It's been more than 10 years since the world was subjected to the last "Scary Movie" sequel, but as is the case with any famous horror movie villain, it's practically impossible to keep this series down forever. And now Paramount Pictures plans to breathe new life into this particular franchise. The studio will be teaming up with Miramax to resurrect the "Scary Movie" franchise with a brand new installment. Production begins this fall, and the film will be in theaters in 2025.
Variety reports that producer Neal H. Moritz, who is best known for producing the "Fast and Furious" movies for Universal, will be producing this new iteration. Moritz was not directly associated with any of the previous five "Scary Movie" films, but interestingly, he did produce a couple of horror flicks that were parodied in those early versions, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend." Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

Roald Dahl's novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was first published in 1963, and has been a perennial classroom favorite ever since. The story tells the tale of an impoverished, Dickensian moppet named Charlie who wins a sweepstakes held by the chocolate factory in his town. The chocolate factory, overseen by an eccentric recluse named Willy Wonka, produced sweets with eerie, magical powers; multi-flavored chewing gum caused its chewer to expand into a massive blueberry. That sort of thing. Of all the children who won Willy Wonka's sweepstakes, only Charlie survived the tour. Well, the other kids survived, but definitely the worse for wear.
Dahl's book was first adapted to a feature film in 1971, but that was only the first adaptation of many. The BBC adapted the book into a radio drama in 1983, and Zx Spectrum adapted it into a video game in 1985. There was a second video game...

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Tales From The Box Office: Meet The Spartans, One Of The Worst-Reviewed Movies Ever, Was Still A Hit
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Spoof movies have been a staple of comedy for decades. For as long as popular cinema exists, there is an argument to be made that somebody should be there to send up the popular genre of the moment. Perhaps the greatest of all time in this department were David and Jerry Zucker, aka the Zucker brothers, who were behind such comedy masterpieces as "Top Secret," "Ruthless People," and, most importantly, "Airplane!"
Unfortunately, the spoof movie took a pretty rough turn in the 2000s largely thanks to the success of "Scary Movie," a send up of the slasher craze that was reignited by "Scream" several years earlier. The film was a big hit and spawned several sequels and, before getting massive rewrites after being sold to Dimension Films,...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And with its list of new releases for December 2022, Hulu is planning accordingly.
Compared to its rival streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Hulu is a bit more holiday forward in the final month of 2022. Sure, all the streaming services are bringing some Christmas content to the table, but Hulu is the only one to plant its flag in a special called It’s a Wonderful Binge. This comedic take on a psychedelic Purge-like Christmas is set to premiere on Dec. 8.
Elsewhere on Hulu this month, subscribers can look forward to the release of FX’s Kindred (Dec. 13). Based on a thrilling novel of the same name, this series follows a woman being violently yanked back and forth in time. In what’s increasingly become a tradition, Canadian comedy Letterkenny will premiere a new season the day after Christmas.

The Yule log is likely roaring on the fireplace of your TV screen — the holidays are upon us. Hulu is going all-in on their Christmas content with a few holiday features, including the debut of their original movie “It’s a Wonderful Binge.” But if you’re looking for a new television series to keep you busy till Christmas it’s all about the adaptation of Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” the first television translation of any of Butler’s acclaimed literary works, coming to FX on Hulu this month.
Based on Butler’s 1979 novel, “Kindred” focuses on Dana James, a young Black aspiring writer living in Los Angeles with her husband Kevin Franklin. While in the process of moving, Dana abruptly finds herself tossed between the modern day and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. During her journeys to the past, she struggles to survive while trapped at...

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

Fred Willard, who parlayed a knack for naive characters into costarring roles on the television series Fernwood 2 Night and Everybody Loves Raymond and in several memorable films, has died. He was 86 and his death was confirmed by his agent, Michael Eisenstadt.
“Fred was one of the busiest comedic actors in a career which lasted over 50 years,” Eisenstadt said in a note. “He had recently completed his Emmy nominated recurring role on Modern Family and can be seen later this month in his recurring role as Steve Carrell’s dad in the Netflix series Space Force. Jimmy Kimmel had Fred recur on his show on an average of every two weeks doing comedic sketches until the stay-at-home order began. Fred truly enjoyed every role and gave each performance his own special spin. He was truly a comedic genius.”

Dinosaurs stomped back onto the internet a few weeks ago when a pre-Jurassic World 3 short film hit Ethernet cables across the globe. People seemed to enjoy it well enough, certainly more than Fallen Kingdom, but more on that later.
The short, titled “Battle at Big Rock,” brought up questions of a possible live-action Jurassic show. And actually, a fan brought that question up to someone surprising. During a live screening/Q&a of Jurassic World, director Colin Trevorrow was asked about if a dino-series was in the works, and the Director Who Never Smiles gave as glorious of a non-answer as one could expect:
“If the audience demands [other live-action stories], we will provide.”
So, there you have it: it’s possible, but nothing official yet.

Love Island has officially made its way across the Atlantic and onto Us viewers' screens, combining our favorite elements of Big Brother, Bachelor in Paradise, and the general concept of British invasion. The sultry Summer show (try saying that three times fast!) throws a group of single well-waxed individuals into a villa in Fiji, where they're then paired up, compete in challenges, and may be sent packing at any given moment. But, who's helping call the shots here? Host Arielle Vandenberg - a name you'll be hearing a whole lot more of this Summer.
So, who is Arielle Vandenberg? While some claim she's a dead-ringer for Love Island UK host Caroline Flack, there is, of course, much more to know about Vandenberg than the features she shares with her English counterpart. Here's a very quick rundown on the woman guiding our islanders through the many highs and lows of this Summer's Love Island on CBS.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

Horror fans have been looking forward to seeing Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake since the film was teased in trailers back in 2015, but bankruptcy issues at Relativity Media delayed and ultimately brought the movie's release to a halt. Since that time, Flanagan directed two well-received films for Netflix, and the streaming service has now revealed that they will bring Before I Wake out of film purgatory and into the warm glow of the TV screen.

After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best director of the 21st century, Metacritic has gone ahead and averaged out filmmakers’ Metascores to name the worst directors since 2000. As with the first list, filmmakers must have made at least four movies in the last 17 years to be eligible — meaning that Tom Six (“The Human Centipede”) and Dinesh D’Souza (“Hillary’s America”) don’t qualify despite the fact that they’re far from critical darlings.

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 25, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend saw the release of Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth entry in the long-running Transformers franchise. Interest in this film — at least on the domestic front, has seemed to be at an all-time low, with audiences growing frustrated with the lack of attention to storytelling in the film. This past weekend’s box office of $69 million for Wednesday-Sunday, and $45 million for the standard Friday-Sunday. This is a franchise low for the series, whose other lowest domestic opening was around $70 million for the very first film. However, with its worldwide haul sitting at around $265 million, it’s very clear that Paramount never planned on putting their stock in North American audiences. In short, it’ll likely make money due to the foreign box office, but...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 18, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend saw the release of a few movies in the form of the Pixar flick Cars 3, the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me, not to mention, the shark movie 47 Meters Down, and the comedy film Rough Night. The past weekend brought a bit of a mixed bag.

As expected Cars 3 did okay, taking in $53 million in its opening weekend. It was enough to firmly land it in first place, but it was nothing to get excited about. It had the least successful opening of any Cars film to date, and as it stands, it has one of the lower grossing openings of Pixar films as a whole. That being said, it isn’t a bad opening,...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 11, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
Wonder Woman performed amazingly in its second weekend, taking in $57.2 million domestically, only dropping 44.6 percent from its already-stellar first weekend. As Warner Bros. hoped, the film has managed to garner amazing word of mouth, resulting in its solid second weekend. As of this writing, the film has taken in $435 million worldwide. When all said and done, we wouldn’t be surprised if it neared $750 million worldwide by the end of its run, but we’ll have to wait and see.
The Mummy, on the other hand, did not do as well as hoped. Projections a week or so prior to the film’s release pegged it at around $35 million to $42 million, but as soon as the negative reviews started to pour in, that prediction was lowered to around $32 million.

By this time, you’re probably more than aware that Wonder Woman exceeded all sorts of expectations this past weekend when it, not only surprised critics and fans with its amazing quality, but with its ridiculous box office performance. Weeks ago, it was speculated that the film would only take in around $65 million domestically, but it went above and beyond, taking in $100.5 million, securing its place as the highest grossing opener for a film directed by a woman. Wonder Woman also received an A CinemaScore, meaning audiences that went to see it pretty much got exactly what they wanted out of the flick. This is usually a sign that a movie will have a long life in theaters, but we’ll have to see is that comes to fruition,...

How hysterical do you find the name Professor Poopypants? Not very? Then you are likely a grown adult (and probably female). If you don’t find gags about farts, poop, tinkle, wedgies, and giant toilets endlessly hilarious – if you are not, in body or spirit, a 9-year-old boy, then Dreamworks new animated film Captain Underpants – The First Epic Movie is not for you. And that is precisely the point.
Few things command disrespect like the sight of a grown man wearing his tighty-whities, however the bald and barefoot Captain Underpants happens to be a superhero. As one character in Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie notes: “Most superheroes look like they’re flying around in their underwear…. Well, this guy actually is flying around in his underwear!” The Captain is the comic-book invention of a pair of 9-year old troublemakers, George and Harold (voiced by Thomas Middleditch and Kevin Hart...

It’s hard to say the name “Captain Underpants” without smiling, and the big-screen debut of the skivvies-clad superhero (the film’s subtitle is “The First Epic Movie”) maintains that same goofy, innocently naughty nature for nearly its entire running time. Yes, there are farts, and musical numbers choreographed around infinite rolls of toilet paper, and an arch-nemesis named Professor Poopypants; at the preview screening I attended, kids were delighted, and so were more than a few adults who were willing to surrender to the animated feature’s grammar-school scatology and loopy, anything-for-a-laugh ethos. Adapted by Nicholas Stoller (“The Muppets”) from the popular books.

As the Epic Movie team announce they have Star Wars in their sights, might we have a chat about Mel Brooks' Spaceballs, amongst others?
Readers of this site may have read last week's news that there's to be a new Star Wars spoof. This film comes from the team who brought us Date Movie, Epic Movie, and apparently something called The Starving Games which blissfully passed me by. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Selzer make relatively cheap movies that, despite critical maulings, tend to make money at the box office. When I worked at a cinema, an eleven year old boy went to see Meet The Spartans three times, proclaiming it the best film he had ever seen.

Sword fighting has always been a staple in movies. All the way back to the early 30s we’ve seen epic sword fights in cinema. They carry an element of drama that other fights don’t have. Not only are you looking at incredible choreography but the mental aspect of it is also at play. In a sword fight there are no guns. Right there it’s put in a more “manly” category. You have the actual swords themselves which for people who love welding and sword making, it can bring a great element as well. Also, sword fighting is just more “personal”

Star Worlds Episode Xxxive=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue goes into production this year.
Whenever the Golden Raspberry Awards roll around, it’s a continual disappointment that they tend to focus on big movies, sometimes ambitious ones, that failed for one reason or another. Coldplay is known for their eccentric and artistic music videos that accompany their heartfelt singles. Tracking and analytics can give an indication of how audiences are responding before the movie even hits cinemas, but it's only in that opening weekend, once they've actually seen the movie, that you can get a more accurate read on public opinion.
Box office aside, one way in which Hollywood's studios reads public response after release is Cinemascore, the Las Vegas-based market research firm which conducts nationwide exit polls. Billed as “Hollywood's Benchmark”, the company's researchers gathers information from filmgoers and the results, expressed as letter grades,...
