Introducing The 31 Fates Worse Than Death!

5 October 2009 6:48 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's October, which means that just about any genre outlet worth its salt has got their own "31 days" countdown gimmick working. So here's ours! Over at HorrorSquad, you'll find a new Fate Worse Than Death to argue about. We originally thought "31 Creative Kills" would be amusing enough, but then we decided to go a step further. Because horror fans know full well that there are ... much worse things than death.

But you want examples, don't you? Fair enough! On October 1, I lamented the fate of the head baddie in The Fly 2; the next day I felt bad for the undead best friend in An American Werewolf in London; on the third of the month Peter Hall dug into The Burrowers; yesterday Mr. Goss got Stuck on Stuart Gordon; and earlier today Mr. Hall revisited Eden Lake. What will the rest of October deliver? You'll simply have to tune in »

Get Stuck on UK R2 DVD and BluRay from Monday

8 May 2009 6:19 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Stuck was one of the best surprises of last year, a wonderfully macabre and worrying B-movie based on the true story of a Texan woman who ran over a homeless man and then drove home with him ‘stuck’ in her windshield (still alive). She garaged her car, and had sex with her boyfriend.  Though embellished for the screen, knowledge that much of the absurdity on display really happened makes it all the more appealing. Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, Fortress) manages to stay true to the B-movie material, with tight plotting and some truly cringe-inducing, gooey moments as Stephen Rea’s homeless man struggles to free himself. Increasingly tense with a sly dose of black comedy, what ultimately impresses is the sense of melancholy that strings the whole thing together whether in sympathy for the victim or puzzlement of how someone could wrong-do an innocent so horribly.

Baby Jane reborn in new feature

20 April 2009 9:23 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Busy actor Jeff Dylan Graham, whose long genre résumé includes October Moon, Beyond The Dunwich Horror and 100 Tears, dropped us a line to let us know about his new project Baby Jane? Written and directed by William Clift, it’s a take-off on the 1962 Gothic classic What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?—only with male actors (Matthew Martin and J. Conrad Frank) camping it up in drag in the roles originally portrayed by Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

“Being a huge fan of What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, I was more than enthusiastic about being involved in this film,” Graham tells Fango. “It was amazing to me that no one had yet attempted to make a feature-length parody of this true cult classic.

“I was amazed by the sheer brilliance of Matthew Martin, who literally channels Bette Davis, but is a strong actor in his own right,” adds Graham, »

Mena Suvari Having Her Wedding Gown Customized to Hide Tattoos

16 March 2009 11:16 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Mena Suvari, who has been very vocal to reporters when talking about her future wedding with fiance Simone Sestito, has just revealed that she is having her wedding gown customized in an attempt to hide the many tattoos she has. The 30-year-old actress' tattoos among others include a lion on her neck and upper back.

"I think it would be considerate to (Sestito's) family to have my tattoos covered, since there are two nuns on his mother's side of the family," says Mena when explaining that she plans to hide her tattoos on her wedding day because she wants to please her future mother-in-law. Though already planning on her wedding dress, Mena tells New York Daily News she and Simone haven't set a wedding date just yet.

After a few years’ absence, the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards are back in their original format, giving you the chance to vote for the best genre films, filmmakers and actors from the past year. There was such a bumper crop of good stuff released in 2008 that narrowing down the nominees to five in certain categories was truly tough; a couple of movies (most notably Splinter) will wait till next year when they’ve gotten more DVD exposure.

E-mail your votes (be sure to vote in all categories; personal e-mails only, no mass ballots) to postalzone@starloggroup.com. For the Fango Hall of Fame, be sure not to vote for Dario Argento, Rick Baker, Clive Barker, Mario Bava, Rob Bottin, Doug Bradley, Tim Burton, Bruce Campbell, James Cameron, John Carpenter, Jeffrey Combs, Don Coscarelli, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Peter Cushing, Joe Dante, Guillermo del Toro, Brad Dourif, Robert Englund, »

Hit And Run (DVD Review)

22 January 2009 10:07 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From first-time director Enda McCallion comes Hit And Run, a combination of last year’s Stuart Gordon film Stuck and 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. This attempt at an art-house thriller mixed with psychological horror tries to be too many things at once, and ends up coming across as only average.

The film’s first half seems more like a social commentary, based on the real-life event that has already inspired not only Stuck but a Law And Order episode. Mary, played by Amusement’s Laura Breckinridge, is on her way home after getting drunk at a party when she runs over something. Arriving home, she soon learns that she has in hit a man, Emser (The Last Winter’s Kevin Corrigan), who is still impaled on the grill of her car but very much alive. After an extremely short bout of compassion followed by a longer »
