The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series »

A Few More Peeks at Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

18 December 2009 4:01 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

With Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief set to hit theaters February 12, 2010, the promotional campaign for the movie has cranked into higher gear a bit with a new international trailer.

Not all that much new footage here, but we do get our first good look at the more horsey half of Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, the centaur who is Percy's teacher and mentor.

This scene is also included in a new TV spot for the film, but the latest poster instead spotlights some of the impressive water-wielding powers that Percy (Logan Lerman) has acquired by virtue of being the son of Poseidon.

Medusa Unveiled in New Percy Jackson Trailer

18 November 2009 6:26 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The international trailer for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is out, and it shows the storyline in a much more coherent way than earlier teasers — and displays at least one plot change from the book and an older Percy. (Logan Lerman is clearly not 12 in this clip.)

It also offers a pretty cool preview of some of the movie's creature designs. Highlights include glimpses of the watery powers that Percy inherited from his sea god father Poseidon (Kevin McKidd), a very cool sequence in which his teacher Mrs. Dodds (Maria Olsen) transforms into a bat-winged Fury, and a first look at Uma Thurman as Medusa. Sporting a head full of snakes and a come-hither attitude, she tries to entice our young hero out from behind his iPod to "sneak a peek," with all the horrible consequences that would entail.

New Posters, LIghtning Billboard for Percy Jackson Movie

30 October 2009 4:12 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The new poster for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief has the young hero Percy hip-deep in water and brandishing a lightning bolt. Not a good idea — unless you just happen to be a demi-god and the son of Poseidon. Then everybody else had better watch out.

This theme is carried over in what's being touted as the "world's first electronic lightning billboard." The movie's stars came out as they turned on the billboard's juice. Logan Lerman (Percy), Kevin McKidd (Poseidon), and Alexandra Daddario (Annabeth, daughter of Athena) were all on hand for autographs and interviews at the event.

Talking with Et, they were all clearly charged up about the movie, and Lerman offered his own summary of what the whole thing is about:

The movie takes place in the modern day. And Greek mythology is real. Basically, Zeus has lost his master lightning bolt, and the world is going »

And Jessica Alba. And Beyoncé. And Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. And, well, you get the idea. Tokio Hotel love talking about the ladies (except for bassist Georg Listing, who makes it a point of saying he has a girlfriend).

Flashes of Adventure in New Trailer for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

17 September 2009 10:06 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In the first teaser for Chris Columbus' adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief we got taken on an elevator ride to Olympus. The latest trailer offers a bit more of the story in brief flashes.

A school tour of a museum introduces us to the pantheon of Greek gods and the half-human consequences of their dalliances with mortals — consequences not limited to myth or ancient times, as young Percy (Logan Lerman) soon discovers.

Toronto 2009: Edward Norton Talks to Himself

16 September 2009 12:56 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

"I walk around talking to myself anyway," Edward Norton told the packed Ryerson Theater after Monday's premiere of "Leaves of Grass" at the Toronto Film Festival. "Maybe this was just the way to get paid for it." Although the "Fight Club" star's played a few characters with dual personalities, this new comedy from Tim Blake Nelson marks the first time Norton has played two distinct characters. The Kincaid twins have gone their separate ways in life -- Bill is a well-liked philosophy professor at Brown, while Brady is a deceptively smart hydroponic weed dealer. The brothers reunite when the straitlaced Bill returns home under the pretense Brad has died, only to discover that he's been unwittingly enlisted in one of his sibling's elaborate criminal schemes.

For Nelson, whose previous work behind the camera has dealt with heavy themes of small-town violence ("Eye of God") and the Holocaust ("The Grey Zone »

Erica Cerra Drawn to Percy Jackson Movie by Harry Potter

2 September 2009 4:52 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Chris Columbus, who's directing the movie adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, has tried to brush aside the obvious comparisons to the Harry Potter series. The parallels to this tale of a modern-day boy who discovers that he's the son of the Greek god Poseidon are fairly obvious, though. Not all of the cast are staying on message, either. Erica Cerra, who plays the goddess Hera, tells Sci-Fi Wire that it was precisely the similarity between the projects that made her so enthusiastic about her role in the picture.

I'm a big Harry Potter fan. I have all the books. I've seen all the movies a billion and one times. When I heard what Percy Jackson was about I read it and pushed, pushed, pushed to be in the movie. Other than the sheer experience of being in a Harry Potter-like movie, one of the things that most »

Colin reviews the Greg Mottola comedy.

Superbad director Greg Mottola follows up on that hit with another teen "coming of age" tale via 2009's Adventureland. Set in 1987, we meet James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), a recent college graduate who looks forward to a fun summer in Europe. This goes bye-bye when his dad (Jack Gilpin) gets demoted and his family comes up low on funds. To afford grad school in the fall, James needs to land a summer job.

Ludacris Plays an All-Seeing Brother in Latest Gamer Clip

18 August 2009 8:15 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Gamer's dystopian future is full of exploitation, where reluctant recruits are manipulated into combat and sex for the pleasure of an idle elite. But it's not all fun and games, even for the master gamers, who are apparently under rather thorough supervision themselves.

In a new clip from the movie, Simon (Logan Lerman), the top gamer, gets an unexpected visit from TV land. The giant flickering head of Humanez Brother (rapper and actor Ludacris) pops up to offer a few choice words of advice about what was presumed to be a private conversation. He comes off as some kind of weird cross between Max Headroom and George Orwell's Big Brother, but he's apparently here to help.

First Trailer for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief Opens the Doors to Olympus

15 July 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The first teaser trailer is out for the movie adaptation of the wildly popular novel Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It's the first in a series of books recounting the adventures of a modern-day boy who discovers that he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon, with all of the attendant powers and perils that auspicious lineage implies.

No real action or dialogue here, but we do get a first glimpse of Percy (Logan Lerman), a pretty cool elevator ride up to Olympus, and the tag line "Some heros are made ... and some are born ... of the gods." Although director Chris Columbus says that he is trying to avoid any of the obvious similarities to the Harry Potter series, the studio clearly recognizes that this is too big a draw to be ignored. The movie is being advertised front and center as "From the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone »

A new still from Gamer shows off the faint holographic controls that the wealthy gaming elite use to control their real-life puppets in this futuristic update of first-person-shooter video games.

the oh-no! DVD of the week: ‘Into the Blue 2: The Reef’

Because only in this bizarre world we live in are Jessica Alba and Paul Walker considered major stars too good for -- and too talented for! -- cheesy, low-budget, exploitation moviemaking. And so they get replaced with, you know, beautifuler, dumber people in the straight-to-dvd sequel. Not that you’d know that from this sales copy, which hopes you’ll be misled into thinking that Walker and Alba are back: Beautiful reefs and unsavory transgressions meet again in this sequel to the hit action-adventure thriller starring Jessica Alba, Paul Walker, and Josh Brolin. This time the danger is foisted upon unassuming professional scuba divers Dani (Laura Vandervoort) and Sebastian (Chris Carmack), a young, money-strapped couple who can’t turn down the hefty compensation offered by some suspicious clients who want to take a tour of the local Hawaiian reefs.
