The Verge: Ashley Springer

9 November 2009 6:15 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

When Hollywood casting directors have to cast the school nerd, they'll usually pick an actor who was the jock in real life and slap a pair of glasses on him. Ashley Springer is much closer to the real deal: though initially shy and self-effacing, he's thoughtful, quick, and possessed of an interesting backstory once you get to know him (as a teen, he was a professional magician). Springer first gained notice as one of Jess Weixler's victims in the Sundance-minted horror comedy Teeth, but he has his largest role to date in the new film Dare, where his geeky Ben comes alive when both he and best friend Alexa (Emmy Rossum) pursue the sexually confused Johnny (Zach Gilford).

On the verge of Dare's release this week, I talked to Springer about the film's adventurous nature, the unique way he snagged the role, and his magical past. »

Peter and Vandy Movie Review

9 October 2009 2:25 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

When I first heard about this film, I was only presented with the idea that it is a “love story told out of order” or “it’s not a love story, it’s a story about love.” Calm down everyone, I know what you’re thinking. Let me get this out of the way immediately and say that (500) Days of Summer is a much better film than Peter and Vandy. With that said, Peter and Vandy is very good little movie within itself and, at the recommendation of this reviewer, it should be seen if you get the chance to.

Based on the 2002 play of the same name, Peter and Vandy is the brainchild of first time screenwriter/director Jay Dipietro. The film is exactly that; a love story told out of order, in beautiful New York City. It kicks off with Peter (Jason Ritter, W.) and Vandy (Jess Weixler, »

Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler on Peter and Vandy, Onscreen Romance, and Zooey Deschanel's Unwelcome Bombshell

8 October 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

There's a reason most film romances cut off after the guy finally gets the girl, and it's because after that comes all the tough stuff. Jay Dipietro's Peter and Vandy is principally concerned with studying those fraught parts of a relationship, and his time-shifting study of long-term lovers has two independent film darlings that are up to his challenge: Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler.

Ritter's finally overcome his status as "the son of John Ritter" to bloom into an indie leading man in his own right, while Weixler recently burst onto the scene with attention-getting performances in Teeth and Alexander the Last. Both actors have retained their easy chemistry long after shooting Peter and Vandy, which means their joint interview with Movieline was kind of a gigglefest. »

Exclusive: New Clip from Indie Romance ‘Peter and Vandy’

8 October 2009 7:31 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Those who stuck with me during the monsterous 13-day coverage blitz that was this year's Sundance Film Festival might remember this little love story. Peter and Vandy, from director Jay Dipietro, is a traditional love story told in a very non-traditional way. Like the Sundance darling 500 Days of Summer, it is told in a completely non-linear way. But unlike 500 Days, Peter and Vandy isn't a hipster fantasy -- it's a real love story set in New York City, with two great central performances from Jason Ritter (W.) and Jess Weixler (Teeth). Today I'm happy to present you with an exclusive clip from the film, in which Peter (Ritter) and Vandy (Weixler) have their first date over dinner. For some context, consider this: they've just met and even though she was dating a guy, he asked her out. And as he soon finds out, she wasn't very attached to that guy to begin with. It's »

Exclusive: New Photos from Indie Love Story ‘Peter and Vandy’

4 September 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Srand Releasing has provided Film School Rejects with a few exclusive stills from their upcoming release Peter and Vandy, a romantic drama starring Jess Weixler (Teeth) and Jason Ritter (Swimfan). While at Sundance earlier this year, I had a chance to enjoy and review this film, in which I praised it for its sweet and unique flavor -- and for the solid performances from its two young leads. You can read more in my review here. But if you're not into reading, there are photos below. The Jay Dipietro directed Peter and Vandy begins its limited release in New York and Los Angeles on October 9. Peter and Vandy is a love story told out of order. Set in Manhattan, Peter and Vandy go from strangers, to pie-eyed lovers, to a twisted and manipulative couple... just not in that order. Fox, Cody, Kusama, Reitman Talk Jennifer’s Body

10 August 2009 12:32 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The prospects for smart horror comedies are dicey. Audiences tend to get confused when their genres get too mixed up: are they supposed to laugh or be terrified? Look at the lackluster summer b.o. for Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell. Mixing sex and horror is also risky, as the feminist thriller comedy Teeth proved. The lucky break for the coming-of-age horror thriller Jennifer’s Body (due September 18 from Fox) is … »

Monster Movies- Ten of the Best

18 April 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

As much as the incomparable John Cusack in High Fidelity made it über cool to compose ‘top fives’ – or ‘top tens’ in this case – personally, I’ve always found it a colossal struggle, as though I’m somehow betraying otherwise very close friends; a mother forced to select favourites from her brood.

Given that my book, Monster Movies, contains 75 or so (all) marvellous monster flicks that have been granted inclusion within the 45,000 words/200-ish pages for one reason and one reason alone (they’re fine examples of the genre), I’d like to nominate each of these films as a top monster movie. But – and I capitalise ‘but’ to emphasise the shackles of my brief – if forced down on my knees with pistol pressed to temple, the following films listed below would compose a Top Ten Monster Movies of All Time, and I’ll endeavour to explain why.

Feature: Bring the SXSW Film Festival Home With IFC Direct on Demand

1 April 2009 11:57 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Most film fans don’t have the time, money, or connections to get to film festivals in their own city, much less ones that take place out of town. The festival circuit has created many an independent film hit but most of them don’t make their way to even Chicago much less the small towns of America. Now you can bring the film festival experience home with IFC Direct.

IFC Films’ On Demand channel has a particularly notable series this month called “IFC Festival Direct & SXSW”. The series of films available on IFC Direct On Demand creates the first-ever nationwide on-demand film festival experience, bringing the South by Southwest Film Festival home to people who would never get a chance to go there. A select group of five films that screened at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival will be simultaneously available in 30 million homes and virtually all major U. »

Woody Allen Still Searching For New Muse

28 March 2009 4:59 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

By now you've heard that Nicole Kidman will appear in Woody Allen's next untitled film (they're always untitled for a good while) due in 2010. It'll be his fourth film set in London and the cast currently includes Anthony Hopkins, Josh Brolin, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, and Antonio Banderas.

While the Kidman/Allen match might prove fascinating -- she loves real auteurs / he loves actresses with neurotic edge -- it also might be a big news item signifying nothing. Think of Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore starring in Everyone Says I Love You back in 1996. What's that, you say? You'd forgotten they were in that one. You're forgiven. See, they were major gets in the mid-90s but they proved to be far from the highlights of that film (Goldie Hawn easily won 'best in show' honors there). The media has a tendency to see every female casting decision made »
