Ben 10: Alien Swarm - DVD Review

18 December 2009 4:32 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

If you have youngsters in the house and cable television, chances are that you already have some familiarity with Ben 10 (Benjamin Tennyson) a remarkable young man who uses his special talents to protect our world from unscrupulous aliens. In this second live action film chronicling the adventures of Ben and his friends, the youngsters must save the planet from a nefarious Alien Swarm. I.m intrigued when animation turns to live action. It is something to see if the living breathing actors and the engineered special effects will live up to the animated characters and what they can do via the unlimited abilities of graphics. In some cases it can be a total flop, but not so with »

Exclusive: Alex Winter Talks ‘Bill & Ted’, Directing ‘Ben 10: Alien Swarm’

25 November 2009 11:30 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

As we all, know, there were plenty of 80’s and 90’s film heroes. From Indiana Jones to Marty McFly to Howard the Duck, there was definitely no shortage of strong protagonists for that decade. Which is why it was nice to get two reluctant heroes that really had no idea what was going on, in the forms of Theodore “Ted” Logan and William S. ‘Bill” Preston Esquire.

The two Bill & Ted films not only spoke to a generation, but were also pretty coherent time travel stories. Since 1991’s Bogus Journey, the dynamic duo made a split, Keanu going off to star in a few small films about a computer program, and Alex Winter switching roles to behind the camera, directing such projects as 1993’s Freaked and becoming the go-to director for the Ben 10 live action films.

We got the chance to chat with Winter about directing the Ben 10 films including the newest, »

Exclusive: Ryan Kelley Talks ‘Ben 10: Alien Swarm’

23 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

There seems to be a plethora of animated shows taking off these days, with Warner Bros., Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon filling up just about every kid’s TiVo across the country. We are definitely not in an era of Saturday morning cartoons anymore, but a Monday-Friday one. With that comes some pretty great live action adaptations of animated properties as well.

One of the more popular franchises in this realm is the Ben 10 series. Starting in 2005, the franchise has spawned two separate animated spin-offs, and now two live-action TV films, with the second being Ben 10: Alien Swarm, set to air on Cartoon Network on November 25th.

We got a chance to speak with Ryan Kelley, who plays Ben, the title character in the movie. He gave us an inside peek at his character, as well as his work with Sigourney Weaver on the Emmy-Nominated TV film, Prayers for Bobby. »

TV Review: ‘Batman: Brave and the Bold: Mayhem of the Music Meister!’

3 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Fans of Dr. Horrible rejoice! If you have been laying in bed at night, unable to sleep at the prospect of one day hoping to hear Neil Patrick Harris belt out some more power chords as a devious super villain, then look no further than last week’s episode of Batman Brave and the Bold.

For those who don’t watch the show regularly, Brave and the Bold is a different, younger take on the DC animated universe. The show’s creators have managed to take elements from the Silver Age of comics, such as a young Green Arrow, and the Modern Age, such as the new Blue Beetle. The animation also borrows and references styles from the Bruce Timm animation to the undertone of the Adam West Batman series.

In the episode, Mayhem of the Music Meister, Nph guest stars as the villain Music Meister, who has the power »

Alex Winter Directing The Gate 3D!

17 May 2009 11:17 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Several months back, we had heard reports that Alex Winter was attached to direct a 3D remake of cult favorite The Gate. Shock Till You Drop is now confirming this from the man himself who recently attended a screening of Freaked at the New Beverly Theater this past weekend. He told the audience there that he's currently in pre-production on the Gate update!

While most genre fans may recognize Winter in front of the camera in such films as The Lost Boys and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Winter made the segue way into directing starting with his debut Freaked and following it up with the highly underrated Fever (starring Henry Thomas). Most recently, he's been directing episodes of the Cartoon Network's Ben 10.

The original The Gate was directed by Tibor Takacs from a script by Michael Nankin and starred Stephen Dorff, Louis Tripp, Christa Denton and Carl Kraines. »

Confirmed: Winter Tackling The Gate Remake in 3-D

17 May 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Update: At a midnight screening of Freaked at the New Beverly in Los Angeles, Winter confirmed he is currently attached to The Gate 3D redo and is now in pre-production! There's a new director on board the remake of The Gate and it's a perfect fit. According to Production Weekly, Alex Winter ( Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure , and, Bogus Journey ) is tackling the redo of the hellish 1987 creature feature. Furthermore, he's doing it in 3-D. Winter's been juggling an acting, writing and directing career for years since his "Bill" days. In '93 he helmed the FX-heavy comedy Freaked (a fave of mine) and Fever in '99. Recently he's been directing episodes of Ben 10 for the Cartoon Network. Winter's sensibilities seem ideal for The Gate 's tale of »

Cartoon Network announces 2009-2010 plans

26 March 2009 6:49 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Cartoon Network is growing up... or trying to. And in the process, they're getting away from the things that make them, well, a cartoon network.

That's the theme that seems to be running through their upfront presentation for the 2009-2010 season. Highlights include entering into the reality TV genre, creating a new sports-centric programming block, and introducing 19 new programs, pilots, and movies, including six that are live-action (umm...) as well as 164 episodes of returning series.  In doing so, Cartoon Network stepped out on its evolutionary path to become what it described as a "dominant youth culture brand," that not only understands boys, including boys 6-11, but girls and older kids too, while creating "un-sanitized" "TV for kids, not kids TV".

Luckily, no one seems to talking about renaming it "CyFy". Yet.

Ben 10: Alien Force Review (Nintendo Wii)

2 March 2009 8:35 PM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Five years after Ben Tennyson took off his Omnitrix and tossed off the shackles of adolescence, Ben 10 returned to Cartoon Network in Ben 10: Alien Force. The series premiered April 18, 2009, featuring a teenage Ben Tennyson, who was once again joined by his cousin Gwen. This time Ben 10 must battle the invading force of the Highbreed, a group of aliens who are secretly plotting to take over the world. Unfortunately, Ben’s grandfather Max has mysteriously disappeared trying to fight the alien threat and has been supplanted on Team Tennyson by Ben 10’s cocky ex-rival Kevin. The story sounds like more exciting Ben 10 action, and was hastily adapted into a video game for every console known to man. Unfortunately, the Ben 10 action was left out of this title along with the fun and story. Instead of just using the existing story arc from Ben 10: Alien Force, »
