heeere's Johnny: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson "Holiday Set." It looks like the same set that I've owned for a couple of years (several DVDs split up into different categories: Timeless Moments, Standup Comedians, Carson Country, and the original Ultimate Collection disc), but with a special Christmas disc thrown in, with three classic episodes.

'Battlestar Galactica' Alumni Link Up in 'The Green Chain'

21 August 2009 11:23 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

If you are a fan of Syfy's Battlestar Galactica, you probably know that some scenes of the series were filmed in and around the extensive forests of western British Columbia. What you may not realise, however, is that two of the show's stars - Tricia Helfer (Number Six) and Tahmoh Penikett ('Helo') - have lent their talents to a new indie docu-drama that is intended to raise awareness of issues associated with cutting down some of these forests.

The film, called The Green Chain, was written, directed and co-produced by Vancouver-born Mark Leiren-Young. His previous credits include scripts for episodes of the series The Collector, Blood Ties and Psi Factor. He has also written a book, 'Never Shoot a Stampede Queen', articles for 'Time Magazine', 'Maclean's' and 'The Utne Reader', and stage plays.

True to his roots, Leiren-Young focuses The Green Chain on the debate in British Columbia, but it »

Interview with Christina Cox

29 July 2009 9:49 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Christina Cox has more than 40 roles to her credit but some love her best as Kim in Better than Chocolate, for her turn as the bisexual private detective Vicki in Blood Ties, and one half of the lesbian crime fighting couple in Nikki & Nora. Christina's newest sci-fi series, Defying Gravity doesn't have her playing a lesbian or bisexual, but she does get to wear form-fitting space suits and rattle off scientific jargon as a mission biologist. What's better than a hot nerd in space? Nothing, that's what.

Christina talked to AfterEllen.com recently about her new show, which is described by a production executive as a "sci-fi premise, told in a female-friendly way." She also gave us some dish on Ladycops, the show-within-a-show from the web series, 3Way, and shared her thoughts about this year's Hot 100 List.

Christina Cox and Liz Vassey star in "Ladycops" episode "Brotherly Love"

17 July 2009 3:13 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Nancylee Myatt, Maeve Quinlan, and the rest of 3Way folks recently released a full episode of the fake show-within-a-show Ladycops, starring Liz Vassey (CSI) and Christina Cox (Blood Ties, Defying Gravity), that they first introduced in episode six of 3Way.

Cox and Vassey play straight actresses (Lara Lancaster and Mikki Majors) who hate each other, playing lesbian detectives (Sienna and Jo) secretly in love with each other on the crime show Ladycops — which is itself a reference to the lesbian detectives Cox and Vassey played in the pilot for a real show called Nikki & Nora, which was almost picked up for broadcast TV in 2004.

Confused yet? But in a good way, right?

Basically, Ladycops: Brotherly Love is a send-up of police procedurals — complete with cheesy music, forensics banter laced with sexual tension, and the requisite chasing-a-suspect sequence — with a lesbian twist. It also makes fun of how some actors who »

First look at "Defying Gravity," a "'Grey's Anatomy' in space"

10 July 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I've been a fan of women in space movies ever since I watched Kate Capshaw and Lea Thompson in Space Camp as a kid. Although I've never gotten into the Star Trek or Star Wars franchises too much, because they rarely give women leadership roles — except for Star Trek: Voyager, which I've seen all seven seasons of — and I've only watched some of the Battlestar Galactica episodes, I enjoyed Jodie Foster's Contact (at least the first half), and Lori and I both loved the 2002 Showtime series Odyssey Five.

So I was excited to hear about the new space drama coming to America (and Canada, Germany, and the U.K.).

Last week, ABC purchased 13 episodes of the new Canadian sci-fi drama Defying Gravity, which has this description, "In the near future, eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering thirteen billion kilometers. »

Trailer for Blood Ties

24 June 2009 6:24 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

It’s been somewhat quiet on the Singapore front, but here’s something that should interest you Twitch folks!

Some years ago a group of friends and I dabbled with short film making, plunging ourselves headlong into an insane 48 hour competition. That same competition had yielded Nicholas Chee and Randy Ang’s short film which clinched top honours, and they had gone on to make the feature film Becoming Royston. Chai Yee-wei was one of the participants in that very same contest, and a few award winning shorts later, look where he is today as well, with a feature film under his belt too, waiting for a 3rd quarter release this year. As for my friends and I, well, erm, that’s another story for another day…

I’ve followed Yee-wei’s shorts film in recent years, having seen them either online at competition websites, or at local film festivals. »

"Blood Ties," The Canadian Vampire TV Series, Is Coming To DVD

26 March 2009 1:52 PM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

"Blood Ties," the popular Canadian TV series about vampires, will be out on DVD June 2. The first 22 episodes of the show are on four DVDs.

The show, which stars Christina Cox, Kyle Schmid, Dylan Neal and Gina Holden, is similar to HBO's "True Blood" and the book-turned-movie"Twilight." "Blood Ties" is based on the "Blood Books" by Tanya Huff.

"Blood Ties" stars Christina Cox as Vicki Nelson, a former Toronto cop who left the force to become a private investigator after she started to lose her eyesight. Through her work, she met and teamed up with 480-year-old vampire Henry Fitzroy.

There is a mutual attraction between Vicki and Henry, played by Kyle Schmid, but that is further complicated by Vicki's relationship with her former partner and lover, Mike Celluci, played by Dylan Neal. In the beginning, Celluci doesn't believe in vampires and personally thinks that Vicki is not only losing her eyesight, »
