When they're telling the story, audiences don't notice them
Too true. A tool, just as it should be. This is the second-longest featurette on the 2-Disc Award Edition DVD of A Beautiful Mind, with a running time of eleven minutes. After a brief introduction by Howard(with Grazer... uhm, sitting next to him), this consists entirely of clips of the film, CGI shots in various stages of completion and Scott Mack taking us through the few FX in the movie(note that this documentary contains spoilers for it). Without revealing much, this goes over the visualizing of how Nash's mind works, the dating metaphor, Marcee, the baby and the audience. The guy does a great job explaining, and he keeps it concise, if a little of it gets to be a bit techy(not all of those working in that field remember that not everyone else is an expert on it), so as to not spend excessive amounts of time on any one thing. The editing is tight. It keeps your interest, if you very badly want to know how they did it, but it suffers from the fact that none of the things here are groundbreaking, or, in fact, at all the focus or point of the picture itself. If you have a smidgen of idea of how stuff like this is done already, this won't tell you anything new about that. What it does say is how early on the discussions begin, and to the extent that it is an evolving process. I recommend this to those who want confirmation that they figured out how it was done, or those who haven't tried to do so. 6/10
